We went in the rainy season, hadn't really started yet, seen the videos that came out on social networks now in January with several water trumpets. But it rained every day, the afternoon and night, it wasn't heavy rain.
We stayed in Alto Paraíso for two days, if you don't have a guide, go to the CAT (Center for Tourist Care), they give great tips, waterfalls etc. The city is super busy, various places to eat, buy souvenirs and have fun.
We will definitely return in the dry season to take advantage of the waterfalls.

This review is for the entire area, not just the national park, as most attractions actually lie outside of the park's boundaries. Thought I'd post something for people travelling with kids, as when I was doing my research I struggled to find much advice about travelling with kids in this area.
So should you take kids to an isolated area where most attractions are only accessible via a hike of some sort? In my opinion, yes! While some of the hikes aren't appropriate for kids, there are enough attractions that are reasonably accessible.
Another question I struggled with - should you go during rainy season? Again, our conclusion is yes! True, it rained every day, but at least in our case the rain almost always lasted for an hour or less and always happened in the afternoons. The dirt roads we visited were largely in reasonable condition and we've only got stuck once when a road flooded and we had to wait about 20mins for the water to subside. Obviously, a 4x4 vehicle is a must. Travelling during this season meant everything was super green, temperatures weren't too high (clouds often made it more pleasant to hike), and there were hardly any other tourists around which meant prices were lower.
One more question - should you travel independently or join a tour? We're fiercely independent travellers so prefer to do things by ourselves if we can, and we found this area quite easy to do so. If you're used to travel independently, no need to join a tour here, with one exception which I mention below.
We stayed in Alto Paraiso which is substantially bigger than Sao Jorge and I'd recommend this choice for families with kids.
Places we visited:
Jardim de Maytrea - an 'energy spot' on the road from Alto Paraiso to Sao Jorge. Great panoramic views from the easy-to-miss roadside parking, worth a brief stop during the day, sunset or night-time. Free, 10-15mins.
Vale da Lua - we thought this place was over-hyped. A stream carved into grey rocks, falling into two pools. Not great for swimming and a couple of hairy moments with the kids on slippery surfaces, but overall worthwhile for the unique views and rock formations. 800m walk each way, mostly exposed to the sun, so best to come early / late or when it's cloudy, but avoid when rainy. Small fee, 45-60mins round trip.
Cachoeira do Lajeado - lovely and entirely shaded walk to a couple of pools with small waterfalls between them. Easy and perfect for kids, and great for swimming. Small fee, 30mins for the return walk, allow at least 30mins for a swim.
Corredeiras - powerful wide waterfalls with copper-coloured water and impressive cerrado backdrop. Within the national park and the most accessible part of the main hike, which is 12km long through exposed terrain and not right for kids. This particular waterfall is served by a van that leaves every round hour from the park gate and returns every 30mins after the hour. This makes visiting this waterfall with kids quite expensive as you need to pay the park fees and for the van, so while we had a great time here I wouldn't say it's a must. From memory, park entrance was R$40 and van R$70 per person. Van takes 10-15mins each way, followed by a 5-10mins easy walk on a boardwalk. Choose between allowing 30 or 90 mins for a swim.
Cachoeira do Segredo - the toughest hike we tried, and overall the kids handled it well. 3.5km each way, 80% of which shaded, easy walk throughout with the exception of the last 100m. The most impressive and tallest waterfall we saw. Note the start of the walk isn't marked correctly on Google, it's a good 30mins drive or so on a dirt road. Small fee, allow an hour's walk each way and at least 30mins for a swim.
Cachoeira Dos Cristais - tiny waterfalls next to a restaurant, just off the road. Perfect with small kids, and the pasteis at the restaurant are good. Small fee, no walk, come for lunch and stay for a swim.
Paralelo 14 - a roadside stop marking another local 'energy point' for the 14th parallel south, where Machu Pichu is. Cute but only if you're passing by. Free.
Cachoeira Santa Bárbara - way off piste and requires a full day, or at least 7hrs. We were told you cannot access this area without a guide so we booked one in advance. I now know that the only reason one needs a guide here is that the community that lives nearby requires it, there is no logistical reason and the guide didn't add much to the experience. From what I've seen, there's no need to book a guide in advance and drive them to the entrance, you can just show up and pick up a guide there. The 27km dirt road takes a good 50-60mins to drive, there's a beautiful viewpoint along the way. From the park entrance, there's a 5min drive to the parking, and then a 10mins drive by a pickup truck that costs an additional R$30 per person return. From where the pickup truck drops you, there's a 1.8km walk each way, the track is almost entirely exposed to the sun but it's well maintained so easy walk with the kids. There are two pools between the waterfalls, the slightly higher one is much nicer. The sandy floor makes the water look a dreamy blue, which sets this waterfall apart from all others and also makes it ideal for kids as the pool's shore is sandy and accessible. There are also monkeys here, which we didn't see elsewhere, another bonus point for kids. Allow 25-30mins for the walk each way and at least an hour for the swim. Your guide will bring you to a simple buffet restaurant in the village afterwards, which at R$50 per person is well worth it.
Cachoeira das Loquinhas - a stream forming a series of pools along a boardwalk. Very close to Alto Paraiso and easy walk with the kids. You can settle in one of the lower pools and have the pool for yourself without having to walk much at all. Avoid when it rains as the boardwalk can get slippery. Small fee, walk 5-15mins each way, allow at least 30mins for a swim.
Hope you find this useful!

The park is well marked, when we arrive are passed the directions of which the best way to do. The price is 48 per person and charge parking, 35 reais per car (found expensive). I did the hopping track which is 11km in total and has steep climbs.

GO TO THE PARK DO THE NIGHT PIST AND PICK THE SUNRISE!!! IT'S VERY WORTH IT!
We went yesterday 12/09 to take the night trail of the national park. We start at 3:30 in the morning the walk and the sky on the edge of Rio... Geeent the most beautiful thing in the world. The Guide who accompanied us is super engaged in the region and knows a lot about the national park and the cerrado. So it made all the difference to go with him. In addition to being a light and relaxed person, very responsible and concerned with the well-being of everyone, giving us support from before we meet until after we dismiss. We've pointed too much to Victor Winston. His wpp is 62998015428 and his Instagram is @bixosoltonasmata

I went with a group of 8 friends, we made the yellow track, we met the Corredeiras, Carrossel and the last of the Garimpão Cachoeira. The path is too beautiful, a little pulled, pq a good part is exposed to the sun, but worth every second, it is a magical place, really very special. I highly recommend hiring a Guide, we rely on the experience of @chicoguiachapada - 62 98115-0774, he is a geologist, in addition to enriching the walk with explanations about the vegetation and the rocky formations, he worked in the park as a volunteer for a while, so he knows the paths very well, he took us to the waterfalls in the empty hours, in all we stayed practically with the waterfall only for us.
We opted for the company of Chico in 5 of the 7 days q we stayed in the chapada, and I can say q was the most correct decision, in addition to bringing safety and tranquility, we met muuuito about the bioma with him, it was a very nice exchange!

National park is a must. Value your geology, a billion-year-old rocky square of quartzite. How wonderful it is to enjoy the beauties of Rio Preto and all its richness. For this attraction , always think about hydration , because the trail is dry and warm to go back .

This place is amazing and very worth hiring a Guide. Having someone who knows the park helps optimize the time to show the best sites, enjoy more of the river baths and even explain about the site. Our Guide, @chicoguiachapada, is a geologist and has contributed a lot to enrich our experience.

I'm looking at visiting Chapada Dos Veadeiros National Park in late May 2023. I've put aside 5 days for:
• Mirante da Janela and Abyss Waterfall hike
• Segredo Waterfall and Vale da Lua (Moon Valley)
• Almecegas Waterfall 1 and 2
• Santa Barbara Waterfall in Cavalcante
• Couros Fall
Few questions:
1. Is late May a good time of year to go?
2. Can I go solo if I hire a 4WD?
2. Will I need a guide to get to any of these places?
3. If I do need a guide, do I have to book in advance or can I book one when I arrive?
4. Have I left out anything worth seeing from the list above?
Thanks.
