This place was a bit off the beaten path, but worth the drive. You'll see the actual house Twain was born in, plus a small museum that contains a lot of info about Twain. And it's free!

This museum and site, about a 45 minute drive from Hannibal, does not disappoint! The museum is unique in that the actual cabin that Samuel Clemens was born in was moved to this site and the museum was constructed to house the cabin so that it is preserved and protected from the elements.
Although you cannot enter the cabin, there are open doors and windows to provide ample views of the two rooms, which are decorated with authentic period furnishings.
The museum is first rate and contains many exhibits about Twain and includes many items from his adulthood home as well as his personal carriage.
If you're a fan of Mark Twain, this is a must see!

We stopped at the museum. It's free & we wandered around. Nice exhibits. A small gift area.
There's a short trail to a nice lookout. There's a picnic table there, so you can have a fantastic view as you eat.
There's also a fishing pond that's very peaceful.
Hang a right as you leave to the small town of Florida. They have a log cabin & some information boards about Mark Twain's birthplace.

A hidden gem. A beautiful museum with Mark Twain’s home where he was born right inside the building. Very insightful of the beginnings of Samuel Clemons and who and how he becomes the famous author.

This was a very nice way to learn about Mark Twain. I definitely recommend it to anyone who is visiting the area.

To access this site, due to Covid-19, pre-registration is required by calling (573) 565-3440 within 24 hours of going. There is a limit on attendees at each time. Currently there are only accessible times at 10 am and 1 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. That said, it is well-worth going. One sees the cabin in which Samuel Clemens was born, a large number of artifacts including original manuscripts, and a 20-minute movie.

This is about a thirty minute drive from Hannibal. We enjoyed learning more about the life of Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens)). The quality is similar to the Mark Twain boyhood museum in Hannibal. They show a film about the highlights of his life. However, there is more about his wife, his children, and his furniture from his Connecticut home. Of course, there is the actual birthplace which was moved here from the town of Florida not far away. I would recommend listening to a Mark Twain story before you arrive. It’s free but you need reservations to get in (because of COVID-19).

.. on our way elsewhere and saw this on the map and decided to detour. Glad we did.
Driving through the park was scenic (even in January!) but Mark Twain's birthplace was our focus. It's not a huge museum, but it's packed with knowledge and information. Seeing his home was impressive...that such a great and humble man came from such meager beginnings. But the experiences he had with his friends and family were what shaped him into the writer he came to be. It was worth getting off the beaten path for a short while.

My family spent a few days in Hannibal seeing the sights and sounds of all things Mark Twain related. We also visited this state historic site, as we were camping in Mark Twain State Park. Admission is free.
I really appreciated how this site captured a side of Mark Twain I didn't see as much in Hannibal. The Hannibal locations are more touristy and focus more on the writing of Twain, which is probably the biggest reason most people visit. While that's fine -- and while some of the exhibits in Hannibal are good -- I really appreciated the focus this site has on Twain as the man. The film shown here gets into some of the complexities of Twain's life, including his relationship to the North and South during the Civil War and the emotional highs and lows of his family, including his children. There is a scholarly vibe to the exhibits here that is refreshing.
It's not large, so you may not spend more than 1-2 hours here at most, but it's a great little addition to any trip involving Mark Twain. It's also a good place for kids; my grade-school daughters both liked the film and the physical exhibits. Recommended.

Very educational museum on the life of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain). This museum is on the banks of Mark Twain Lake (nice overlook of the lake near the parking lot). This accessible facility houses the small cabin that Samuel Clemens was born in, doing a great job of preserving it. There are many displays and an informative movie on the life of Mark Twain. This site is free to the public.

Is the museum "hike-able" from the campground? We will be in a truck camper and don't want to have to break camp if it's a good distance.

You would need to walk along the shoulder of Route 107, a two laned road with shoulders that has a 55 mph speed limit, and includes a bridge over an arm of Mark Twain Lake. I would estimate the portion of 107 would be three miles. The portion of road is mostly flat and is typically NOT a high volume traffic area. I suggest looking on Google Earth to get a better idea.
