Not sure whether to describe the bar as quirky, trendy or just comfortably different. Beers and ciders only and don't go looking for Carling. All beers and ciders are real ale qualities and when its gone, try a different one. Dog friendly, people friendly, pocket friendly.

Two of the nicest landlords you could ever meet, lovely atmosphere, dog friendly and most of all the best beer!! We came yesterday and just had to come back again today worth the 1 hour drive away from where we are saying glad we found you! We will most definitely be back!

Popped in here as a couple when walking past as it looked decent. The beer was perfect, service excellent and locals very friendly.
We recommend a visit here as it’s a proper local pub, so will return when next in Skipton.

We found this little gem in 2017 whilst visiting Skipton and had the best night. In 2021 we found ourselves living in Skipton and stumbled on this place again. As a drinker of real ales we have both enjoyed them in the Beer Engine. We have also enjoyed the warm welcome we receive from Adam and Steve whenever we go to the Beer Engine. They have both clearly worked in hospitality for many years and know exactly how to welcome customers who always leave as friends. The selection of real ales is the best in the area. Whilst also enjoying my ale I am also something of a wine drinker, having sampled the best of wines all over the world. Despite advertising the Beer Engine as a real ale pub, Adam and Steve offer a good selection of wines to suit all tastes. The wine is also reasonably priced in line with all of the bars in the area. My sister recently visited from the USA having lived there since 1983 and despite not being a real ale drinker, she was converted. We could not get her out of the place !!!!! If you haven't tried this fantastic little place, please do so. Wine or beer ??? Whichever is your tipple you will be catered for and will have the warmest of welcome.

If you are in Skipton and enjoy a beer don't miss the opportunity to pop in to this superb real ale bar. An ever changing selection of beers in excellent condition. The owners and their staff are friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable about the products they sell. A cosy and comfortable retreat from the busy high street with sensibly priced beers and a warm welcome. Will be back very soon.

Called in on Saturday afternoon and asked the owner of The Beer Engine for a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc wine.
Was offered either the house wine or a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc.
At the time of ordering drinks no mention was ever made of the £23.99 price tag for the bottle of the Sauvigon Blanc Mayfly wine.
As regular customers to The Beer Engine, on this occasion we felt let down that the owner could not have prior warned us that a bottle of Mayfly Sauvigon Blanc wine would and did cost us a wopping £23.99.
Along with a pint of beer, total cost of drinks came to just short of £30.
Sadly due to the customer service received we have now made the decision to not to return to The Beer Engine and will continue to drink in nearby The Boat House!

Hi there,
Thanks for review, I’m sorry that you didn’t enjoy your experience. We have 3 white wines on our house wine range, including a Sauvignon blanc at the price of £18 a bottle. This is the Chilean Sauvignon.
We offer the Mayfly Marlborough Sauvignon as well, which is, as you say in your review, more expensive, this is why we differentiate between both the house wines and the New Zealand Marlborough as you also say in your original post.
Those who drink and buy the New Zealand Marlborough do tend to understand that it is generally more expensive than other wines, (similar to most pubs) so we have never felt the need to go through our pricing with people, as well as the fact wine menus are also available at the bar and on the clipboards scattered around the pub, so that guests can check prices.
All our wines are sourced from a respected supplier local to Skipton, one that many pubs use, and if you do price check with other pubs you will find our wines are reasonably priced, it’s just that the one you selected was the New Zealand Sauvignon, which tend to be more expensive, but again ours is reasonably priced in comparison with other pubs.
We do feel it’s a shame that you felt the need to put a Tripadvisor up for this, rather than come to us whilst in the pub, or even maybe questioning it at the point of purchase. We would readily have replaced it and refunded the difference. We fly through stocks of this wine so it would have been no issue.
We pride ourselves on our customer service and many of our reviews compliment this, with many people even on the day you are talking about (one of our busiest days of the year due to Christmas Markets) saying how lovely and welcoming the the staff, owners & pub is.
We wish you all the best for Christmas and beyond, and perhaps you will try us again in future. (just stay away from the New Zealand and go for the cheaper Chilean Sauvignon!) ;)

The beer engine may be up a little hidden back street in skipton and not alot of people no about it, but if your lucky enough to find it your in for a real treat, a big selection of ales and ipas, a warm welcome and a proper atmosphere! You don't find many places like this so make sure you visit
