Fascinating Cornwall

The story of Cornwall, and the incredible selection of Cornish minerals, is fascinating and well laid out. Clearly a lot of effort put into special events for younger people. Some of it is nevertheless an exhibition of stuff which worthy locals have brought back from their travels and donated to the museum. That bit is fairly incoherent. Well worth the visit.

It's so dull. The opening hours are silly (you want children to visit but you're closed after school and on Sundays - so I guess children can only visit on Saturdays then?)

Great for children

What an amazing museum, one of the best I have been in and that includes London Museums. I took my two grandsons age 9 and 6. We bought the £2 treasure maps and they were well worth it. The maps are really well thought out and include games and even lego!!!
The staff are friendly and helpful altogether a great place.

Since visiting there I heard, hopefully wrongly, that they might close this Museum down. That would be such a loss to the community so I sincerely hope that does not happen.

Excellent Museum

This is a great museum. The mineral collection is world-class- a lot smaller than the mineral gallery in the science museum in London of course, but with exhibits of comparable quality.
The exhibits are laid out in the old-fashioned way that makes them easy to view and think about, and they're housed in a superb building. The building also houses a very good cafe and art supplies shop, making it a real cultural hub.
Well worth a visit.

Great place - so entertaining and full of surprises, check out the Egyptology !

A warm welcome for us, and free return admission anytime in the next year. Excellent displays well laid out, with the emphasis on Cornish issues, history, people, geology, and industries. Of great interest to us was the Archaeology and industrial development, in particular mining. But there is much else to see and we enjoyed our tour around. The minerology exhibition was especially informative, and the geology has had a tremendous influence on the County. Comparing differences and mineral yield between the rock sample of lead, was something that had never occurred to us before. Then there was then the objects from the bronze age - very impressive. We were not expect Egyptology either!
RCM is a well thought out museum, and well worth visiting. The staff here are especially cheerful, and helpful

ONE of the things which can be very frustrating in a museum is if it is not well laid out.
This can leave you struggling your way round or mystified as to what message the museum is trying to get across.
There is no such difficulty with the Royal Cornwall Museum which offers a compact layout which is easy to follow and which informs visitors in a simple but effective manner.
When I visited I paid £5 to get in and then followed advice by starting in the geology section which had an extensive array of minerals of all colours, shapes and sizes.
It detailed some of Cornwall's rocks and gave the visitor a good idea of how the area was formed.
I was in Truro so it was natural that another section should be about the town while other rooms and galleries dealt with everything from wildlife and ceramics to paintings and even Egyptology.
Staff were a cut above excellent and were so helpful that I was given not just a plan of the museum but a very useful map of the town to help find my way about as well.
When I came to leave I felt not only that I'd had good value for money but that I'd been entertained and helped as well.
You can't ask much more than that from a museum and I got a lot more from the RCM than from some of the other museums I have been in. A high quality attraction.

A lovely view of Cornish history through the ages. Covering everything from flora & fauna to space travel. Worth a visit & entry fee to keep it available for future generations.

A welcoming place

Thank you for such a warm and friendly welcome you gave us when we returned to the museum today - keen to finish off the displays we'd not viewed a few days ago ... it really made our day!

We both enjoyed wandering around the museum, following a carefully organised one way system. The collections on show were interesting and set out in such a way that there was something for everyone.

Interpretation is just right - and the temporary exhibitions were very interesting indeed.

Covid security was excellent throughout and much thought has gone into making the area a safe space for all.

Thank you for SUCH a nice museum.

That our tickets are valid for a year is brilliant!!!

Fascinating glimpse into local history

Great way to spend an hour or so on a day trip to Truro.
Enjoyed rocks/fossil exhibits, art, ceramics, Egyptology, local history & a gallery showing artists” responses to isolation & confinement.
It would be handy to have a little guide (or an app) showing a plan if the layout & perhaps the highlights if you are short of time.
A beautiful light airy building with what looks tone a pretty café (but didn’t try the latter so can’t comment on that).
Staff were friendly and welcoming. We would definitely recommend a visit.
All the relevant Covid safety measures are in place so we felt safe and comfortable.
