Beautiful the apse mosaic of Christ Pantocrator, is light, the symbol of its colors are: red (pure spirit) blue (humanity) and yellow (light), in the register under the Virgin Mother dressed in blue with a red mantle, because she is a woman who will become Divine from human while He from Spiritual God becomes man. In the cruise above there are represented the many-eyed angels , archangels, cherubs, seraphim watching over earthly humanity. The mosaic is fabulous is formed by small pieces of gold beaten between two pieces of leather finely spread and welded on a piece of glass so they form a tile that carefully cut goes to form a piece of mosaic. In the registers below are represented the Prophets holding a closed scroll (because the only open book is that of the Christ Pantocrator (Panto = everything, Crator = creator) omnipotent. Our guide Nella told us all the symbols, references, messages contained in the cathedral, pointed out the Cleristory hidden at the top, the apses, Arabic writings, and many food for thought that made the cultural visit intoxicating and exciting.

The very symbol of the city

The most important monument of the city, with its enormous bulk rises above the houses of the old town like an island from the sea and characterizes the skyline (together with the rear height of the Rocca). Majestic building, dominates from above the Piazza del Duomo, which suddenly opens along Corso Ruggero: a long staircase rises to its large churchyard, where the facade stands flanked by the two bell towers, which look identical but are not in fact, especially the final part. Of substantially Romanesque style, there are those elements that make it include among the Arab-Norman monuments so frequent in Palermo and its surroundings. The cathedral was in fact begun under Roger II, in 1131, but was completed only with the Swabians (inauguration in 1267); further modifications took place in the '400, such as the portico of the facade with three arches (of which the sides are ogival and the central rounded). Internally, decorations were made in the Renaissance and especially Baroque period, but they were almost all removed with the restorations of the twentieth century. Entering you can see the classic Latin cross room, divided into three naves by bare columns that, because of what has been said about the decoration, appears in fact bare, were it not for the statues, the various funeral monuments, some certainly of value, and other stone elements present in the side aisles. But perhaps this "nudity" makes the narrow and deep presbytery stand out even more where, among the rich Baroque decoration of the seventeenth century (the only part of the church where it has remained), the valuable mosaics of the twelfth century that characterize the apse emerge as having their own light, and among which the great image of Christ Pantocrator of the apse basin seems to look right at us. Certainly in my opinion here you do not reach the richness and vastness of the mosaics that characterize those jewels of Arab-Byzantine-Norman art that are the Cathedral of Monreale and the Palatine Chapel of the Palazzo dei Normanni, but still represent something truly remarkable for beauty and quality. If mosaics are the main reason for the visit, there are still other interesting things to see, such as the chapel on the left of the presbytery, which preserves the rich neoclassical decoration (again, as with the baroque of the presbytery, it is the only one left inside the church) and in which you can admire a large silver altar from the eighteenth century; and then a Madonna of the Gaginian school, a baptismal font from the twelfth century, the large carved and painted cross of the presbytery of Guglielmo da Pesaro (15th century). Free entrance to the church, while you have to pay a ticket (differentiated according to the chosen itinerary) to see also the cloister, the sacristy, the bishop's chapel, the museum area, the climb to the towers and walkways, as well as the Osteio Magno (building that is outside the Duomo complex). When we were there, on a weekday morning in mid-December, we didn't have the dilemma of evaluating whether or not it was appropriate to see these things, because everything was closed (even the shed with the ticket office on the right of the Duomo), and there was no sign or someone to ask for info; we tried even in the afternoon but without news, so we were content to have seen at least the church. I also point out that even the external apses are not easily visible: the best way is to climb the Rocca and reach the appropriate viewpoint, above the apses.

Very nice cathedral and views from the towers

Duomo di Cefalú is the cathedral of this town, which is located on the North coast of Sicily Island, in the South of Italy. It was built between 10 and 15th Centuries, and it was consecrated in the 13th Century. It was built in Romanesque byzantine style and it has two main towers. Nowadays it is located in the main square and really the views from the square are very nice. Inside the cathedral, you can go up to the towers and see the very nice views of the surroundings. Really the best part of our visit.

The Duomo in Cefalu really is, in my opinion, the centrepiece of the town. It towers over every other building, has a regal feel to it inside and there are fantastic views from the turrets.

You have to pay to go up the church tower, but it wasn’t too expensive and is well worth it for the sea views in my opinion.

The Duomo is also located next to a lovely square with lots of al fresco dining options and bars serving locally brewed draught beer.

A must visit if in Cefalu.

Very beautiful cathedral and well worth visiting

What a beautiful building, made all the more impressive by its position in front of the rock of Cefalu. It dates from the 12th century and contains some very inspiring and interesting art work. Definitely one of the main sites of Cefalu to visit. It is also well worth exploring the narrow streets around the Cathedral, away from the main path followed by tourists.

Norman cathedral

The Cathedral of Cefalu is one of the cathedrals included in the Arab-Norman UNESCO site but its architecture is Norman Romanesque in northern Europe, with the two towers in the facade as a fortified church. Interior decorated with mosaics by Byzantine artists (there is also a stretch of older mosaic that suggests a pre-existing structure). Also beautiful is the exterior decoration with the porch added in the fifteenth century.

We had little time, but at the advice of a Guide we took tickets for the most complete of tours, ie the apse with the tower and roofs. The set is beautiful and well presented. Being the entrance to the church free, there is quite a lot of fuss.I upload photos of the brochure, with the points of interest
