This is a lovely state park! Visit Buzzards Roost for a high view of the lake.
There's trails & picnic areas. A swimming beach if the weather's right. Boating is very big here as well.
We camped at Puma campground. Very nice sites, some have some vegetation between them. There's nice shade. This is a well established campground. The bathrooms were clean & nice. Showers were great.
There's no one at the gatehouse, so the camp host drives around in her golf cart to check you in.

During the week of September 20th, my husband and I camped at Mark Twain State Park. It far surpassed our already high expectations. During the week, it was less than half full. Both the camp sites and restrooms / showers were spotless and in good repair. There were lots of water faucets around the campground. Each camp area had its own shower house. We liked the showers in the Puma campground the best. Each shower was in its own private room. The showers are free and have excellent water pressure and all the hot water you could want. The restrooms all had flush toilets and nice mirrors instead of the shiny metal type so many state parks have these days that are useless.
Over the past 2 years, we have stayed in state and national parks in 15 states. Mark Twain State Park is our favorite. It had the cleanest facilities, excellent hiking with well-marked trails [with the exception of part of the red trail - the Post Oak Trail], good panoramic views of lake on trails, lots of wildlife, quiet, spacious wooded sites, and only costs $13 / night for a basic campsite and $23 / night for a site with electric. Amazing place. No coin operated showers, no entry fees, or other hidden fees which drastically drive up the cost. We did not have to make a reservation and had the pick of top sites. On our wilderness hikes we saw: deer, white pelicans, vultures, flocks of wild turkey, sea gulls, blue herons, egrets, assorted ducks, and lots of other shore birds. Bring your binoculars. At night we even heard a pair of screech owls .More wildlife than we have seen [or heard] anywhere else.
There were a few negatives among the large number of pluses. The fishing from shore was difficult due to the steep descent down to the water’s edge. There were large amounts of stones one had to walk over. Not recommended for young kids or senior citizens. (My husband and I each fell on the rocks once with him ending up knee deep in the lake!) Having a small boat to launch would make the fishing easier. The Park has 2 boat launches and fish cleaning stations, but nothing for anglers without a boat. Missouri should invest in 2 floating docks so travelers without boats can easily fish as well. The second negative was there were few garbage cans. None at the campsites had a trash can, which we found to be unusual. There were 2 large dumpsters at the campground entrance and 1 can in each restroom with the showers but these were not very convenient. It would be best to raise the camping fee a few dollars to cover more trash cans.
Overall, this state park is a real jewel! Far better and less expensive than most parks in other states. Missouri should consider charging non-residents a little more to finance some improvements like more trash cans and floating docks to fish from. Most other states already charge nonresidents a little more, especially in the New England states. $5 / night more would cover some improvements which would benefit everyone. We will definitely go back to this 5 star park. Best bargain in the country!

The Mark Twain Lake is huge, but signage is poor. We were told we could go swimming, but never found where.

The park is beautiful and very clean . The swim beach was very nice no rocks just sand. But make sure you have shoes and pack light because the parking lot is a good distance away from the lake and you have to walk though the sand no path way. The water was clear and warm and we all enjoyed it.

We had just moved to Missouri and were out driving around and found the state park. We found this picnic area that was beautiful. We are going back again!!!!!

This was our first time to this park and it was a very nice and quiet visit. Park hosts were amazing, all the other state parks we have been to cannot compare to the hosts here. We were able to see some wildlife and our campsite had somewhat of a water view. Bathrooms could use some work, and weren't to clean but the nice hot showers made up for that. I was also glad that there was no highway noise, we've experienced this at most of the state parks we've camped at but not that one. With the historic site being right up the road there was something to go and see if you wanted to get away from the campsite for a bit. All in all it was a nice trip.

Mark Twain State Park is a great place for a quiet camping trip. The hiking is very good. Water sports are probably good when the lake is full. We saw lots of people fishing even though the lake was more than 10' below the normal fill level.

This park is very well kept, beautiful in every aspect. It has a wide variety of wildlife, turkey, eagles, deer and bobcat to name a few. Has a couple marinas with one we visited having a restaurant, store and ice cream on the water. A great park with camping and cabins wonderful for a weekend to a week!

Are there any lake views from campsites? Also is it walking distance to beach from campgrounds?

Puma campground had some sites with lake views but they were mostly blocked by trees... But you could still see a lake was close by... My 15 yr old son would walk to the lake but we were at a handicapped sure and never walked that far personally. But I'm pretty sure you could walk over there without too much problem from the Puma campgrounds. The other ones are further from the lake.
We typically go to table Rock Lake or Bull Shoals lake, can someone tell me if the mark twain water is as clear? We like being able to see our feet and not have the water being so murky.
