One of the rare Norman cloisters still present in Sicily (there are apparently no more than three); it is the only remaining element of the Benedictine complex that had been built in the Norman period; indeed I should say partially remained, since of the 4 galleries only three survive, as the northern one was lost in the eighteenth century, with the enlargement works of the adjacent church of San Bartolomeo, which on this occasion was transformed from one to three naves. It is evident the use of reuse material, such as the fluted columns, of Roman origin, but it is above all the capitals to be observed, because some report original bas-reliefs made in the period of construction of the cloister in imitation of the Benedictine Cluniac school. It is a small reality, with a central garden if you want also neglected, but of objective suggestion. To enter the cloister you have to pay a modest fee of just 1 euro.

Stone structures dating back to the time of the Norman Kingdom of Sicily, built by the Benedictines. Today the cloister conveys a mystical, hieratic atmosphere, thanks to the primitive but harmonious geometries, carved stones and silence. Admire the fantasy of the bas-reliefs in the capitals, each one different from the other (in the Lombard style). The place is not very big and can be visited in a few minutes. It surprised us because we didn't think there were Norman vestiges of such interest in Lipari.

Davvero imperdibile la visita a questo chiostro, che fa parte del primo Monastero benedettino costruito in Sicilia.
Esso fu realizzato, nel XII secolo dal grande sovrano normannno Ruggero II, insieme alla chiesa benedettina. Nel Cinquecento subì ingenti danni durante l'invasione dei Turchi. Ai tempi di Carlo V, il chiostro, che aveva già perso la sua funzione originaria, fu utilizzato prima come cimitero e, poi, dopo un crollo seguito ad un terremoto, fu nascosto da una specie di muraglia. Solo nel 1978, fu restaurato e riportato alla sua grande bellezza che ora si può ancora ammirare. Ho trovato pregevoli gli animali mitologici raffigurati nei capitelli e i resti dell'originaria pavimentazione.

Dentro la Cattedrale non penseresti mai di imbatterti in un a simile meraviglia ma io sono di parte perché adoro tutto ciò che fa parte della Sicilia; chiostro normanno perfettamente conservato quadrato.

Questo chiostro ha una lunga storia, noi lo vediamo dopo l'opera di perfezionamento estetico del 1978 (Luigi Pastore notò i capitelli in ambienti vicino la cattedrale e informò le autorità). Il luogo appariva come un quadrato con le gallerie ai lati, il rifacimento ha usufruito di colonnati provenienti da case romane, vi sono dei punti dove gli scavi hanno fatto rinvenire un sottostrato pavimentale mosaicato, interessante seguire tutti i passaggi storici con la guida.

Spettacolare chiostro ricostruito da Ruggero D’Altavilla nel 1083 ma dopo l’assalto dei turchi del 1544 rimase danneggiato e abbandonato fino al1978 è rimesso in sicurezza. È a ridosso del duomo di San Bartolomeo anzi è inglobato nello stesso tanto che ci sarebbe da demolire parte della chiesa per riscoprirlo per intero ma naturalmente è impensabile, bellissime le colonne e capitelli con decorazioni mitologiche.

The Norman Cloister is inside the Cattedrale di San Bartolomeo. You pay an extra 1 € to visit it. It only takes a few minutes.
The Normans drove the Arabs from the Eolian Islands in the late 1000’s and the only residents were Greeks. In 1083, Count Roger I asked the Benedictine monks to move to Lipari and build a monastery near the castle.
The Benedictine Church was incorporated into what is now the Cattedrale and the Cloisters remain.

Siamo rimasti sorpresi da tutto il complesso che racchiude la Chiesa con un chiostro bellissimo, il Museo archeologico, il Castello. Dedicate una mezza giornata alla visita, ne vale la pena!
