Shree Durga Devi Temple, Guhagar.
The temple is located in an area surrounded by lush green coconut plantations and farmlands. The location is not only very scenic but also calm, quiet, and, serene.
There are four information boards installed in this temple. The first board mentions that this is a “shakti Peeth” of Kokan and gives a brief history of the temple. The other two boards describe the beauty, attire, and ornaments worn by the Goddess. The goddess is also called “ Durga Vyadeshwari”
In short, these two boards are eulogising the beauty and characteristics of the Goddess.
The fourth board informs about a festival Called “Dhulvad” which starts before the festival of Holi and concludes on the day Holi is celebrated. I feel the Dhulvad festival is solely limited to Guhagar and the association of the Goddess due to ancient and well-established traditions having great significance to the locals and populace from surrounding areas.
Being Shakti Peeth this is an ancient temple and the goddess has resided here since time immemorial.
As per the legend, as given in the first information board, at one time when the very existence of Guhagar was threatened by attacking pirates and marauders Goddess Durga appeared in the form of Mahishasur Mardini. She fought all the attackers with various weapons like Ankush, Trident, battle axe, and even live snakes. After a fierce battle, the attackers were vanquished and Guhagar was saved. The goddess appeared in the dream of Pujari and told him that in the heat of the battle, one pearl from her nose ring was lost near the seashore. It is on a ruyee (cotton) leaf. He pujari was told to find it and bring it back to the temple. After a long search by the people of Guhagar, the pearl was found and brought back. The pearl forms part of the ornaments of the Goddess. Every year during the festival of Shardiya Navratra Festival (शारदीय नवरात्रोत्सवात ) This pearl along with a very valuable carpet is displayed for the public viewing.
As given in another board, the unique thing about this goddess is that in the mornings, her idol appears to look like a young, beautiful, loving, and benevolent newly married woman. In the afternoon the goddess arrears like a knowledgeable, understanding, and statuesque mature woman. In The evening she turns into a Kumarika (An unmarried young girl), Playful, lovable and a bit naughty.
Around 1560 – 1580, the temple which was by the roadside was being desecrated by thugs and looters and was moved away from the road.
In 1715 on the motivation of the Goddess, Vaijnath Datar built this temple
As is the case of Vyadeshwar Temple, Shri Durga Temple is also built in Panchatayan style. Lord Ganesh, Ambika Devi, God Visnu, and Lord Shive are known as “Panchatayan”.
Here Shri Durga temple is in the centre and the temples of God Vishnu, Lord Shiv, Ganesh, and Surya are in four corners.
The Temple has been renovated in the recent past.
Freshly terracotta-painted temple buildings, with plain and simple architectural lines were looking nice and appealing. The temple premise was spotlessly clean. The assembly area for devotees was covered to give protection from the Sun and the rain. An information board was nicely maintained and gave detailed and useful information about the origins of the temple.
The main temple building consists of Sabha Graha and Garbha Graha. Ornamentations of the door to garbha graha were done very tastefully and looked beautiful.
Main Sabha Graha has a gallery built all along the three walls. Support and the gallery are all built and supported by beautifully carved and engraved teak wood columns. Looks very beautiful. There is a nice chandelier hanging from the roof.
There is a feel and ambience of sacredness in the temple and temple premises. The calm and serene atmosphere certainly calms your nerves and you feel peaceful.

Durga Devi mandir is oldest temple , though renovated in recent times, in Guhagar. For many families Durga devi is their Kulaswamini or Kuladaivat. The temple trustees, Khare family has developed that complex in a very nice way. It was a divine experience.
