What a Beautiful setting. This is the type of walks we love, So natural, woody and really beautiful. Shame the building next to the waterfall is a Ruin as it could make a Beautiful setting for a cafe. The waterfall is Nature's Beauty at its best! Definitely worth the walk, and one not to miss.

Well well..i ve been coming this way near here for nesrly 4 decades and never knew this exsisted...we parked up at the school which was free...maybe enough for bout 40 cars...saw a few ramblers near a brook and just thought we.ll head across that way...just a little trail path...not sign posted but i heard bout this place on here anyway.. headed off..about half a mile in the views are spectacular!..you can go up more into more views ot down to the mill ponds..we did both ..and every 30 steps or so past the first mill pond are sites of pure besuty right next to an old mill/grind works..some plaques with info on history are scattered..and some lovely pics can be got of the waterfalls..not good for people with hard of walking difficulty ...but such a lovely glinse at nature at its best..few steps each time take you to more pic spots and more history...as we got to the bottom there was a few cars parked maybe 10 but narrow road ...we will be back ...! Its all free ..its not a tourist known spot..no toilets or coffee shop etc but take a picnic and flask and sit wherever you like to take in the beautiful place...

We've been here before so know it's amazing, however the review left on the 22nd was correct. The key areas of the ruins are blocked off over weekends and bank holidays. Still a pleasant walk around but no ruins or water falls. Sign in the pictures for your reference!

I went and did the Lumsdale Falls walk yesterday including the waterfalls and ruins and have to say that the lengthy negative review below dated 22nd July was totally over the top and would hate to think that reading it would put people off visiting. Yes, there are fances and locked gates around a couple of the ruins but you can still see very clearly inside without trampling all over the "fragile remains" as the notices clearly say and potentially spoiling things for future generations of visitiors. It's not like there are 8foot high panels of sheet metal completely blocking any view whatsoever ! As you can see I amanged to take some decent photos quite comfortably - go and see this wonderful little place for yourself, it is quite beautiful ...

Not the easiest place to find, or to park, but worth the effort for the scenery. Parts of the ruins are fenced off, and I believe closed at the weekend, but the walk through the valley is stunning. Good luck to the volunteers who have a massive job on their hands if they are to restore the ruins.

On previous visits to Matlock I concentrated around the area near the Heights of Abraham but on this occasion I stayed around Matlock's beautiful park and market.

Absolutely shocking to see this place all locked up, the owners should be ashamed of themselves, why have history and not be able to display it or show it off. Let's lock it away out of sight for noone to appreciate it or remember it's past!
Was better years back when you could go and not have a eyesore of fences in sight and actually wander around, appreciate the history and beauty of the place. Went today to get upto date photos and after checking the website to make sure it was still accessible, it said open from 1st April 2022 Monday to Friday, so off we set off from lincoln...so not just up the road!!
Arrived and looked okay, went to the first waterfall and I was really taking in how it had changed but still lovely, climbed the first steps and then you come across a mass of metal gates and fences, all locked!!
Shocking, 2 mins walk past one waterfall and then that's it, the rest is all blocked off, no access, metal gates, really don't waste your time going as you'll be disappointed.
Met another couple who was very disappointed, said to us, why is it locked up when it said its open,I said to them, the owners have spoilt it, as per usual, history which can't be appreciated.
I'm so happy I have memories of when you could visit and appreciate it.
The owners will probably come back and make out it's health and safety or to preserve the ruins but I don't take that, it's very easy to use the health and safety bollocks or the preserve the buildings, I'm sorry but a path running around the buildings doesn't touch the buildings doesn't ruin them. Otherwise all these Abbeys and monastery and cathedrals, noone would be allowed in, they would all be closed and shut off using that excuse.
Maybe you want to take down your big fences, rip down your steel gates and actually let history be appreciated, even charge a few quid to let people wander through if need be, get some volunteers or paid staff to be on hand to give information on the buildings and history of the place and to keep an eye on visitors. At least people can appreciate it as it used to be, not locked up and shut off and then falsely advistise it as open.
Very disappointed and will make sure people are aware of this to go elsewhere, I certainly won't be back in a rush especially when we have so many places in the UK and the peak district with lots of history and owners who appreciate what they have and allow people to discover its history without spoiling it's appearance or blocking it off

A beautiful must-see sight if visiting the Peak District or surrounding areas. We parked at the top of the waterfall opposite the school - we arrived at around 10:30am so there was plenty of space to park (in fact, I think we were the only ones there at this time).
We walked downhill through the housing estate so we could walk up the side of the waterfall from the bottom up. The waterfall itself was absolutely stunning with beautiful surrounding woodland. Some of the area is fenced off for safety but pretty much everything else is completely accessible. At the top there is a gorgeous little lake too.
If you visit please don't litter! We saw a few sweet packets, cans, tissues etc all thrown into the waterfall. Such a shame.

Unfortunately from 1st April the main route to the falls is closed at the weekend and bank holidays. We didn’t realise this so we were quite disappointed that we couldn’t get a good view of the waterfall at all. The walk as a whole is nice but only about 45 mins. We tried to make it longer by walking around the streets a bit more.

No, I would say not and the interesting areas are not accessible.
A total waste of time visiting.
Can dogs swim anywhere? We’re trying to teach our puppy.

As a dog walker I wouldn’t let my dog off here at all, way too many sudden drops, even at the top by the pools there’s a few deep drainage spots

Hello,
I am looking to visit here this coming weekend, please could someone advise us firstly on where to park our car and if it is pay and display and also if anyone can recommend any nice pubs we could grab some lunch nearby for afterwards.
Thanks in advance :)

The Bentley Brook Brewing Co. is a small brewery café/taproom/bottle shop offering alcoholic, soft and hot drinks, as well as bar snacks/nibbles. It's only about 2 minutes from the bottom of the waterfalls, and gives you the chance to sit in the brewery (when it's not being used for brewing!).

Hello, I’m planning on visiting Lumsdale valley this week with my 9 year old daughter.
Is there walk ways to follow? If not is it fairly simple to see everything there is to see and find our way back to the car park or should we seek some guidance of a route?
Any advice is much appreciated

If you park by the school and follow the river until you want to turn around and come back you will be able to retrace steps following the river back upstream.

There isn't a car park. It isn't an attractionh, it's a steep wooded valley. You'll need to park somewhere else, probably by the school at the top and walk. Take proper walking boots too.

Hi, we are going to be staying in Lumsdale in January - I have been trying to find details of walks in the area. Up to 10 miles. Any tips where I can look? Thank you

Hi, if you try a site called walkingenglishman (it wont let me add the link) and search peak district I believe some local walks are on there. There are some lovely walks around Lumsdale, Tansley and Matlock areas.

Just wanted to pass on the thanks of the Lumsdale Valley Project volunteers to those of you who provided all the very helpful answers to this question. Also to say how much we appreciate that visitors either walk or use public transport to reach the Lumsdale Valley. There is so little parking here and it is lovely to keep vehicular traffic through the Valley to a minimum.

The walk down the Valley begins in Upper Lumsdale, (off the A632)opposite Highfields upper School. we strongly advise parking here as parking is extremely limited at the bottom end of the valley. The walk from the top to the bottom is just over half a mile if you follow the main path route down.

I took us about an hour and a half but you really can make it as long or short as you like, as easy to turn back or further down there are walks off into other areas. You can sit on benches near the ponds and would be a lovely picnic area. Hope this helps
