Really enjoyed our trip from Bowness-on-Windermere with a combined boat and steam railway return trip that was stunning in the sunshine all the way to Haverthwaite .
Everything is timed to allow you to make your connections making the whole experience excellent.
The Station Tea Room is excellent and do takeaways so we could have a Coffee and Scone jam and cream takeaway on board the train for our return trip to Lakeside.
Fantastic all round experience and highly recommended.

Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway
We booked the combined steam railway and Windermere lake cruise on a fair but cool day in early October. The car park at Haverthwaite is pay and display and costs £3 for the day. Cash only.
Apart from a group occupying the front coach, the rest of the train was barely half full.
The journey is only about 18 minutes to Lakeside where we met the boat, but it was entertaining to experience travel in a coach of a style I remember from my childhood.
Views are best if seated on the right hand side going forward.
There was a short delay before the lake steamer arrived and then a 80 minute trip with a stop at Bowness on the way to Ambleside at the top of the lake.
We had timed our trip to allow an hour and a half at Ambleside and had been advised by the tourist office that it would be only a 15 minute walk into the village where we could find lunch. In practice you would have to be young and fit to do the walk in 15 minutes – mostly on a footpath along a busy main road. It took us older folk 25 minutes to reach the outskirts of the village and we stopped at the first café which was open, to have a minimal snack before setting off back to the boat for the final sailing of the day back to Lakeside to meet the last train back to Haverthwaite where we had left the car.
The lake cruise was enjoyable with some good scenery and a useful commentary.
We were fortunate to find seats outside on the top deck on the way out, but was too cold to sit at the front on the way back. The boat has a café which serves hot and cold drinks and cold snacks, but no hot food.
We wish we had been advised to catch the earlier train from Haverthwaite, to provide more time at our destination on the lake. And with hindsight we would have booked only as far as Bowness which is more accessible from the dock.

My wife and I did the train and ferry trip to Bowness. We throughly enjoyed the experience of both the train and ferry. Well worth doing if you're looking for a good day out.

It is 45 years since I first went on this pretty little railway. I have been on it many times since and as far as the line goes, nothing has changed. The carpark has improved and the old station buildings are now considerably better and feature the ticket office, a decent gift shop and a nice little cafe. They have smaller engines but what they lack in stature, they make up in their power. Strong and robust. It was a bit of a job getting on and off the carriages, as the steps were considerably higher than I remembered. The staff were helpful throughout and the commentary was amusing. We had a thoroughly enjoyable day. My only wish is that the line was much longer. It does head off in the other direction but I have no idea how much track is still laid. It would be nice to bring it back to it's former glory.

Vintage wooden interior carriages with soft seating, and working steam train makes the experience worthwhile. It was my dogs first trin ride and she was so excited she jumped onto the train and sat looking at what was going on. The platform where the train arrives serves food & drink and looks "old fashioned."
There is also a gift shop where there is available gifts and guess what...dog friendly too!
Overall an amazing experience.

Lovely train, about 20 minutes each way, great park at one side but nothing at lakeside unless you are getting a connecting boat so we essentially got off the train then straight back on!

Did the return journey from Lakeside to Haverthwaite as part of a cruise/train combi. Love a wee steam train trip and for my husband the carriages in use brought back memories of travelling to York from Edinburgh as a child in the 60s. We had been here before so we skipped breakfast so we could have lunch here. The café at Haverthwaite Station is lovely with good home cooked food, best lunch we had while in the area.

Very good train ride. Cheap. Bought with a boat ride. Staff very friendly and helpful. Would recommend ride. Clear timings and good information from staff

Went from Haverthwaite to Lakeside and it was fun. Only takes about 20 minutes each way. Dogs welcome. Some tricky steps onto the train if you or the dog have mobility issues. Good value for money.

We bought the combined train/aquarium tickets for 8 of us - including two young children. Better value than buying them separately.
The train was plenty big enough for the school holiday passengers and the carriages were vintage, but very well maintained (no toilets in our compartment, but i was told there were some at the very end of the train. Didn't matter as we were getting off in a few minutes and there are loos at the station). Staff were efficient and very friendly. Lovely scones and cakes in the cafe after the return journey.
All in all a lovely experience for everyone.

Absolutely no problems in June, excellent organisation, very safe and secure, plenty of social distancing but that was obviously before restrictions were lifted.

The carriages are the older type with a couple of steps up to the door and quite narrow, i guess it depends how able you are really, give them a call and explain your needs to them, they maybe able to help.

Hi I’m not sure of the price as it was a few months ago but we stayed in Bowness-on-Windermere where we booked a boat trip and the steam journey at the same time from the quayside. Sorry couldn’t be more helpful

The railway might be slightly inclined but definitely not “steep”. It is a gentle experience, running along the lakeside through the forest.

I have looked at the photos I took on the trip to get the approx times. Depart on boat from Windermere 10.20; arrive Lakeside 11.15;Leave on train to Haverthwaite 11.20; Arrive Haverthwaite 11.40. We had dinner in Haverthwaite at the station cafe so we didn't return on the same train as some people seem to do.Leave Haverthwaite 12.55; arrive Lakeside 1.20. We had a look around the aquarium for which we had purchased a combined boat, aquarium and train ticket so we probably didn't get the first available boat back. Leave Lakeside 2.40 arrive back at Windermere 3.30. Hope that helps
