Located within a locked room of the local community centre, the Story of Waterville Cable Station is a small but interesting exhibition, available free to the public whenever the community centre is open. The exhibition consists of a number of very informative panels, books, and artefacts that transform a historic achievement in transatlantic communication into a fascinating record of, human endeavour over the elements, explanation of local life back then, and how local homes were once important buildings for the maintenance of international communication which shaped the layout of the town. It is truly a shame that coaches don't stop here, or at the Skellig Gift Store, where more information on the local area is provided free of charge. There is also no footpath/sidewalk from the sea front to the community centre, so you do need to either walk along the road, or take a car, to visit the site. But if you have the time, do make the effort to visit, staff are most helpful and it is most rewarding visit if you enjoy history and learning about Waterville's past.

Hi Clive Thank you very much for the review and delighted that you enjoyed your visit. Please spread the word. I'm not sure if you have left the area but I'd also recommend a walk around the cable station -there you will find the original offices, the "new offices" and the houses that were built for the staff. Also there is a commemorative stone to mark the Waterville Cable station's involvement in the longitude determination of Montreal from 1892 - we are hoping to put together a display panel on the story of this great endeavor shortly. thanks again

I'd been here before maybe 20 odd years ago, and was pleased to see it's still as popular as ever. With communication via social media and smart phone now so ingrained in society it was even more amazing to see what the early pioneers of communication achieved. Well worth the money, with them the internet may never have happened.

HI, I'm glad you enjoyed your visit to the area, I am wondering if you went to the centre on Valentia Island as our exhibition in Tech Amergin is free entry.

This display on the history of the Cable Station is located in Tech Amergin - it used to be a school and is now a community center used for photography classes, computer rooms, a small theater, art gallery displays, movies, creative writing classes, and more..... it's a lovely spot to pop in, any time it's open.

The history of the Cable Station exhibit is extensive - you can sit down for hours and dig through old history books and papers, or you can take a short amount of time to read the posters and view the old historic photos and displays of cables, etc.

Either way, worth a visit.

Additionally, in Waterville near the Craft Market (not downtown, but about 1 km out of the village) is the Heritage Gallery. There are 140+ posters outlining he history of the cable station and in fact, all over the Iveragh peninsula (better known as the Ring of Kerry, though the Ring of Kerry is just a tiny part of this beautiful area).

If you're into history, both are a must see!

The story of the trans Atlantic Cable between Ireland and the USA is very much part of the history of Waterville, Valentia and Ballinskelligs. Many of the fine houses built by the Cable Staion Co. still stand but if you want to read about its history and see some of the many exhibits connected with the Cable Station, you should visit Tech Amergin, Waterville.

Before the world wide web there were the "cables". With them it suddenly was possible to send messages from one continent to another in a relatively quick way. Today global communication is nothing special anymore, it's common use and nobody really thinks about the fact that text messages, pictures and movies can be transmitted around the world within seconds.

It was a different picture in the mid 19th Century. Letters were then the most common way of sending messages. But it took time. Too long for certain messages. Especially in the growing economy of the industrialized world. So new ways had to be found. Like connecting Europe with North America with a cable. No easy task then. And many first efforts failed. Finally in 1866 the first telegraphic link between Valentia Island and Newfoundland was established. Ballinskelligs followed in 1874, Waterville in 1884. With these three stations County Kerry was the heart of global communication.

The exhibition at the Tech Amergin Waterville enables visitors to travel back in time and to re-live these exciting decades. Many original pieces from that time can be seen or even touched, like pieces of the cable itself or from the cable station. Along with many panels, pictures and newspaper clips you get an impressive overview of this truly glorious time in the Caherciveen/Valentia/Ballinskelligs/Waterville region.

In addition to the general exhibition workshops are being organized at the Tech Amergin regularly, where experts give indepth information about that particular time. Keep checking the website of the Tech Amergin for special events.

With time the present exhibition might grow into a whole museum. It would be worth it. The history is there, at one's fingertips and there are still people around with memories of the Waterville Cable Station, when it was still in operation. I'm sure with a visit to the exhibition and the growing interest in this exciting past, the chances for a comprehensive museum will get better and better.
