I visited the porcupine pantry today with two of my friends. We all visit on a regular basis as is a convenient place for us to meet up and have a coffee. After having a coffee we decided we were feeling quite hungry so ordered some lunch from the menu. We ordered a soup, a bacon, Brie and cranberry panini and a sausage baguette. The soup was lovely but the bread served was half a baguette which came out hard and cold. The panini was great, but my friend's sausage baguette came out cold and the sausages looked raw so she didn't eat any more than the first bite. As well as this we also found a hair on the make do plate/box we had been given for the baguette. We love coming here but unfortunately today has really put us off and will be sticking to coffee from now on.

Thank you for your review and visiting the Porcupine Pantry. I am delighted to read about your regular visits, and the feedback of the quality of our homemade soup and paninis. Our baguettes are cooked fresh daily, so it is unusual to hear of a cold and hard baguette, but I will ensure this is not the case moving forward.
We cook hundreds of sausages on a weekly basis, with each batch going through our policy checks to ensure they are all cooked fully before service. To keep up demand we have a cook, chill and reheat system, which ensures the sausages have two opportunities to reach a safe temperature. It is therefore extremely unlikely that raw sausages would be served.
It is a shame the issues above and the hair incident were not raised to our team on the day, who would have happily replaced these for you.
We do hope this rare incident will not put you off returning, and experiencing our usual high standards of food and hygiene. Thank you.

Gardens were lovely and house was gorgeous. Toy museum was interesting too. Woodland wound was cute. Had tea and cake and cake was yummy. Only a few little things could be improved -wasn't clear using the Gardeners world 2 for 1 voucher as was more to pay when we arrived, extra for the house. Happy to pay it of course but could have been clearer on website. Also when we entered the house the lady checked our receipt which was fine but felt she was a little rude and pretty much accused us of not paying as she hadn't read the receipt clearly at first to see we'd used the 2 for 1. Wasn't a nice feeling felt a bit looked down upon. Other staff lovely especially in the rooms in house talking about the decor. Wouldn't put me off coming again though.

Interesting house and toy museum. Informative guides to read in all the rooms. Probably better to go in the summer for the gardens as most of the flowers had finished although we had a good walk around. Nice cafe with plenty of seating outside. Delicious cakes.

What a wonderful place to visit. House is amazing - so much history. All the guides were so friendly and knowledgeable - they really made our day. We have recently visited the nearby Hever Castle and Chartwell and if we had to pick one would say Penshurst is our favorite (although all are wonderful for different reasons). When we visited in September when garden was still nice but not colourful as one would expect at this time of year. We will be back next spring to see the peonies and roses. My tip is to join Historic Houses which gives free entry to Penshurst and many other places

We were disappointed and slightly shocked that the famous picture said to be of Elizabeth I dancing the volta was a reproduction. The original is hidden away in the private part of the house. This isn't clear from the promotional material available before you visit and in fact the poor quality print in display isn't described as such. We were also unable to find the stump of the Sidney oak in the grounds though staff tried to help us.

Thank you for your visit to Penshurst Place and your review. Penshurst is home to a large collection of original works of art including paintings, tapestries, furniture and armour dating from the 15th to the 19th centuries. The painting you refer to is part of Lord De L’Isle’s private collection and so hangs within his apartments. We are able to display a giclee print of the original within the State Rooms to allow visitors to enjoy the details and intricate story of the painting from very close range. We are glad you were able to enjoy a visit to our 2500-acre parkland. The Sidney Oak can be viewed from the public footpath that crosses the estate so we hope you decide to return to Penshurst and enjoy the views over the beautiful Kentish countryside.

We did this because because we were bored with Hever Castle- we wished we’d come here first and spent more time exploring the house and gardens
Parts of this place are ancient and the Baron hall cannot help but be inspiring- you have to remember that part of this place was built in the 13th century
Anyone in the slightest bit interested in English history can not help but be impressed by the grandeur of not only this building but it’s surroundings
Again the pleasure is enhanced by the enthusiasm and engagement of the staff
You can self guide and read about each room but it’s not until you speak to the staff who then begin to fill in the details you can’t read about that the visit comes alive
In hindsight we left too little time for this property, it deserves a full day

Wonderful gardens and House.
We spent about three house all told, getting there at 10 when the gardens opened, had coffee and cake then into the House at 11.
There was spaces inside and outside the cafe, plenty of room if a coach load of people arrived.
The grounds were being attended to and even with the recent dry weather they were very good. The historical information in one of the castlets was extremely interesting.
To believe that the Barons Hall has the original rod that was built in 1341 is amazing. The "room attendants" were marvellous in proving answers to our questions and we perhaps lingered longer than others as they were so interesting.
We did not have time to walk around the extensive grounds, well save that for another time.

Thank you for your review, it is lovely to hear you found the House and Toy interesting. We are currently expanding our Porcupine Pantry café with the intentions of it being finished by Spring 2023, so we hope you can visit us again on a sunny drier day, to give you the chance to see what our gardens offer and enjoying our newly extended Café.

What is the best way to get to Penshurst Place from Leigh Station?
I would love to spend some time here when I go to London in the near future. Is there a bus that runs on a periodic schedule or would it be better to take a taxi (or even walk)?

Hi, I do believe there is a bus from Leigh but cant tell you what number or how often. But I would think a taxi would be the best option if they have taxi's at Leigh station. Hope this is of some help.
Is the car park hard standing or gravel

I use a walking stick, sometimes two . Do all the steps around the place have hand rails? I can manage when they do. Is there an accessible route around?

My sister isn’t very mobile following a fall and is using a wheeled walker. She can manage a few stairs, if they aren’t too steep. I’m wondering how much of Penshurst Place would be accessible for her?
Michael H

The grounds are quite flat - eg the Knot Garden - and the Great Hall is accessible after a few steps up. Upstairs apartments would not be good for someone with mobility problems.

Does anybody know who has visited recently (writing this 6th July) if the peonies have opened? Visited 7 weeks ago and they looked like they would bloom soon!

Hi Krisyyy, we're afraid the Peonies have a famously short bloom and are no longer in flower. If you visit our website you can add your name and email address to our alert list and we can let you know ahead of time in 2019 when we expect them to bloom.

There are indeed. We have a self-service restaurant with hot and cold meals, cakes, sandwiches and drinks, as well as a coffee shop at our visitor entrance. Toilets are both at the visitor entrance and the top of the gardens.

How big is the Toy museum? Is it worth organising a school trip here or is the museum too small?
TwoDividedByZero
ลอนดอน, UK312 ผลงาน
If you are thinking of making the visit with a school group purely for the toy museum, I'd say absolutely, definitely not! It's a lovely little museum but is very small, and I simply can't imagine a group of children fitting in easily, even if you split a class up into very small groups, nor can I imagine their attention being held for more than a few minutes. The toys are in glass cases and the information about them is in a booklet that the lady on the desk gives you. I've popped into it a few times with my children on our visits there on the past few years (they are currently Y8 and Y6!) and although they are sensible and curious children and like to have a look, I can't say that we have ever spent longer than ten to fifteen minutes in there.
However, Penshurst as a whole could be a good school trip, depending on the age you are thinking about, as the house might be good from a historical point of view for older children (KS2), the gardens are nice for a runabout, and best of all there is a fantastic adventure playground - but that's very big and all on grass so best left for the summer!
If you have a look under 'Groups' on their website they explain what they can offer for schools there.
