England past, living history.
ส.ค. ค.ศ. 2021 • ครอบครัว
Having read about the limited Hall opening (on the website) we visited on a Friday. Arrived and presented a voucher (for what should have been 241 entry) but received free entry, so bonus!

The first volunteer who directed us was very helpful, the next one explaining about the route around the hall and closed rooms, less interested in us compared to their speel provided to guests before us and those they were telling as we exited.

The hall it's self was a great example of England's society past, it brings the past to life and was fun and modern relating to Downton Abbey and Bridgetown (appealing to a newer audience, it's just a shame that more rooms were not open. Those volunteers /staff in the rooms were very happy to impart knowledge of the room and answer questions from our seven year old son.

The grounds and surrounding walks across the estate was great.

Hall visit lasted 30-40mins (due to limited access) and grounds and walk allowed us to visit for neay 3 hours.

Without the voucher we probably wouldn't have visited and my son wouldn't have been excited by his experience.

Like a past post mentions, and our experience of The NT in Dover during the summer, they are becoming exclusive sites and not accessible enough to the regular family or future audiences.

All said a lovely time and experience.

Exploiting Covid
ส.ค. ค.ศ. 2021
So we'd travelled to the wonderful Kedleston Hall for the day to make use of our membership. Arriving at the site we had our passes scanned and were not informed that both the restaurant and house were closed. The Church was also closed but this is third party ran I believe.

Therefore you can imagine our disappointment when we only had a catering trailer and parkland.

Now don't get me wrong the grounds of Kedleston are beautiful and because of it's design you can find a quiet spot regardless of how busy it is. However it was incredibly annoying not to be told at the pay barrier. The family behind us were non members and paid to enter and they too were not told. It is a very expensive visit when there's very little open.

Furthermore the National Trust will one day have its bubble burst when its membership (of which I am) realise that we are being exploited. To be charged £18+ for 4 waters, 1 can of Tango and 1 sausage roll is outrageous. They seriously need to sack their buyers if they can't negotiate better rates or stop being so greedy. The National Trust protest that they are an all inclusive organisation but quite literally they are catering for the rich.

It is worth reiterating though that the estate is beautiful and as a member we didn't lose out financially by the hall being closed and it was a lovely day, but such a jewel in the National portfolio being closed was not good.

Lovely.

This property has some lovely parkland to walk, with a great opportunity to spot Heron along the lake.

The house itself is partly lived in still by the descendants. The part of the house that guests can view is grand in many ways, however we were told that rooms were still closed on our visit so it didn’t take long to get in and out.

One member of staff who was in the library that day deserves to be mentioned for his knowledge.

The cafe was lovely and the man in the gift shop friendly and knowledgeable.

A bit disappointed...
ก.ค. ค.ศ. 2021 • คู่รัก
I must say that I visited various "halls" and is exactly because of that that I am only giving 3 stars (if I could 2.5 stars) to Kedleston.

The interior design of the hall is beautiful no doubts, but some rooms were still with white covers and they say that those rooms are still "sleeping" due to covid while others rooms are already "awake". I guess if you open the hall, open it all (in my view). The hall is big but you can only see just a few rooms so I find it quite expensive for what it is.
The gardens are also small and nothing special.
The place does have some walks which I did not do so I cannot comment on them.

Overall a bit disappointed with Kedleston.

If you have seen the house try the long trail .
ก.ค. ค.ศ. 2021
Having enjoyed the house on a previous visit we decided to take the Long walk beside the lake and back through tne woods.
Well worth while.

My wife was shocked to find the NT shop had no books on the fascinating Curzon family. Both the former Viceroy of India and his numerous daughters have inspired many books but the family appears to have been airbrushed out, Political correctness by the NT?

Lots of picnic tables and some shady parking for those with dogs.

Nice grounds, (slight) shame about the house
มิ.ย. ค.ศ. 2021
The house is immense, but it didn't really tell its story. It felt like a series of emptyish rooms each studded with assorted ornaments and adornments without any real narrative. So I left the house, my thirst for historical tale and knowledge unquenched and didn't feel I'd learnt very much about the interiors of both the house and the residents who graced it over the centuries.
Some restrictions were still in place at the time and I dare say they played a part in my lack of connectivity, but whilst it is a good property, it didn't move me and I left slightly underwhelmed.

The grounds, meanwhile, are voluminous and sprawl over their bit of Derbyshire with much greenery and foliage and with many acres to explore, or to kick back in and relax and, if that is your desire, to enjoy the view from within, over a leisurely picnic.

Volunteer of the month...

We are regular visitors to Kedleston Hall. The place has some Lovely woodland walks and fantastic grounds to sit and picnic in. The house it’s self is stunning inside and out.
However this review is for one of there volunteers.
Margaret who works in the cafe couldn’t of been more wonderful . There was a mix up with our drinks order and Margaret was so obliging to resolve the situation. She has a real warmth to her and an asset to the place. Thank you Margaret.

30,000,000 restoration.

This house and gardens are tip top of the ostentatious hit list. The owner attempting to outshine Chatsworth with huge painted ceilings and roman style grandeur.
Every room is fit for royalty although sadly some where off limits at the time. Thoroughly worth a visit, take your time and see it all it's well worth it.
The circular walk around the property reveals great countryside and views of the house. Stunning.

Return visit before final lockdown easing
ก.ค. ค.ศ. 2021
Not been for three years so went back for a day out.
No pre-booking was required and when we got there at midday indicated we should look in the gardens first as there was a queue for the hall.
After a pleasant walk around the wild flower garden we joined a short queue to be seated in the restaurant.
Provided with a menu and table number then had to queue for 20 mins to place our order. Could not see any of the cakes and scones so had to order blindly and hope they were OK.
Scones were tasty but a bit dry without having jam and cream. Shortbread and flapjack were both very good.
After food there was no queue for the hall. One way system in operation with some areas lacking displays as it was still wrapped up.
Beautiful architecture and wallcoverings in most rooms and guides quite helpful. Appeared to get round quite quickly and felt we had missed out a lot of the house that had previously been open - this was confirmed by looking at earlier photos.
Then went for a stroll down to the bridge, lake and fishing pavilion. When you were not walking on the roadway the grass was riddled with sheep and duck droppings and due to the heat some areas were very smelly. Thus not as pleasant as expected.

Worth making the effort to visit
มิ.ย. ค.ศ. 2021
Designed by the architect Robert Adam, Kedleston Hall was commissioned in the 1750s by a Nathaniel Curzon, who could trace that his family had resided in Kedleston since the 12th century. It was inherited by George Nathaniel Curzon, who was Viceroy of India from 1899 to 1905. Kedleston Hall was designed purely for entertaining (it does not have any bedrooms) and, as such, it is lavish to the extreme with the rooms groaning with paintings, sculptures, furniture and souvenirs and gifts ffrom when Lord Curzon was Viceroy. Outside there are formal gardens and expansive grounds, with both long and short walks. There ios also a restaurant, which is Covid safe, in some impressive surroundings. Entrance is by pre-bookable ticket and, once inside the building, a one way path has to be followed. It is well worth making the effort to visit this unusual and, in its own way, beautiful building.
