In fact it is not a castle (it never was) but the lava domo overlooking the sea on which the primitive inhabited nucleus of Lipari settled since prehistoric times and which later, with the arrival of the Greeks first and then the Romans, became the acropolis of the city that in the meantime had expanded in the lower part. With the fall of the Roman Empire and the consequent new defensive needs, the population returned to inhabit the acropolis, more defensible which then became a fortress or fortified citadel with the arrival of the Normans; in the sixteenth century, after yet another destruction by the Saracens, the Spanish decided to further fortify the citadel with a new circle of walls (the one that still exists), incorporating part of the previous Norman fortifications. Today the “castle” climbs above all to visit the archaeological museum, which basically uses all the civil buildings inside the walls, and the cathedral of San Bartolomeo with its Norman cloister. But in the citadel you will also find an archaeological area with the excavations of the ancient acropolis, a Greek theater (although actually built in 1978 on the model of Greek theaters), several churches (one used for exhibitions by the same museum, one used by the municipality for exhibitions or as an auditorium, and another couple found closed), green areas and of course beautiful views of the lower city and the sea. Certainly here you will not find the entertainment and the clubs / shops of the center or the piers, but it is a part of Lipari monumental whose visit should definitely be made. You can go up to the area of the citadel or from Piazza Mazzini, using the Norman gate or with the long staircase that, going up from Via Garibaldi, in the center, lands directly in front of the facade of the cathedral.

Not to be missed to better appreciate your stay in Lipari, the stratification of the fortress tells the splendor and misery of these islands, from the first settlements of the Bronze Age to the church of San Bartolo, the whole history of Lipari leaves its testimony here.

This is one of only a few tourist things to do in the town. Climb up to the top of the hill, see the church and then walk along the walls of the castle, which was built by the Spaniards. The views of the sea are terrific.

Fascinating place with so much history. Some of that history is very sad with the pirate Barbarossa the pirate capturing the inhabitants and taking them as slaves in 1590.
Amazing views over the town where you can see how it developed over tune and I could see where my fathers house was growing up. There’s a fascinating museum also. It’s all well done except there could be more information as to what you are looking at and there should be something summarising the history as you enter to get a better perspective. Overall well worth visiting and a must for anyone in Lipari

Old church with beautiful exterior and stunning interior! This is a must visit if you are on Lipari! It’s free to enter, and it’s breathtaking to walk around the church. There is an option to pay 1€ to enter the older Norman era part of the church- it’s amazing to see the old structure and learn a bit about the history- would highly recommend

You cannot go to Lipari without first visiting this Castle which is actually a real Greco-Roman archaeological site, with some very beautiful churches inside, a cloister to visit by paying an extra contribution of 1 euro, and a interesting exhibition of contemporary art in the area of the former prisons.
We were also lucky enough to listen to a beautiful evening concert of saxophone and piano, organized by the municipal administration inside one of the churches on the site.
Children under 18 enter for free.
Highly recommended.

Posto molto bello ma lasciato al caso.
Sono salito per ammirare la vista che domina il porto.
Il sito è molto bello peccato per l’incuria da parte dell’amministrazione comunale.
Ho visitato questo posto a maggio. Ed ho trovato buche erbacce e sentieri per niente curati. Forse con l’arrivo dei turisti il sito verra reso più accogliente. La cattedrale del 500 con il soffitto affrescato è meravigliosa.
Il sito necessità di pulizia e attenzione continua. Spero che il comune prenda provvedimenti e impieghi del personale per la cura di questo posto in maniera continua.

Quando si sbarca a Lipari si resta
affascinati dalla maestosità delle possenti mura del Cinquecento che cingono il Castello. Esso domina, fino all'altezza di 50 metri, un promontorio naturale tra i due porti di Marina Lunga e Marina Corta. La sommità è pianeggiante e costitutisce il centro vitale dell'isola. Il Castello, abitato fin dal Neolitico, conserva tracce interessanti delle costruzioni architettoniche delle popolazioni che lo occuparono nel corso dei secoli.
Grazie alla cenere vulcanica trasportata dal vento, gli scavi archeologici hanno consentito di riportare alla luce in ottimo stato di conservazione diversi siti.
Una visita lunga, ma doverosa ed indimenticabile.

Our first glimpse of this fortification was from the Seaborn Quest ship upon which we sailed into Lipari. And, my-oh-my, what a view! The bell tower made the castle's presence known.
A later excursion up into the castle itself was bitter-sweet. There upon the walls was a commemorative tribute to those brave souls who were lost in WW II. The hands (and ugliness) of that horrible war left its mark all over Europe. Good for us all to remember those who sacrificed their all.
Our trek up to the castle took us eventually to the ticket-office and our guide arranged for our entry.
This was really our entry to see the fantastic museum, the "parc" (archeological grounds), the cathedral, and the amphitheater. The lion's share of our time was spent in the incredible museum (no air conditioning and hotter than Hades inside) but (this is an important aside here) pay attention to where the guards stand as they have air conditioning! Move close to them when you are about to expire.
And Lipari has the Spanish to thank for this fortification. In the 1500's (after Barbarossa's attack), the construction of this fortress would protect the inhabitants (less unfortunately of those who were nearly entirely all carried off into slavery by Barbarossa).
So today, for us day-trippers, we meander up the path to visit the museum and peruse the grounds. Do go to the cathedral and look at the doors as there is a story there.
