Architectural gems and significant sites are discreetly scattered around the suburbs of Paris. For example take Viroflay, overshadowed by its majestic neighbor Versailles and the royal palace. And yet Viroflay has a lot to offer including vestiges of its close association with the royalty and the church from the 16th century till the revolution , as well as other interesting buildings and cultural centers. Most are concentrated in the historic district on the upper level of the left bank of the town. Formerly a royal parish and seigneurie, it’s worth a stopover on an excursion to Versailles to check out some impressive buildings in “the old village” near the Viroflay Rive Gauche train station. Beginning with the imposing Sully Vauban Art Deco private residency built in 1932 consisting of 11 brick buildings adorned inside with mosaic podiums topped with clay jars of flowers. The ground floor of the building looking out on the street was conveniently designed to accomodate shops, businesses and medical services. Three minutes further up at the end of the block is the heart of the village: L’Eglise St Eustache de Viroflay built in the 16th century on the ruins of a 13th century chapel around which the village grew; next to it the former seigneurie now Conservatoire de Musique .Across the street a few yards down on la Place Charles Degaulle is City Hall in the former Grand Chalet of the Duke of Morny, Le Clos St Vigor St Vigor
On the other side of the tracks further down the hill: combining traditional and modern architecture L’Eglise Notre Dame du Chêne on rue Rieussec , and a block away the old post office built in the 1920s on rue des Anciens Combattants. At the bottom of the hill on ave. General Leclerc (D10 running from Paris to Versailles) the Arcades viaduct, and a cultural center: l’Ecu de France art gallery and a public library and mediatech.

I had the pleasure of running with both Alexandre and Morgan on a Paris city running tour in June 2012. I met them at the Trocadero. They were on time and easy to spot in their bright red berets. We toured the bridges and the major sights along the Seine with Alexandre providing great historical commentary about the history of Paris and France. It was a good mix of history, fun facts and conversation as we meandered through the streets of Paris.
I would highly recommend the experience. Next time I hope Alexandre does a running tour of Versailles!!
