These are the ruins of a roman castle. They are from the time when the sea reached up to it and it was used as a port as well. It is quite far away from Great Yarmouth about 2 hours of walking one way but it’s an impressive ruin. Quite big and well preserved over time. There’s also a church nearby that’s worth visiting. The area offers beautiful views and you can walk back to Great Yarmouth if you choose to or just follow the river path where there are numerous birds.

Lovely walk & stunning scenery.

Sunshine & blue skies enhanced a lovely greenfield walk. The fort ruins are impressive & very well maintained. No cost is involved for admission or parking. Unique in these times? A beautiful church stands nearby but was locked during our visit. Well maintained grave yard. Delightful village setting & well worth a visit.

A hidden gem!

I visited here with my husband for a mid-week day out. Neither of us had been before.

There is a dedicated car park which is completely free! It has plenty of spaces and well laid out.

We visited the church first (all well signposted). This is a beautiful little church and we enjoyed looking around it (albeit just the outside as it was locked up so we couldn't go in).

We then walked over to the castle ruins (again, well sign-posted).

The castle itself is so much bigger than we imagined it would be. Although just ruins, it is still fascinating to see and we enjoyed walking around it and reading the info boards.

The views over the water are spectacular and I could have spent a lot longer there had my husband not been itching to keep moving.

There are lots of places to sit and have a picnic and I think in summer it would be a great place to talk children and spend a few hours eating, exploring and following the walks around there.

Not everyone followed the rules that said dogs must be on leads but as it's a quiet time of year, maybe locals don't pay much heed yet. I would hope at busy times of year that people respect the rules.

I'd never even heard of Burgh Castle before and so glad we visited. It is somewhere that I would definitely like to return to, take a book and a picnic and just soak up the views.

And the free parking is a bonus!

This place is incredible. The remains are in fantastic condition and the information signs around the site help describe and explain how the fort would have looked in Roman times.

We were so surprised as to the size of the walls and the site as a whole.

We came without our children, but had they been with us they would have enjoyed the walk and sites too.

Free parking and free entry.
Lovely views over the Broads too. What’s not to like?

Bit meh need some imagination and let the information boards sell you the history.

Hourly Number 5 bus from Great yarmouth market gates bus station or Gorleston high street, careful you don't miss the Queens Head pub very very small bus stop. Precarious walk along narrow country lanes, no pavement, from the car park head left passing the old church, through a couple of nondescript fields and then the stone wall is at the end of the next field. Information boards assume a lot, seeing as so much of the castle has either fallen into the marshy river/breydon water or was destroyed by raiders but what is left standing is quite interesting and the view of Berney arms windmill and the RSPB marshes is very nice.

Surprisingly impressive site

I took my 10 year old for a visit to Burgh Castle while we were on holiday in Great Yarmouth.

I was honestly not expecting to see and enjoy the visit as much as I did. Many Roman sites are knee high ruins and require lots of imagination. These walls were easily 3 metres and very impressive! The site is on a prominent spot to view the estuary it guarded and looks very imposing from inside.

There's a short walk from the (free) car park to get to the castle, along some pretty lanes and you get a good view of the castle as you cross the final field where it sits.

As a free site, there's no shop or facilities, but there are some helpful boards to provide information and help fill in the blanks to give a better idea of what was there.

On the way out, we visited the nearby church which had an interesting round tower and dates from the 10th century. If you're earlier in the day than we were, you'd get a chance to buy a cup of tea and a cake here.

Not much here but worth a look!

Not much left of the castle, but signage helps give an idea of how the castle used to look. Beautiful location with amazing views. Along the Angles waysl so can take a walk along the river. Dog friendly, free car park & hourly bus but no othe facilities.

Scenic views

Hard to find, don't give up, just keep following the signs. Free car park circular walks well signposted longer walks incorporating Angles Way take in beautiful views across Breydon Water and beyond. The castle ruins gives yoh and idea of how impressive it would have been in the Roman times as the water came up to the castle. Thoroughly enjoyed our walk. The only downside was this seems to be a very popular place to walk a dog !!!!!! Not one dog we meet was on a lead and the owners seemed to be oblivious to the fact that NOT EVERYONE likes being sniffed at run up to or their food being investigated by unwanted attention. My message to dog owner please do nitmake the assumption that we are all dog lovers and to keep them on A LEAD be it a long one!!!! That way we can all benefit for this marvellous well kept ruin, and not worry about being bitten or standing in dog poo!! Thank you
