Just wow. What a fantastic experience. This is a show cave, ie it’s a cave system open to tourists, needing no special training or equipment, you just roll on up, pay the admission charge and follow your guide.
The caves are underneath Mount Croce, just a short distance outside Gallicano in the Garfagnana region. Although it isn’t far from civilisation, the road leading to the visitors centre is narrow, twisting and in places, somewhat precarious so the actual journey there can take some time.
Advice for drivers: be very careful on the tighter bends and the narrower sections, it’s very easy to come face to face with another vehicle and there is very little room for manoeuvre!!
At the visitors centre, along with a gift shop and refreshment facilities, there are toilets and a reasonable amount of car parking. The car park is a pay and display, but quite cheap: €3 gets you 4 hours parking.
Charges apply all day including holidays, but the ticket machine instructions are in multiple languages and clear enough to understand.
The visitors centre has a quirky ticket office, in that the tills are all in one place but you have to pay for different items on different sides of the central kiosk, presumably to avoid queues.
There are three itineraries to choose from; a 1, 2 or 3 hour tour of the caves. We chose the 2 hour, at a cost of €14 per person, but in hindsight, we wish we’d opted for the three hour tour because we enjoyed it so much.
The tours leave at varying times of the day, so it’s worth checking beforehand to plan your arrival to avoid missing the start of a tour and having to wait. If you do end up waiting, there’s a great little ristorante across the car park where you can get a bite to eat and a drink while you kill time.
The caves are at a pretty much constant 10deg C so many people take jumpers or light coats with them, however I did the entire tour in shorts and t-shirt and found it pleasantly cool after the heat of the day outside.
Our guide was Roberta, an English speaking Italian who had so much knowledge and information about the geology, history and significant events surrounding the caves.
The pattern of the tour is move a short distance, stop to look at points of interest, take some photos, move on a bit, stop again. Frequently Roberta would describe to us the next section so that we knew what to look out for, and any special instructions relating to the ecological impact we might have on some surprisingly fragile areas inside the caves.
It’s important that you abide by the rules set by the guides to protect structures and formations that are, after all, millions of years old.
Some of these rules include: no touching the formations: either due to fragility or to prevent wear and damage caused by even the oils in your skin. Bags and rucksacks are not permitted in the caves and you will understand in some sections how easily they would become cumbersome and potentially damaging.
Even big cameras are discouraged, but a decent smart phone will take perfect pictures. Please don’t try to be the exception; follow the rules!
Once inside the entire route follows a clear path made from concrete, which is wet. However, this is apparently a very expensive mix of concrete which is non slip and a decent pair of trainers are totally suitable for the tour.
There are some areas where the cave is either narrow, low roofed, or both! The lowest section was 1m20 high and at 1m96 tall, I probably found this the most awkward section to pass through as I was bent double, but none of the restricted sections are very long, and you pass through in moments.
The pace of the tour is gentle, you don’t need to be super fit, there are lots of stops to catch up, take photos and listen to the guides. At no point does it feel rushed. There is always an echo, so the guides speak without shouting, and while they are easy to hear, we found that some of the group of 25 or so who were on our tour were stood at the back talking quite loudly amongst themselves, including some young children who were clearly bored and fractious. This detracted a little from the tour, because it made it hard to hear the guide in places. It does make you wonder why they bothered coming on the tour, but fortunately they were only on the 1 hour route and were led back by another guide leaving us to enjoy the 2nd hour in peace.
So, if you do go on the tour, keep quiet; it’s only fair to other people!
There are a lot of steep steps twisting and turning down through the cave, mostly with hand rails but in places without, so watch your footing. The 2 hour tour returns via a “shortcut”, so some of the steeper sections are only done going down. In all you descend about 80m and go about 200m into the mountain, but you see some amazing rock and calciferous formations, subterranean streams, stalactites, geological faults and fissures. It is just a stunning place to visit, and two hours passes very quickly.
I could spend all day in the caves, there is so much to see and it is an amazing experience. I cannot recommend it highly enough; if you’re in this region of Italy, make a point of visiting. You won’t be disappointed.

Astonishing, spectacular, beautiful and well worth visiting. The journey up to it is exciting enough, with narrow roads, overhanging rocks, tight bends and impressive scenery as you go up the gorge. The one-hour guided tour takes you deep into the mountain. The extraordinary limestone formations have been beautifully lit. Our guide was very knowledgeable and is bilingual in English, having been brought up in Scotland in a family that had emigrated from this area.

Will the visit be OK for someone claustrophobic or is it all small rooms and low/sinuous passageways? Thank you very much

Ciao Natti. Buona
visita 👍

When we arrived there was a camper in the car park, but I would recommend going up first thing in the morning and spending the day there as the last 15k is really only for small cars. We were in a rang rover and had some tight experiences

Fa freddo in grotta?
