Le service de SPM Ferries était impeccable et efficace, à l'heure. Les bateaux (le Suroît et le Nordet) étaient très confortables et le capitaine a été assez gentil pour avertir les passager de la présence de baleines. La seule difficulté fut d'essayer de téléphoner à leur bureau car le numéro de téléphone est en France et difficile d'accès du Canada. Heureusement, on nous a donné un numéro de téléphone canadien que voici: 709-832-2374. Cette information pourrait être utile aux passagers qui veulent communiquer avec SPM Ferries à partir de Terre-Neuve.

Well managed and comfortable ferry to and from St. Pierre. Make reservations early. We didn't take our rental car so left it in a secure and fenced lot in Fortune, Nfld. I think the lot was run by stagecoach tours - ask for Brian. The ferry was fast and smooth. Luggage is taken by the crew and stored on board. Fun to go into France and have your passport stamped :)

Ferry to St Pierre..

The storm Dorian which by passed Newfoundland did cause enough waves that the ferry was cancelled..Consequently this portion of our trip was cancelled ..So we drove around what they call is the book a 4 hr drive.. lovely ..

My wife and I went to St Pierre for Labour Day weekend....the boarding and disembarking went well on both sides ...larger bags are taken by crew and stored on board ....seats are not assigned so you can sit wherever....soft drinks and snacks are available to buy BUT with euros only

Found the ferry office a bit obscure in the town but with GPS was able to find it.

Ferry Good - Parking Bad

Saint-Pierre Ferry. In mid-August 2019 we spent two nights in Saint-Pierre, a self-governing territorial overseas collectivity of France, situated in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean near the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. One of the methods to get to the islands is by the French ferries which departs Newfoundland in the town of Fortune. Right now, it is a passenger ferry only as the docks are not completed to load/offload vehicles. Work is underway constructing these docking facilities. The ferry trip is only one and one-half hours each way with very comfortable seating. Since you are traveling between Canada and France, you are required to go through customs & immigrations when docking in each location. The ferries are owned and operated by the French of Saint-Pierre. We were very pleased with the ferries themselves.
Our biggest issue was with the parking in the Newfoundland town of Fortune. The web page for the ferry does not give a lot of detail concerning the parking and leaving your vehicle in Fortune for the duration of you stay on Saint-Pierre. I did call and was told that yes, parking was provided and we had to check in at the Fortune ferry office to receive a parking permit. Upon arriving at the ferry office, we were informed that the parking fee was $11.50 per night and therefore we would have to pay $23.00 for the two nights. Given the price we were expecting a fenced in, secure parking lot. NOPE. We had to drive our car to one of a few lots around the town of Fortune, which was on the side of the road, no fence and no security. Having paid for the permit and the requirement to immediately check in for the ferry, we had no choice but to leave our vehicle with no guarantee it would be there undamaged upon our return. It was our understanding that the parking was under the control of the Newfoundlanders and not the French.
The second issue was the waiting lounge for the ferry in Fortune which was very small and only had enough seating for about one half of the waiting passengers. The ferry was scheduled to depart at 4:30PM and the loading of the ferry did not start until 4:15 which saw a mad rush of people for the door once it was opened. This was in sharp contrast to the lounge and departure on the French side in Saint-Pierre on our way home from a super weekend in Saint-Pierre. Five stars for the French – one star for Fortune.

My husband, myself and 25 year old son recently travelled the day to Saint Pierre-Miquelon. Before we left l had lots of questions that l had a hard time finding the answer to. We booked ahead as the ferry from Fortune only travels on Wednesday where you can actually go and come back the same day. We had our vehicle which was not a problem paid 11.00 to leave it for the day. Arrived at ferry 815 plenty of time..we actually stayed at a B and B close by. The ferry is newer and staff excellent. You do not have to have a passport photo Government ID works. If you have any motion sickness tendencies plan ahead. I had the seasick bands, ginger gravol etc and my son was still sick, think his big breakfast did not help. Staff are awesome helping people that are ill. They do open the outside area which helps once the boat is out of the harbour but think this would depend on the weather. Lots of places to eat no problem getting into restaurant..a lot of money and places take Canadian money. We did our own walking tour..did a bit of shopping. Smooth trip on the 530pm trip back to Fortune.

Pour garer votre voiture, acheter le ticket de parking au bureau de vente SPM ferries sur la place près de la rue principale (pas de panique, Fortune c'est tout petit, vous trouverez sans peine). Ne pas arriver trop à l'avance. Deux employés en gilet jaune (parlant uniquement anglais) vous attendent près des douanes canadiennes. Sortir les bagages de la voiture et suivre leur van jusqu'au parking à 1 km de là. Ils vous ramènent dans le van jusqu'à l'embarquement. Les ferries sont très propres et modernes, bien stabilisés, et on vend des sandwiches et à boire à bord.

Booking online in advance makes for an effortless voyage from the carpark to the port. The ferry is extremely steady even for those who suffer from motion sickness.

Crossing into France

The web site contains all the necessary information to ensure a smooth booking process. Although passports are not required for Canadian citizens, we brought ours as we wanted a stamp. For Canadian citizens only a photo ID is required such as a drivers’ license. Be advised that the ticket office closes 30 minutes before the ferry’s departure so plan accordingly.

As recommended on the web site, we arrived 90 minutes before the departure, my husband drove up to the departure area where passengers’ luggage is dropped off and followed a staff person to the long term parking lot where he left our rental – he was then driven back to the terminal. You can prepay for parking at the ticket office - $10/day. Cost per couple to cross was $230.00.

Boarding begins about 30 minutes before departure. Large pieces of luggage are stored while passengers board. I found the boat to be very clean and comfortable. The ride to St. Pierre was very smooth, however, our return voyage was a different story. Once we arrived in St. Pierre, luggage was off loaded and was waiting for us on the pier, After reclaiming our luggage, we went thru customs – no questions were asked, our passports were examined and stamped, and we exited into France.

The return voyage can best be described as riding a roller coaster in gale force winds. We were due to depart at 7:00 am, however, the departure was cancelled and we were rebooked on the 5:30 pm ferry which left on time. I tend to not travel well so I ensure that I was well prepared taking a few gravol as well as sitting on the top floor. The first half hour was like riding a roller coaster, however, staff assured us that the trip would improve once the ferry changed direction.

I was very thankful when the ferry arrived in Fortune. After docking, our luggage was unloaded and we proceeded thru customs, entering Canada once again.
