Great footpaths which are scattered throughout the park, skateboarding rink, children’s play area, great cafe. Beautiful lakes full of wildlife and ample parking. Great open-air space for concerts, etc.

Terrible park. Spent a few hours here today and the park is full of dog waste. Also loads of dogs who are uncontrolled off the lead and running everywhere. I have five dogs so am a dog lover but the people here seem to think that dogs can be left or foul and roam at their leisure.

On starting to walk on the footpath from the carpark the visitor can expect to walk in a zig zag style to avoid the many piles of dogs excrement that are deposited there. After walking some distance we arrived at a pond which was pleasant with swans and other foul. Walking further we came across benches so we thought we would sit for a while. Unfortunately we could not do this as the only two vacant benches were festooned with rotting flowers and a wreath preventing us from sitting. I remind those ignorant idiots that this is a public park and not a cemetery. These should be removed and notices put up to forbid this disgusting, morbid practice of leaving floral tributes to the dead. Parks are for the living. Cemeteries are for the dead. Seeing this smelly detritus plus the stink of dog faeces ruined our vist.

Great day out for old and young plenty of good walking paths great ponds and lakes with plenty wild life good play area to suit all ages clean and safe only let down no cafe open

Unacceptable levels of noise from here weekend after weekend after weekend due to their poorly managed events. My friends in Seaton heard it their too. I can here it inside my home and I'm literally miles away. Surely they have a responsibility to monitor the decibels and consider the residents of the city.

Good amount of walks to choose from, large car park and plenty of open space which was being used mainly for picnicking at the time of our trip. Ice cream van takes card too which is a bonus (99’s aren’t 99p anymore folks). Park looked overall in good nick with lots of different terrains and bits to look at as you were walking through, 4/5 would come again although nothing enticing me back.. if that makes sense

Family of 4 with 2 daughters age 13 and 10.
Visited after a walk up Penshaw Monument. We used the overflow parking (free) in the field although there are several on site car parks tho they are a bit small.
We had a lovely saunter round on a warm day visiting as many of the sculptures as we could find and just enjoying the general park.
We found it it well kept, clean and free of dog mess.
We didn't use the cafe as we had brought a picnic but we did use the toilets which are in dire need of updating. They are not the cleanest, broken locks on doors and the toilet roll holders are broken. I am surprised of how few stalls their were too for such a busy park too, only two in the ladies.
Swings are fenced in and the kids loved them, they are next door to the cafe. 2 ice cream vans on site when we were there, one by the lake and one near the cafe.

Beautiful parkland and lake, ideal for walking, especially with dogs. Plenty of paths and trails and very nice scenery. The lake has lots of wild birds, ducks, geese and swans. Decent car parking and nice little cafe and toilets

This park could potentially be a really pleasant area to walk but it's not. I read some reviews and thought perhaps people are being a bit over the top. However, I visited the park and witnessed it first hand; it's true. It is actually covered everywhere in dog waste, everywhere you go in the park. It's a huge park as well! In some parts of the park, every square metre of grass is endowed with a quantity of dog waste. There are dog waste bins provided everywhere so there doesn't seem to be any logical reason for it. The bins are empty and people don't use them. It is the people of Sunderland to blame and they should be ashamed of themselves. There is clearly no civic pride whatsoever among them. If that's the way they want to live the that's fine, I'll go somewhere else. This park is disgusting and it's not safe for children to play because most areas of path and grass is covered in dog waste. The place is covered in litter. There is no enforcement either. It's a shame that people should treat such a nice place in this way. This is why Sunderland can't have nice things.

Wild camping is illegal in England and Wales. You must camp at an official camp site and this is a country park. So you cannot camp at Herrington Park legally.

There are 2 car parks, 1 just as you enter the park on your right, near the toilets and play park, the other just follow the road down bearing left on a bend and there's a car park opposite the lake. great to park a the latter for lovely walks around the country park.

I don’t believe it shuts as such, the only thing that may not be open is the little cafe and toilets but I believe the top car park isn’t gated and neither are the footpaths.
