On one of the walls in the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Truro is a memorial you might walk past without giving it a second glance but it is well worth stopping and looking at because it is a very interest memorial with a lot of history behind it. Erected by members of the House of Lords and the House of Commons, it is a memorial to o Captain Thomas Charles Reginald Agar-Robartes, KCMG and CB. Affectionately known as 'Tommy', Captain Agar-Robartes (the eldest son and heir of Thomas Agar-Robartes, 6th Viscount Clifden) was elected MP for St Austell in 1908. On 18 September 1915, after a brief spell at home on parliamentary duties, Captain Tommy was recalled to the Western Front to assist in the planning for an assault on the French mining town of Lens. On 28 September 1915, Captain Tommy, in broad daylight, dragged one of his wounded sergeants to safety. Shortly after this act of bravery, for which he was unsuccessfully recommended for a Victoria Cross, Captain Tommy was, himself, severely wounded. He died on 30 September 1915 and, whilst his Commonwealth War Grave is in the Lapugnoy Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France, there is this imposing memorial in the cathedral. Captain Tommy was a distant relation, by marriage, of a John Robartes, a merchant and mayor of Truro who died in 1614, and whose 17th century memorial is also in the cathedral.
