Did this 3 weeks ago with husband. He’s as sure footed as a mountain goat. I’ve got bad knees. I borderline hated it because it was raining, crowded, School Holidays time for France & Germany. Most strenuous thing I’ve ever done and we’ve walked around The Cinque Terra Villages twice, tho 20 and 16 years ago. Younger, but they were a doddle compared to this.
We made it up to the Abbey on our first day. At start of stairwells (never-ending) to Abbey I wanted to sit it out and wait however long it took for my husband to do it. Chaos reigned with the crowds, School Groups. So many people. The rain. A lack of handrails on most stairwells. Made of granite worn down by centuries of feet on them, and long steep gradients. Not fun. Descending as dangerous as ascending. I attribute not falling or injuring myself to Divine intervention and many lighted prayer votives at every church I had been into in France.
It is all amazing and unique but older and less athletic people need an awareness of what they are up for in my opinion. We visited across 2 days and I did enjoy the village, beautiful Cemetery & St Pierre’s Eglise and the ramparts and gardens. The shops are a nice respite. I bought very little on MSM but the Shopkeepers were all pleasant.
We had a deservedly famous Galette (ham and cheese) at the rustic eatery at entry to village. It’s very popular because it seems to sell everything, fast and well priced. We even had a table and seats inside.
We stayed at The Mercure, off the island and were so glad we did. It was wonderful, comfortable and across the road from the Navette for MSM. So easy to come and go to MSM and from what we saw and heard staying on the island involved a lot of effort with luggage, accessing the building of the respective hotel the rooms were actually in. More stairs!
We did it, I survived.

Para entrar na Abadia é necessário fazer a subida destas escadas que nos levam à cereja no topo do bolo.

My goal was to reach the top and I did. It was worth the view. The local tour guide gave in-depth history of the construction completed throughout the years. It was an awesome abbey.

È la scalinata che dal termine della Grand Rue conduce fino alla terrazza dell’Ovest, punto panoramico molto bello e prima tappa di visita dell’abbazia. I gradini sono tanti ma non particolarmente alti e quindi si sale senza troppa fatica, unico problema potrebbe essere l’affollamento di persone che in alcune ore del giorno è davvero massiccio.

This is the central staircase which leads you up to the Abbey. It consists of several flights of steps.
Depending on from where you count, there're from around 350 to 900 steps until you reach the top and the western terrace where's the main entrance.
In any case, it is worth your effort.

Grandes escadarias em pedra, por vezes algo irregulares, que dão acesso ao topo do MSM e à Abadia. As escadas não são uniformes, havendo zonas estreitas e outras muito largas. Exige algum esforço fisico respiratório especialmente se estiver calor. Tem diversos patamares onde se pode parar para descansar. Com cuidado e persistência atinge-se o topo e logo se esquece o cansaço. Atinge-se o Terraço do Ouest e a panoramica é fantastica. Valeu a pena.

Le Grand Degré commence après l'Eglise Paroissiale du Mont Saint-Michel.
C'est une longue série de marches (100), puis les deux tours cylindriques du châtelet, un sombre escalier (surnommé le Gouffre) donnant accès à la Porterie, puis l'Aumônerie où l'on obtient le billet d'entrée, les 100 marches du Grand Degré intérieur, la Cour du Châtelet et enfin la Terrasse de l'Ouest qui donne accès à l'Eglise Abbatiale et à un panorama exceptionnel sur la baie.
Cette lente montée m'a permis d'accéder à ces lieux empreints de spiritualité.
Visite inoubliable.

On arrive au portail de l'Abbaye et on croit qu'on y est ! Que nenni ! Après le passage par la billeterie, on tombe sur ce "Grand Degré", un extraordinaire escalier entre muraille à gauche et sous-bassement de l'Abbaye à droite.
Ca grimpe fort, c'est sûr, mais quelle récompense lorsqu'on débouche sur la Terrasse de l'Ouest, au pied de l'Archange. Un bonheur !

Bom, se você chegou na grande escadaria, você certamente já subiu alguns degraus antes. É preciso fôlego, mas é recompensador. Vale a pena o exercício físico! E você fica imaginando quantas pessoas já subiram esses mesmos degraus antes de você...
