Cochem an der Mosel St. Martin Kirche – ist eine alte, historische Stadtkirche. Drinnen relativ einfach ausgestattet. Der Eintritt war kostenlos.

Wenn man sich in der Innenstadt von Cochem aufhält, kann man mal einen Blick in die von außen recht schöne St.-Martin-Kirche werfen. Was man zu sehen kriegt, ist eine der am schlichtesten ausgestatteten (älteren) Kirchen die ich kenne. Der Amerikaner würde sagen "nothing to write home about".

Iglesia católica, ubicada en el paseo Mosel, estilo gótico y construida entre los años 1456-1503.
Lo de apreciar, los coloridos vitrales y la sencillez. Fue destruida durante la II Guerra Mundial y se reconstruyo en la década de 1950.

Even from the outside this Church is beautiful - the architecture and steeple is so unusual. It is worth going in and having a look as well at taking some time to contemplate life.

We found an open door in the evening, entered quietly. The lights were low, but the soft-lit glory of the windows and their meaning captured us. A welcoming place to meditate and pray.

The stark white spacious interior of this church is striking at first sight, but it is the beautiful stained glass work throughout the church that immediately caught my eye. They were done by the internationally renowned British stain glass artist, Patrick Reyntien (the figures) and Graham Jones (the color scheme).
The windows reminded me of Marc Chagall paintings. Each Gothic window uses 1 main color like red, yellow, green, or blue and with small bits of perhaps 1 other color. These windows along the upper sides of the church are long and narrow, either 2 or 3 panes wide. Each shows a biblical scene with the action and characters done in a black line drawing. The dominant color selected for the window washes over the drawing. For example, a green glass window shows scenes from the Garden of Eden; a blue glass window shows Jonah and the whale. These modern design windows were recent creations done by the elderly artist and his son. The design of the church could be considered a hall church as there are no side aisles or main nave.
The church is located about a block from the Markt square on Bernstrasse. Its "apse" (really the old choir) and onion domed tower are visible from the Moselle Promenade. Take a photo of the church from that position. The church was reconstructed in the 1950's hence its modern interior with smooth white plastered walls and faux vaulted white ceiling. Its thin round columns look like support columns that have been included for their functional value. The altar area has a modern beige decor with a block type altar and a large crucifix with silver applications that looks old. The silver organ pipes, placed on high alcoves on either side of the altar area, repeat the silver in that crucifix. In a niche opposite the altar is a silver bust of St. Martin, a relic, decorated with precious stones, a gift from the emperor in the 16th century. One feature that is a reminder of its medieval past is the choir area with its Gothic rib vaulting, strangely located at the back of the church, but the stained glass windows are modern designs.
The exterior of the church is constructed from beige quarrystone. Its onion domed tower stands over the rooftops and is a landmark for Cochem, along with Reichsburg Castle. The door/portal to enter the church was unremarkable.
Based on St. Martin's close position to the Markt and its dominant exterior, I would guess that this is, of the three Catholic churches in town, the main one. Its history goes back to the middle ages, mid 15th century. Presently, it still offers services. Allow about 10 -15 minutes for a quick visit to take photos.

The contemporary stained glass windows are particularly dramatic because of the unadorned interior.
St. Martin's church was mentioned in a chronicle from the year 1130; the building went through various iterations with the lasted being 1931/1933. The structure with the exception of the "old choir" was destroyed by bombing in 1945. In 1959 an extension was constructed incorporating the old choir and the stained glass windows by London artists Patrick Reyntiens and Graham Jones.
The unique onion dome was built between 1959 and 1963.

Католическая церковь Св. Мартина находится в самом центре Кохема недалеко от набережной и украшает собой и без того необыкновенно живописный пейзаж этого чудесного городка. История этой церкви насчитывает около девяти столетий. Первое упоминание в летописи о культовом сооружении на этом месте относится к 1130 году. Самая старая часть храма, построенная в середине XV века, сохранилась до наших дней, пережив январскую бомбардировку 1945 года. Другая часть церкви, перестроенная незадолго до начала Второй мировой войны, была полностью разрушена бомбами. Главное украшение церковного здания – колокольню с тройным луковичным куполом восстановили в 1959-1963 годах.
Осмотреть внутреннее убранство храма нам, к сожалению, не удалось – он был закрыт. Но, если вам доведется побывать здесь, обратите внимание на главную святыню церкви – бюст Св.
