There were less people as we went on an off peak time. The temple has a history and it has beautiful sculptures around it. Its well worth a visit and perform a ritual .

Munneswaram Kovil Temple – ein lebendiger Hindutemple. Es ist ein Ort der Religion und Zurückhaltung ist angebracht, aber wir konnten (waren die einzigen Touristen) ohne dass sich jemand gestört fühlte durch den Temple laufen die Atmosphäre erspüren und respektvoll ein paar Fotos machen.

Hinduistický chrámový areál Munneswaram, ležící nedaleko Chilow, vznikl okolo roku 1000 a je to jeden z nejvýznamnějších hinduistických chrámových areálů na Sri Lance, hlavní chrám je zasvěcený bohu Šivovi. Ve středověku patřil do tamilského království Kotte a poté do tamilského království Jaffna.
Chrám byl částečně zničen Portugalci, poté byl ale obnoven. Na začátku 19. století byl ke stávajícím třem hinduistickým chrámům doplněn další chrám a to boha Ganeši a koncem 19. století byl do areálu doplněn budhistický chrám.
Většina turistů si prohlíží hlavně nejstarší chrám - je zjevné, že byl mnohokrát přestavován, za návštěvu rozhodně stojí.
Velice zajímavým obřadem je rozbíjení kokosu, kdy se věřící chvíli soustředí a poté prudce hodí kokos na kámen.

Lord Rama after his victorious battle left for Ayodhya in one of King Ravana's vimana's. He felt he was being followed by “Brahmahasthi Dosham” as he had killed King Ravana who was a Brahmin. He stopped the vimana at this juncture because he felt at this place the 11`Brahma hasthi Dosham" was not following him. He ascended from the vimana and asked God Shiva for a remedy. God Shiva blessed Lord Rama and advised him to install four lingams at Manavari, Thiru Koneshwaram, Thiru Ketheshwaram and Rameshwaram in India and pray, as the only remedy to get rid of the “Brahmahasthi Dosham”.

Munneswaram Temple complex is a collection of five temples, including a Buddhist temple. The central temple dedicated to Shiva is the most prestigious and biggest, and is popular amongst Hindus. The other temples are dedicated to Ganesha, Ayyanayake and Kali. The Kali temple is popular with Buddhists and Roman Catholics. Seems to be a bitthere for everyone. Dont understand why the need to buy fruit get a blessing and then give away the fruit.

First let me say we are not Hindu, but we do respect all faiths. This temple had some interesting architecture . You are required to remove your shoes and hats of course plus wear something that covers your knees. A number of men in our group wore shorts and they did not seem to up set anyone. The whole interior needs a steam clean and a paint job, long overdue. There were a couple of painters there at the time but that is likely to take forever. The sculptures inside were very interesting and artistic.
It was what I saw outside that concerned me. There was a dog in the most appalling distressing state of health, obviously in pain . There was a cow with a rope around its neck and the rope was tied to its front right hoof so it could not move without difficulty and no doubt pain. I must be wrong, but I thought Hindus were meant to respect and care for animals, perhaps they should take a look outside!

Par rapport aux temples bouddhistes, ceux hindous sont très colorés et ornés d'une multitude de statues à plusieurs têtes. Nous pouvons en faire le tour mais malheureusement pas visiter l'intérieur. L'extérieur avec ses couleurs flashies donne à l'ensemble un petit air de parc d'attraction ...
