We looked forward to seeing the ancient manuscripts but unfortunately the building was closed due to maintenance!
There were other visitors walking around the site trying to locate the library building too but just a small typed note was attached to the door.

We found this fascinating place wandering through Bernkastel-Kues. This originally charitable complex was created in 15th century by a local bishop Nicholas of Cusa and included the St. Nikolaus-Hospital, church, vineyard and hospicium for old men. Amazingly it still serves the purpose of an old age home. It contains also a world-famous library and a wine museum. During our stay in Bernkastel-Kues the guided tours were on hold due to Covid precautions.

Superato il ponte che da Bernkastel porta a Kues subito sulla destra un antico ospizio in stile gotico che ospitava, e tuttora ospita, gli anziani piu' poveri del paese.

Zu einem Besuch der Stadt Bernkastel-Kues gehören die Besuche des Cusanus-Geburtshauses und des Cusanus-Stifts, mit der einzigartigen Bibliothek, einfach dazu.

Il s'agit en fait d'une maison de retraite située de manière très discrète dans un joli parc derrière l'église St Nicolas laquelle se situe de l'autre coté de la Moselle face à Bernkastel. Une clinique fait également partie de ce petit complexe. Ce site semble très peu fréquenté par les touristes. L'endroit est très reposant.

Das von Cusanus gegründete St. Nikilaus Hospital gilt heute noch als Seniorenheim. Die berühmte Bibliothek kann besichtigt werden.
Nikolus Cusanus, gebildeter Philosoph, Theologe und Mathematiker starb 1464 in Todi (Umbrien), sein Grab ist in der Kirche San Pietro in Vincoli in Rom, sein Herz aber ruht in der Kapelle des von ihm gestifteten St. Nikilaus Hospitals.

The historic Gothic building was erected in 1450. You can learn more background history behind. The chapel and library together with the elderly home are on Kues side.If you want to pay a visit there, pre-reservation is necessary.

Das Stift wurde im 15. Jahrhundert von einem Kuser Bürger, der in Rom Kardinal geworden war, als Stift für alte Menschen gegründet.
Die Gebäude sind bis heute erhalten und unverändert Altenheim.
Besonders Kapelle und Bibliothek sind sehr sehenswert.
Das Stift verfügt auch über gute Weinlagen in der Umgebung.
Ein Besuch in der Vinothek lohnt.
