A night to remember. Started as soon as we left the harbour when we spotted 2 different species of dolphin. Crew looked after us well and provided lots of information on the turtles. Sunset was fabulous we then sat in the sand waiting for a tutle to arrive. We watched her crawl up the beach and kept a distance as she started to dig her nest. Once she started laying her eggs we were able to move in close to watch under a red light torch without disturbing her and even touch her shell. After having sand flicked all over us as she buried her eggs we watched as she waddled back down to the sea where the edge of the water was glowing & flashing blue lights due to phytoplankton. The walk back to the boat in the dark was fun! On the Journey back we had a very nice supper with drinks. Seeing flying fish was another bonus. Pls note. there is some sitting in and crawling across the sand dunes. Sand gets everywhere. Photos are difficilt once it gets dark (very little light, no flash or white light allowed).

We are a family of wildlife lovers and this was the best tour we have ever done. Georgia & Nicola were so knowledgeable about the turtles, the island, its history and its significance to Indigenous Australians. The island itself was spectacular. Georgia & Nicola went out of their way to answer every question we had and to ensure we could watch the turtle come up from the water and lay her eggs, while making sure she was not negatively impacted by our presence. We were delighted to hear that this company works together with the Austurtle.

The most well thought out tour I've been on. Experienced respectful approach. Plenty to see. Love the collaborative approach with AusTurtle, SeaDarwin and Kenbi. Great meal, fast boat. Highly recommended.

A wonderful tour experience complete with well informed tour guides who clearly had a love for the turtles and a commitment to their survival.
We watched mother flatback turtles come from the sea high above the hightide mark on the beach. We watched as she dug her nest, lay her eggs, and then covered the nest and headed back into the ocean. A surreal experience!
It was only when we released a bucket full of baby turtles into the sea that the cycle was completed.
The team at SeaDarwin gave us the one of the most extraordinary 'nature' experiences ever!
I can't recommend it more highly!

I had already completely booked my Australian trip--airline tickets, hotels, campervan rental, the works--with no knowledge of this tour. I had two days in Darwin at the very end, so I looked at the different tour options. By pure chance, I was in Darwin when one of these tours was available! I took that as a good sign so I booked it right away. And the trip turned out as well or better than I could have hoped. :) First, as soon as we landed on the island and a little before sunset, we saw a mama turtle making her way up the beach! They usually don't come up so early. This was great because we were able to watch and photograph/video everything while it was still light. The researchers were on the island at the time, so we also got to talk to them and watch them making measurements of the mama turtles, checking their tags, etc. They had a bucket with several hatchlings in it. (I don't quite remember why, but there was a good reason for this..maybe they were found wandering on the island.) So we got to hold them! Once it got dark, we released them into the water. Meanwhiie, another mama had come up and dug her nest, so we watched her until it was time for us to get back on the boat. Dinner was good. My tips would be to wear some sort of shoes, even though the management was recommending bare feet. There are pieces of coral and other things in the sand, so there is some risk of a cut or other injury, as you will be walking around in the dark. Also, bring a flashlight (torch) or headlamp that has a red lens or bulb, so you have your own light you can use. ;)

The sun had just gone down. We are all staring at the guide when she is digging into the sand in front of us. Suddenly a small head appears. And then another one. The small fins are moving like propellers and soon the baby turtle has dig out of the hole. Her siblings are not far behind. They crawl over the beach down to the roaring ocean. On their way, one of them touches my bare foot, before it throws itself into the dark water.
Joining SeaDarwin on the two hour boat trip to Bare Sand Island to see the turtles is like being in the middle of a live nature documentary. However, we had to walk around a bit on the beach, and were almost ready to give up and head back to the boat, before the guide found a hole with eggs that were going to be hatched that night. It's all about luck and being there the right season. We were also lucky to see the mother turtle lying eggs.
Do not miss this amazing experience if you happen to be in Darwin during the right months!

Our experience was virtually identical to Azure81's a year earlier, right down to our tour occurring on the night after the super moon. My husband has restricted mobility, and the staff were both kind and professional without being suffocating in their atttentions, carrying a chair close to the laying nests, handing him hatchlings to hold and allowing him to enjoy the beauty of the sunset and the rising moon. We watched three turtles move up the beach, nest and struggle back to the water. One of the guides dug up a nest and found two hatchlings under the shells abandonned by the others as they left, so they were led to the water instead of dehydrating and mummifying at the bottom of the nest. Our tour was a present, one of the best we have had.

Hi, we took this tour in late June 2014 (2A - incl. one senior & 1C - 12 yo). It's a long fairly uneventful journey out to Bare Sand Island. But the sea was not rough and nobody felt unwell - maybe a little windswept.
You need to be very patient but we were fortunate to see adult female turtles on beach to lay eggs and also some new hatchlings return to sea. I did at times feel we were intruding but tour operators and researchers insisted we (the tour group) were not disrupting or interfering with the natural process of laying eggs. However, lights do mess with the turtle's navigating skills so lights from shore, boats, fireworks etc. are problematic for the turtle population.
The tour leader was very knowledgeable. We were also fortunate to hear from turtle researchers who were resident on the island at the time.
Some tips:
1. Park your car out on the wharf (where you can drive no further) and walk back to boat which will be docked on the left. It is signed but we were rushing and had a little trouble locating the boat.
2. You will be given a small snack on board and can buy alcohol / soft drink / juice but dinner may be very late so suggest you take some snacks that you can eat either on board or on island (be careful to leave no waste).
3. Use the toilet before you depart and on the boat because there are no toilet facilities on island. Remind your kids of this!
4. Take a red head torch/lamp if you have one. Normal white light torches can not be used.
Be prepared for a long night but hopefully you will be rewarded with a rare experience and insight into these magnificent creatures.
