The story of Monte Nuovo is amazing, almost unique. This is the sudden formation of a new eruptive vent not only formed in historical times (1538), but affecting a flat area previously cultivated and settled without any suspicion by the inhabitants, then quickly forming a 130-metre high cone. To my knowledge, only the formation of the Paricutin volcano (1943) in the Mexican state of Michoacan can be compared to it.
Today the area including the volcanic cone is organized into a naturalistic oasis, and I traveled it in the autumn of 2022 along the most effective itinerary to grasp its beauty and mystery: the tour of the crater rim.
I easily arrived from Naples by the "Ferrovia Cumana", getting off at the "Arco Felice" station, then covering about 1 km of quite pleasant urban streets - then provided by sidewalk - up to the entrance to the oasis.
From here a well-traced path climbs quickly to the edge of the crater, from which you can then take the circuit.
I recommend doing the circuit in a clockwise direction, because by this way the path is much better recognizable. However, the path is easy and doesn't present any dangerous sections. Taking place constantly in the luxuriant Mediterranean scrub, it allows exciting visions (which change almost at every step) on the coast below, Capo Miseno, Pozzuoli, Ischia, Procida, and further on the mountains of the Sorrento peninsula. At times, the gaze can penetrate inside the crater, right down to the bottom, which is now harmless.
The oasis is well kept. Of course it's not a Japanese garden, but I found the place quite clean. And yet it's a marvel of nature!

In cima al cratere in 5 minuti, giro completo pari ad una circonferenza di 2 kilometri lungo sentiero a tratti panoramico, chiuso nell'ultimo tratto.

Il "Montenuovo" si trova a Pozzuoli in località Arco Felice dirigendosi verso Lucrino. Si tratta di un piccolo monte di origine vulcanica formatosi in una sola notte nell'anno 1538 e questo ne fa il monte più giovane d'Europa....
Attualmente è un oasi naturalistica e con un percorso poco impegnativo si può girare attorno al cratere immergendosi nella natura e in panorami molto belli.
La manutenzione dell'area lascia a desiderare e questo è un vero peccato. Il sito andrebbe meglio conservato e sopratutto pubblicizzato. Siamo ancora una volta in presenza del male italico, la penisola con il maggior numero di tesori molti dei quali non gestiti come meriterebbero....
Attualmente è un oasi naturalistica e con un percorso poco impegnativo si può girare attorno al cratere immergendosi nella natura e in panorami molto belli.

È di certo una della attrazioni più belle della zona flegrea.
Si tratta di un cratere vulcanico dormiente.
E' una stupenda oasi naturalistica immersa nel verde .
Si può anche pensare di passarci un'intera giornata e farvi un picnic.
Da l'impressione di essere mal gestita però ma merita comunque una visita perché ha un fascino meraviglioso!

Vi è bellissima vista sul mare, è possibile una piacevole passeggiata e durante le giornate FAO , potete godere di spiegazione da parte di volontari o gruppi di Scout, Una piccola area Pic Nic per poter mangiare un panino o un po' di frutta o giocare con giochi di società o carte. Ingresso gratuito. Passeggiando si arriva al Monte Nuovo, dove possibile ammirare un cratere da vicino con una folta vegetazione, tra storie e leggende che si potranno leggere sui pannelli laterali, pare che questo monte si sia eretto con una antica eruzione durata alcuni giorni. La legenda che non leggerete e che pare che alcuni sfollati si siano trasferiti dalle parti di Torre del Greco ed è per questo motivo che i dialetti sono a volte simili. Ma dico io, scappate da un vulcano nascente per sistemarvi sotto un antico vulcano che è il Vesuvio .

L'oasi naturalistica di Montenuovo è una delle potenzialità turistiche del territorio flegreo mal sfruttate. Si tratta di un cratere vulcanico spento e tramite un sentiero si può salire e girarci intorno. L'area è ricca di vegetazione ma presenta ancora le ferite di un recente incendio che ha distrutto una parte consistente di alberi e vegetazione. Inoltre dall'alto si può ammirare un panorama veramente bello. Quello che purtroppo è evidente è un generale stato di abbandono. Le recinzioni in alcuni punti sono adddirittuta collassate e sono adagiate a terra. Il sentiero in alcuni punti è una vera e propria selva. In passato c'era un sentiero che consentiva di scendere nel cratere; se adesso esiste ancora non è visibile. Inoltre in diversi punti ci sono escrementi di cavallo che quasi impediscono il passaggio. A mio parere non è ammissibile che uno stretto sentiero possa essere contemporaneamente utilizzato da persone e cavalli. La cartellonistica che almeno indichi la direzione in salita e le indicazioni per l'uscita è praticamente assente. Un vero peccato che un sito naturalistico così bello e importante si trovi in questo stato

in passato c'era un'associazione che si occupava di visite guidate e trekking, ma da un bel pò nn si organizzano piuù. Auguriamoci che riprendano , ma nel frattempo una gita, passeggiata o picnic conviene sempre farli
