Because we enjoyed our 2023 Outback Spirit Arnhem Land tour so much, we took the Leichhardt Savannah tour in August 2024. It lived up to all our expectations. Our driver/guide and tour leader/guide were delightful, friendly people, very good at their jobs, articulate and able to share their considerable knowledge. Passengers' safety and enjoyment was paramount.
The 4wd vehicle was very comfortable for the very long distances. Stops for refreshment and "leg-stretching" were planned for pleasant, shady picnic sites. We visited special places, some available only to Outback Spirit, and travelled roads where we would not take our own vehicle. We met and mingled with locals and learnt about their lives in this isolated part of Australia.
Accommodation was in clean, comfortable, ensuite rooms. Most were air-conditioned; fans were provided in others and we slept comfortably.
Meals, chosen from limited menus, were delicious. Those passengers who had notified special dietary needs were catered for very well.
Wifi / internet was not available at one station and signal on the roads was patchy. Satellite phone communication was always available for emergencies.
Fellow passengers were mature, mostly retired, of varying levels of fitness. Length and difficulty of walks were clearly described, a shorter, less taxing alternative was available.
We are looking forward to our next Outback Spirit adventure.

This is an epic journey across the gulf from Cairns to Darwin or vice versa and visits some of the most remote regions in Australia, places only a small proportion of Australians can say they have been. As you discovered, many would not feel comfortable travelling this part of the country on their own, but with Outback Spirit you can rest assured that we take care of everything for you so you can sit back and enjoy the adventure of a lifetime. Our crews are supported by 24 hour operational support and the latest safety features on the 4WD coach. Nothing is left to chance, including who we select to guide you on your tour. Outback Spirit runs very informative and comprehensive bus tours to Cape York, starting in Cairns and flying back from Horn Island. The first full day is spent in the Daintree area, and the contrast between the rainforest and the outback later in the trip is amazing. The company works closely with many small tourism attractions, so that we had specialist guides at many of the stops. The food and accommodation was very good, especially at Outback Spirits private wilderness lodges, Lotus Bird Lodge and Moreton Telegraph Station. We stayed for 2 nights at each of the lodges, which were the highlight of the trip.
Of course the “bucket list” moment for us was the hike to the Tip. Although the track is a bit rocky and hilly, most of our tour group managed at least part of the way and were rewarded with spectacular views of the coastline.
Our tour included many extra sightseeing activities such as a helicopter flight over Lakefield National Park, boat trips on the Daintree River and Embley River at Weipa where we saw crocodiles up close, and tours on Thursday Island and Horn Island.
It was a great way to see an isolated part of Australia and we can recommend Outback Spirit to take you there!

Well appointed and comfortable bus, accompanied by an experienced driver and guide, Both with wonderful people skills and great company.
Places of interest well worth it. Accommodation all great in special locations.
Meals- over and above expectation.

This was a fantastic trip to the top of Cape York, Thursday, Friday and Horn Islands. Not usually a fan of organised tours but this one was exceptional. John and Jenny our bus driver and tour leader were fabulous. If I went on another Outback Spirit tour I would want them as the leaders! This was one trip where all of the passengers were on time every time! A big highlight of this trip which is only accessible on a tour was the Lotus Bird Lodge. Remote, no TV, no phones - bliss!! Gary and Sue are fabulous hosts and Gary is quite the character! Meals were absolutely amazing as was the helicopter flight with John the pilot. All the staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly with special mention of Lani!!

We are not one for organised tours. we normally plan our own itineraries and do our own thing. We decided to do the Cape with Outback Spirit and couldn't have been happier.
John and Jenny were great tour guides. We were a little disappointed that we missed the Bloomfield part of the trip due to water/rain levels, but this was compensated for by seeing a lot more water in the rivers for the rest of the journey.
accommodation and meals were first class as were the day trips and experiences. we leant a lot about the Cape, the rainforests and the people.
The seafood at Lotus Bird Lodge was exceptional. Gary, Sue, Lani and the rest of the team gave us an amazing experience.
The visit to the pearl farm, trip to Horn Island - including seeing the new gun emplacement - were fabulous.

We’re sorry you missed the Bloomfield section through the Daintree. We unfortunately can’t do much about the odd bit of wet weather here or there, and the Bloomfield Track can be slippery and quite a handful after heavy rain.

Our approx. 2 hr guided walk thru the rainforest was fascinating. Guide( forget name- oldish English chap, didn't live at the property) had some amazing stories particularly relating to the determination of the age of the rainforest and some individual species there. His botanical knowledge was quite mind-boggling! I could easily have spent a whole day there.

I cannot speak highly enough of Outback Spirit. Our tour guides, Paul and Faye were outstanding, they met our every need and more. I personally had a previous injury from which I was still recovering and was offered help beyond compare at every turn.
Our accommodation, meals, even the picnic lunches, were first class all the way. Nothing was dismissed or too much trouble. The 2-night stays in two different locations gave us time to relax and enjoy the area or engage in helicopter flights or other added adventures.
I highly recommend Outback Spirit for your journeys - you will return home with the very best memories.

First time on a tour for my husband. After much trepidation he found himself having a terrific time. The 4WD buses are fantastic and we were extremely comfortable considering the roads. All accommodation and food was best of what is available with an amazing seafood banquet at Lotus Bird Lodge. We met some very interesting locals on our trip which gave us a genuine appreciation for the area. Outback spirit have certainly got it right

On the Cape York trip what was the weather and temperature like for the ?month? Did you have any problems with mosquitoes or other biting insects? My husband is an allergy sufferer. I am a Type 2 diabetic and also unable to eat fish or any seafood.

we travelled in July and the weather was warm. Light long sleeve shirt and pants for early morning and evening. But had no bother with insects but did put on recommended deterrent, and Spray jacket for some of the boat trips. A good variety of fresh food and just notify tour operator in advance of dietary needs.

With so many one night stop-overs, when do people have time to wash some clothes and relax ? Obviously long distances are covered most days so does this mean very early starts in the morning ?

Hi ,we were usually on the road by 7.30. There is always a stop for morning tea and then lunch plus any scenic spots along the way. Washing was done on the two night stopovers or a little bit each night. Didnt seem to be a problem.
