It has to be open since it’s a public rail but whether the train stops there in winter I am not certain. You could still enjoy it out of the window. The destination Flam is wonderful I expect even in winter.

Took us 2:15 to walk from the port, up to the waterfall with a 45min stop at the top and walk back down. 20 mins each way to the start of the trail from Flam. 20-40 walking up depending on fitness and confidence.

Brekkefossen is easy to get toto... The head of the trail is less than 30 minutes from the train and the walk is very scenic. You walk along a river, past cows, and see grass roof tops. However the hoke to the top is a bit rough but I'm completely out of shape. We didn't have a lot of time, we only stayed at the top for about 15 minutes but there are plenty of grassy areas. Why not run in the grocery before your hike and pack a small picnic and really enjoy your view when you get to the top? This hike was really one of the many highlights of our trip!

Hi! I also started at around 7.45 and it was May. Not so clear for me, before 9 or so, but in July I think you might be lucky!

In Norway it should be quite light at that time. We found the best views were when the skies clear and the sun was out so I'd check the forecast. As you can see from my review the way was blocked off when we went there at the beginning of May, so I would check that the construction work has finished before you go.

I agree you can pretty much walk all of flam village. We really enjoyed the little train that takes you round all the village sites on a quick tour from the pier past the waterfall, church and school. It is called rallartoget and you can find it on trip advisor. The flam railway is the best attraction though, but it does get booked up fast.
