Het Waterloopbos. Je loopt langs deel vergane glorie uit de tijd dat hier waterconstructies werden nagebouwd en getest. Gelegen in een prachtig bos nabij het altijd gezellige Marknesse. Genoten van vegantaart in het Proeflab. Door het bos lopen twee betonpaden voor rolstoelers en mensen die minderhandig ter been zijn.

A sunny afternoon is always helpful this time of year. It is nature but also it is science history. It is the place where engineers did the research on important waterworks. The Dutch water management had its outdoor location here and built on scale the proposed reconstructions. With machines they imitated the force of nature on the coasts, in the rivers, in the harbors. It is a pleasure to hear the guide explain how they did it. The lab has been constructed just after the Second World War with a lack of resources, but lucky plenty ideas.
Nature found its way and is wonderful. At the same time they are now busy to reconstruct the old installations.

Nog nooit van gehoord: het Waterloopbos. Maar wat een leuke en ook mooie ervaring! Middenin in een prachtig bos liggen allerlei water-schaalmodellen (nog steeds heel groot) van o.a. havens en waterwerken. Hier werd vanaf de jaren '50 met o.a. golfmachines uitgeprobeerd, welke effecten water op bepaalde constructies zou hebben. Nu niet meer in gebruik en deels door de natuur overgenomen:prachtig!

The Netherlands are well known for their expertise in water management and Waterloopbos is the site of a former laboratory where large scale testing of flood defences and dams was carried out, for both domestice and international clients. Although the laboratory has long since gone, the models remain and a forest has evolved among them.
There is plenty of parking and a cafe (although we didn't try it) and 3 well marked, self guided walks of varying lengths. Information boards describe the models in Dutch and German, with a brief summary in English.
We visited on a hot day and it was lovely and cool among the trees, a very tranquil walk. Fascinating.

Self guided trails around woodland. This area was used for research into waterways and there was a lot of interesting detail about projects throughout the walk. Free parking and a lovely cafe.

Super leuk bos, met heel veel oude test-water werken waardoor de omgeving heel waterrijk en ook divers is. In de herfst een top locatie voor paddenstoelen liefhebbers. Door de weeks is de drukte te overzien, geen idee hoe dat in het weekend is
verschillende uitgestippelde wandel routes variërend van 3 tot 8 km. Mogelijkheid om verhard te lopen (of met kinderwagen/rolstoel) of door het bos te struinen.

Prachtig bos met de restanten van waterloopkundige modellen en laboratoria, heel interessant en leerzaam. Bewijs dat Nederland op het gebied van waterwetenschap wereldwijd toonaangevend was. Daarnaast een bos waar je heerlijk kunt wandelen, ook routes geschikt voor minder validen. Al met al een echte aanrader. Bij de ingang een gezellige plek om te wat te drinken en te lunchen.

Leuke route om te lopen met kinderen en te zien hoe de waterwerken eruit zien. Er is voldoende parkeergelegenheid en de mogelijkheid om bij een klein tentje koffie/drinken te halen.

Een mooi bos dat tot de verbeeldinig spreekt, overal doorkijkjes, waterwerken. Veel libelle's en andere dieren. Een fijn bos om te wandelen voor elke leeftijd. Ook was het fijn een mooi lang verhard pad te kunnen lopen voor als je slecht ter been bent of gebruik maakt van een rolstoel, dus ook geschikt voor kinder/wandelwagens. Een aanrader in elk seizoen.

Prachtig bos met restanten van modellen waterloopkundig buiten-laboratorium. Routes duidelijk gemarkeerd. Het is een vochtig bos. Dat is bijzonder, maar bij nat weer zijn laarzen aan te raden.
