We stopped by the beach so our dog could have a run. She the loves the beach and this was dog friendly when we visited. The tide was out so the beach area was huge and flat. Had a lovely walk and our dog had a great time running around

Fantastic place, nice clean beach, flat and dog friendly at this time of year. Its dog friendly at the top end all year i believe.
Even during the November 2023 storm, it was great and safe to be there as the tide was out.

This is my local beach & I try to swim regularly. However, sewage is being pumped into the sea regularly, 4 times during the last week, half term.
As soon as there is even light rain, sewage is let out. I left it nearly 48 hours after a release before I went in, which South West water claim is long enough, but I was ill the next day with D&V
Avoid this beach, unless there has been no rain for at least a week.

Our family short breaks always include a visit to the beach (even in October, as the summer was taken up with family visiting from abroad). Having researched the three or so beaches local to Bideford, I chose Westward Ho!, as I'd been to the area a long time ago, but had never been to this one. We chose the part of the beach that was also a country park on the basis that it was away from the town and parking would be easier. We were pleased to discover that our choice was clean, included a Visitor Center with exhibits of finds from the beach area including whale bones and artifacts from an ancient midden. Public toilets and a cafeteria.There was a natural break that formed essentially a salt-water lake separate from the sea, which was perfect for the children to paddle in and do their sand castles. I could see that in warmer weather, it would have been easy to spend the day there. In October, with rain looming, 2-3 hours was nice.

On a blustery day and the tide was in there is still a great walk. We wereucky as tide started to go out and the dogs loved running along the beach. Lovely seeing the kids learn to surf and two wild water swimmers in what looked like choppy water.

What a lovely place to go with your dogs. There is a great walk to a cafe and back Lovely places to eat and drink. Little gift shops & fantastic views.

The Beach Apartment, Nautilus, Westward Ho is beautifully equipped with everything that you need to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable and is spotlessly clean. Claire, the owner has made everything right through from the initial Booking process to the departure details so simple and straight forward. The location of the Apartment is absolutely perfect, directly opposite the beach, parking on site is so convenient and the shops and eateries are just a few steps away. There are many lovely walks to explore, or if you prefer, just sit on the terrace at the Apartment and watch the world go by. We look forward to returning very soon.

Beautiful sandy beach with tons of eating choices and nice souvenir shops. There is an abundance of seating so you can sit with a sandwich and look out to sea. There are surf shops and Ice-cream shops, Stone-baked pizzas, fish n chips, Cafè's, restaurants and drinking establishments a plenty.
We stayed at Tarka caravan park which is a short drive from Westward Ho! 👌

Big front allowing people to sit on the beach without being packed in like sardines. Not much on the front so bring your beach stuff

I know part of the beach is dog friendly but what about the pubs, restaurants and shops? Are any of these dog friendly?

Sorry for the delay.
Yes there are cafes and restaurants open over xmas, however not as many as during the summer season. Gift shops etc tend to be closed.
The local pubs are open... Pier House, Waterfront, Village Inn. there is a local Tesco Extra, Co-Op, and some independent food shops. Local Market in Bideford and large market in Barnstaple.
Queens Theatre in Barnstaple have a Panto on
Cinemas in Barnstaple too
Shops in Bideford as well as restaurants and Atlantic Village Shopping Outlet
Dogs are well catered for in the area...….

The beach of course but most of the holiday type of shops are closed. There are a few shops up from the beach which stay open the year round. Don't be downhearted cos Bideford is not far away and that quite a large town. Easily accessible by car or bus

Beach fishing from the rocks at Westward Ho! (don't get snagged) or spinning for bass in the surf where W Ho beach joins the estuary (don't get cut off by the tide that can come in behind you!) Various places in the Taw/Torridge estuary & Rivers. Fishing tackle shop in Westward Ho will give advice. Boat fishing - Torridge Marine (see web site). Best bait - crab or worms. Sea fishing charters available - possibly Clovelly or Ilfracombe best place.
Can you walk dogs on there lead on any beach or only dog beaches in westward Ho?

The westward Ho end is best, if you walk past the sea swimming pool there are some great rock pools and yes lots of sea life!
