Thought a nice local castle visit would be nice and full an hour or two. Followed google maps as no local signage. Got to spot of a closed gate. Kept driving g and found lay by, took a picture from far and that’s it.

No clear entrance, sign or acces

Schöne Ruine und kostenlos

Eine offene Ruine zum Darin-Herumklettern - super! Und das Ganze ist auch noch öffentlich zugänglich und kostenlos. Besser geht es ja kaum.
In den Wiesen der Gegend tummeln sich zudem sehr viele interessante Vögel, u.a. Grauammer, Braun- und Schwarzkehlchen, Rauchschwalben, etc..

A Gothic Revival style castle that should b e seen

Clifden Castle was built by John d'Arcy between 1812 and 1815. D’Arcy family could not afford to maintain it and it fell into disrepair. In the interim, it passed through a few buyers and disputed ownership passed on to the group of tenants. In 1935, the Irish Land Commission purchased the land from the cooperative and passed it back to be held jointly. But the house was now missing roof and fell into ruin. However, it is still a classic Gothic Revival style edifice and should be seen.

Worth Half the Walk

There were a few parking spots on a patch of gravel outside the castle gates. You can then walk all the way down to the castle or you can walk about halfway down and still get a decent view. We walked to the curve where the castle came into view and met some people hiking back up from the castle. We asked if the walk was worth it and they all said not really. So, if you've seen a lot of ruins in Ireland already, this is not worth the walk. But I still enjoyed seeing it and snapping a picture by only walking part way down.

Wonderful Ruin

If you park-up near the large arch off to the left of the Sky Road out of Clifden and then walk down the gravel track you will discover a wonderful 'hidden' ruin. This nineteenth century 'castle' is slowly collapsing so try and get to see it whilst most of it is still standing but do exercise care and enter at your own risk.

It is set overlooking the water and is wonderfully atmospheric. There is no entry fee and no visitor information but a bit of online research reveals it was built as the family house in 1818 by the man who started the town of Clifden. However, after changing hands it was then eventually abandoned to beautiful dereliction.

Nice Hike to the Ruins

A voir pour une balade lorsqu'on du temps à perdre

Après une marche le long des champs à voir les animaux : chevaux, moutons on arrive sur ce monument qui ne mérite pas spécialement un détour.
La végétation et la faune l'entourant : un vrai plus en mai.

Castle off Sky Road

We were doing the Sky Road trip , a beautiful road worth driving , and came across the Clifden Castle. The views down over the fields with the ocean in the background was amazing. It was a perfect sunny day to.

The reason for a 4 rating is that the Castle is not well signposted & a bit of a walk down from the road. Not easy to park along most parts of Sky Roads. From what I gather you cross over private farms to get to the Castle so not sure if thats why its not well signed.

Apart from that the buildings are in good condition & worth the 10 min or so stroll down the hill , the views alone make this a worthwhile visit
