This is the best walk I have ever done. It is not so much a walk through space as through time. You start at Myrdal (elev. 866m) and fall to sea level at the ridiculously picturesque Flam village on the Fjord. If like us you go in May and are lucky enough to have good weather you will, through the 13 mile descent, pass through almost 6 months of seasons along the way. We started in 2 feet of snow at Myrdal but as the initial descent is quite fast, were soon seeing snowdrops and then daffodils, around mile nine out came the tulips and when we arrived in Flam all the trees were in blossom. And as the path twists and turns there are views that would justify any walk around each turn. Plus waterfalls EVERYWHERE (Only go in spring before the snow melts, after that, no waterfalls!) This is a bucket list walk. Plan carefully and pray for a fine day and it is unequalled. Plus a top ten global railway experience thrown in!

Hiking around Flam is good fun. While there are not too many flat parts around the mountains and fjords, exploring some of the hills will yield great views. The good thing is that you don’t have to venture too far for great views. Brekkefossen is one example of a hike that would be no more than a three hour round trip. Hiking maps are available in most hotels and in the visitor centre. Remember to let someone know where you are going and when you expect to be back. Preferably hike with someone.

The walk from Flam to Brekkyfjossen Falls starts as a pleasant stroll along a country road, and you get glimpses of the falls as you approach. Once you turn off the road onto a narrow track through farmland the grade becomes steeper, the track then turns to stone steps, after the steps it becomes an even steeper, and somewhat slippery gravel track. The view at the top, of the waterfall and valley below makes it worth the effort.
I would not recommend this walk for someone who is not fit, or who has trouble with their knees , hope or feet. Also wear some kind of sensible footwear. A bit of hard work...but certainly worthwhile. It took us just over 2 hours, return.

Flam è il fiordo più lungo della Norvegia , ammirare i paesaggi durante la navigazione è davvero spettacolare, ogni angolo di roccia è diverso!!!
si giunge alla fine in questo piccolo villaggio su un molo, dove a destra c'è una stazione di una vecchia ferrovia ancora in uso per una gita davvero spettacolare per ammirare dei paesaggi e delle cascate uniche.
noi abbiamo preferito percorrere la The Snow Road to Laerdal, strada aperta solo in estate ad alta quota... con questo viaggio davvero unico siamo salito su strade ripidissime, e molto strette dove solo l'abilità di autisti come loro possono passare.
anche se con un pò di paura devo dire, ci siamo lasciati trasportare ma è stato tutto davvero unico!!!
siamo passati in un tunnel lunghissimo dove sono stati crreati degli spazi con luci differenti per non distogliere l'attenzione dell'autista.
ci siamo arrampicati lungo stradine con dirupi e stretissime per poter ammirare cascate in mezzo al nulla davvero sensazionali.
la strada delle nevi è qualcosa che toglie il fiato.. percorrerla in questi lunghi km senza nulla con neve da entrambe le parti fa viaggiare di fantasia e ti rimette in pace con il mondo..
se anche voi passata da queste parti percorretela e ammirerete qualcosa che davvero non dimenticherete.

Had a lovely walk to the main waterfall in Flåm. Was very steep at times so might be a bit tricky for someone who struggles to walk but amazing views at the top definitely worth it!

Når man kommer litt opp i høyden over Flåm får man en utsøkt utsikt på fine dager. Der er lange og korte ruter å velge mellom. Ta taxi frem til der stien begynner.

Da jeg gikk denne turen for noen år siden, benyttet vi oss av Turisthyttene til overnatting. Vi brukte to overnattinger på turen fra Finse til Flåm. Husk ekstra tøy skift, og gode fjell sko. Været kan raskt endre seg uten varsel.
Uansett blir det en uforglemmelig opplevelse.

An alternative activity in Flåm, most specially for people with limited time, like cruise ships passengers.
The highlight is located not far from the cruise terminal. To get up to the View Point, right close to the Brekkefjossen Waterfall, it’ll take about 50mins, depending on your walking phase. The way up is not that difficult, partially with stairs. Better wear rubber shoes or trekking shoes to protect yourself from slipping. Before doing the trek, check the weather beforehand. The breathtaking view doesn’t cost anything..

We will be travelling in Jun period from Steinsdalsfossen to Flam. By the time we reach estimate to be around 11am to noon time. Plan to go for Flam Valley hike. Need to know how frequent ti the train from Flam to Myrdal.

Pretty frequent - several an hour I think but you need to book the tickets ahead and tell the conductor if you get off before the end at one of the smaller stations.

Thinking of taking the Flam train to Vatnahalsen, then hiking down 6-7 miles to catch another train to the cruise ship. This is with Celebrity. We are hesitant as they say it is strenuous. We are 60 and 62 and in generally good shape. Wondering if anyone has done this excursion and has any thoughts on exactly how strenuous the hike is. Thanks!

We took the Flam railway up in July and got off about two thirds of the way up. You need to let the conductor know you are getting off and they have you to sit in particular carriage. We hiked down about 13km - there is gravel road parallel to the railway most of the way and it is pretty easy walking. We are in our 60s and walk a lot and thought it was a good walk. You see a lot more walking than sitting in the train. You just need the time to do it - we would have done the whole trip (about 20kms) but we did not have enough time.

How long did the 11km hike back to Flam take? I'm trying to time myself because we are catching the afternoon boat to Balestrand. Also, was the train easily accessible from the hotel? Thanks!

My daughter and I are avid hikers and will be visiting Norway for 8 days for the first time in July. We're planning to stay in the Flam area to hike in the Aurlandsdalen valley and Naeroyfjord -- with a long day-trip to Trolltungen (would this work, or is it too long a day?). Do you think this will give us a good hikers perspective of Norway, or is there something we should add (e.g., we could spend 6 days in the Flam area and then 2 days in a different area -- we're planning to rent a car)?

Your hike in Flam sounds fabulous! I was wondering how you purchased your ticket on the train when you were half way down? Was it easy to find a train station? My hope is to hike the whole way down but my husband has cranky knees that may not allow that. I would love the option to walk half way and then hop on the train. When I try to purchase a round trip ticket the website only allows me to buy a return ticket from Mydral. Would I buy 2 one way tickets or do they honor tickets with different times at differnet stations? Thanks for your help!

Hi! It was a lovely bike ride down! Walking will take a bit longer, so remember that. Where are you wanting to start your hike from, Mydral? I biked all the way down to Flam and then stayed overnight in Flam. But you should be able to get a train back from Flam. Go to the nsb website to get your train tickets in advance or you can get your tickets from the Flam station. I'm not sure if they honor different times. It's best to go ahead and get your tickets in advance though because they can sell out. Hope I was able to answer some of your questions.

Hi! Saw your post about biking in the Flam valley, Norway. In a couple of weeks, my sister and I are doing the Sognefjord in a Nutshell RT Route from Bergen, first via boat and then planning to stay in either Flam or Aurland (on the fence on where) for one night, before returning by train to Bergen.
Is this easy to do, as in renting bikes up at Myrdal? and where do you drop them off down in Flam when you're done?
Can you use bikes in the area just in general?? say if we wanted to explore in Aurland and Flam valley further?

Hi Jennifer,
Renting the bike in Myrdal is easy but be sure to call in advance to reserve one; we went in early June and they ran out on the first afternoon we got there.
You have the bike for pretty much the whole day and yes you're supposed to return it in Flam. Not sure about taking the bike to Aurland as you will have to bring it on the ferry with you, doesn't seem like it would be a problem though since we and other people had luggage to bring on board.

We are fit and active walkers, age 70, who have no difficulty on steep inclines. We've already done the railway in the past so are looking for something interesting to do while docked in Flam for a day. Any recommendations, please, and can you get walking maps at the tourist office?
