Great guides, Nev and Nick, and a fun river. Safety first but fun is second. The river is gorgeous. A great climax to our NZ vacation!

Justin was an awesome guide. Appreciated all the history he shared along the way. Beautiful kayak trip and visit to the natural hot springs. Really enjoyed the bones route to the caves to see glow worms. Highly recommend!

This was our first white water rafting tour. We didn’t know what to expect but it was above and beyond. I think more description needs to be made such as the worlds highest commercial waterfall would be helpful. It as exciting for sure.

With very high water levels, the rating was more like a 4.5 for the biggest rapids. I was really nervous, but Nick was an amazing guide. I felt so comfortable and had so much fun! Highly recommend!

Amazing guides. Very laid back dudes that were super funny. Just a couple of kiwis running a sweet rafting business. Highly recommend to anyone that needs a bit of adventure in the north island. Cheers! Super beginner friendly if you are worried. It was the first time everyone in our group had done any sort of rafting and our guide made it super easy!

The Team was professional throughout, with just enough humour in the pre-trip talks to keep it light, just enough serious to get the important points across.
Owen - our boat guide was exactly the same, with great coaching, and quick instructions when on the water in both English and Japanese for our three colleagues.
....and we needed it. I've been white water rafting twice before, the Kaituna river (the one with the 7 metre drop) and in Queenstown. The first 1.5kms, (after our initial 500 metres of coaching) on this river are pure adrenaline and more of an experience than the Kaituna - which although impressive and fun, is over relatively quickly in comparison to this run. The grade 4 rapids are big at times, and it doesn't stop for a hectic run, and long..
Highlight of the trip to date, which has included lots of cool stuff.
Thanks guys

We weren’t sure of the weather and so brought layers etc. We were pleasantly surprised by the fact they really mean it when they say “ just bring a swimsuit and a towel.” They were well equipped for every weather contingency to make us warm, dry and comfortable. Bravo
The kayaking was doable even for 60 something’s. The hot springs marvelous and we even made a short detour to a cave where we all actually saw some glow worms. Extra treat for us. Thank you J! Who also was very knowledgeable and amused us with Māori legends and local tales.

The experience was amazing! From booking to transport to the actual rafting! Our guide Dave did great explaining and having fun as well as navigating a very nervous passenger! We also had another boat along with the other guide Nev who was amazing as well! This was my third white water trip and definitely beat my others! Beautiful surroundings as well! Highly recommend

Hello,
I would like to know how many kilometers distance it is to kayak in total on the evening kayaking trip with hot pool, bbq, glow worm caves.
Thanks so much in advance

Hi Steph,
We cover just under 7km all up.
It is around 3.2km to the Hot Pools and about 3.6km back via the Glow Worm cave.
Depending on how well people paddle, wind conditions etc it takes anywhere from about 45 minutes to 1 1/4 hours paddling each way.
Provided it is not windy the paddling is fairly cruisy.
Regards
Justin
I am planning a trip to New Zealand in April 2020. What type of weather and water temperature would we have for a rafting trip in April?
RiverRatNZ

Conditions are generally quite settled although there may be the occasional cold snap. Trips run all year round and there is a good variety of gear to keep you warm regardless of the weather.

Is there raft trips year round? I'm planning for October.
RiverRatNZ
โรโตรัว, นิวซีแลนด์10 ผลงาน
All trips except the Wairoa Rafting and Evening Guided Hot Pools Kayak operate year round subject to minimum numbers and water levels.
The Wairoa is a dam release river and usually operates on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month in October, but exact release dates are not available till around Mid July.
Hi, I am now planning our New Zealand trip in December for me and my friend. The Kaituna grade 5 raft looks really fun, but we both don’t really know how to swim. Is it ok for us to do this one then ? Thanks a lot
RiverRatNZ
โรโตรัว, นิวซีแลนด์10 ผลงาน
The Kaituna River is a unique stretch of River, known as a pool-drop River.
It is our most popular trip as you get the excitement of the 14 rapids, including 3 waterfalls, without having to work too hard. The 7m waterfall, Tutea Falls, is also a major reason for clients wishing to experience this trip.
Although it provides full on action the rapids are less technically difficult so you can concentrate on having a good time, and enjoying being surrounded in native NZ bush in a deep gorge. Although it is rated as grade 5 for around 80% of the customers on this river it is their first time rafting.
The lifejacket will provide floatation so it is not essential to be able to swim.
From a customers point of view you need to paddle in time and hold on tight and be comfortable that around 1 boat in 20 will flip upside down at the main waterfall.
The waterfall and all the other major rapids run into calm water so there is time to get the boat upright and get everyone back in.
Minimum age limit 13 (children under 10 can join the trip at the halfway point)
You will spend around 45 -50 minutes on the water, all up you need allow 2 - 2 1/2 hours from the start time at our base.
The trip is $105 per person

How is the "Twilight Kayak" different from the regular white water rafting tour?
RiverRatNZ
โรโตรัว, นิวซีแลนด์10 ผลงาน
The Twilight Kayak is a sea kayak trip on Lake Rotoiti. The trip is generally pretty placid but this does depend on wind.
The White Rafting is in a raft on a river with rapids. The difficulty of the trip varies with the grades. The Grade 2 scenic trip is the easiest and the grade 5 Wairoa and Kaituna are the hardest.
I hope this answers your question. If you have any other questions let me know.

How many kilometers is the actual river trip?
RiverRatNZ
โรโตรัว, นิวซีแลนด์10 ผลงาน
Apologies for the delay in replying. For some reason we did not receive a question alert.
The Kaituna River trip is about 2.2km long. The trip takes around 50 minutes on the river. All up you need to allow around 2 - 2 1/2 hours or 3 including transfers.

Hi, we are thinking about doing the rangitaiki rafting trip but our youngest daughter will only just have turned 12. what are the requirements / conditions for kids under 13?
RiverRatNZ
โรโตรัว, นิวซีแลนด์10 ผลงาน
Thank you for your enquiry.
They need to be accompanied by an adult.
They need to walk around one small section near the beginning of the trip. This is only around 150m out of the 14km trip. If water levels are low we walk everyone around this section.
They need to fit all the safety gear. If they are 40kg or over this will not be a problem. If they are less than 40kg we would recommend coming into our head office before hand to check that they fit the gear o.k.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have further questions.

Do you have tandem kayaks? What is the weight limit on the kayaks AND is the weight requirements for a child to be in a single kayak?
RiverRatNZ
โรโตรัว, นิวซีแลนด์10 ผลงาน
Hi there,
Thank you for your question.
We have both sea kayaks and sit on top kayaks in both single or tandem. The weight limit for the tandem kayak is 225kg. With the sea kayaks, bigger people may have trouble or be uncomfortable sitting in the cockpit. There is no weight limit for children, they need to be strong and capable enough to kayak on their own. If they are not, we recommend seating them in a tandem kayak with a adult. Please dont hesitate contacting us further if you have any further questions or would like to make a booking.
Regards,
River Rats.

We will be on a cruise with Holland America and in Tauranga by 8:00AM on Nov. 9, 2015. We leave at 6:00PM. Would it be possible to do your #5 trip and if so do you pick up at cruise ship?

Thank you for your enquiry.
It would most defiantly be possible for you to raft the Kaituna Grade 5. We could organise a shuttle service that would drop you off to our head office for the 12.30pm tour, we would return you back to Rotorua in time for the return shuttle that leaves from Rotorua I-site at 3.15pm. Please feel free to email for further details or to make a booking.
Kind regards,
River Rats.
