This is an all day activity because the park is large to get around and you can't always catch the volunteer-driven buses that are going around. I've seen wildlife parks in a better state than this one but there were still some interesting attractions such as hand feeding the giraffes. Overall, I confess that the experience was hot and dusty and somewhat underwhelming.

Thank you Ann for taking the time to write a review. As New Zealand's only open range zoo this means our Park is larger and generally more rustic as the Park is set on 180 hectares, so we are not like most urban zoos where the animals are in smaller habitats. We are pleased to hear you still found some interesting attractions like hand feeding our majestic giraffes and hope you visited NZ's only gorillas while at the Park.

Large list of animals to see. They all looked happy and contented in their spacious areas. Baby giraffe was so cute. Loved the Gorillas. Food and beverages in the cafe were good. All staff really friendly and helpful. Well done all.

What a wonderful place. Animals genuinely cared for, lovely volunteers thete to not only help but to enhance the experience and to top it off a super cafe with a great range of fresh and home prepared food, with very friendly team of staff in there. Clearly a well run place- their terrace has nice views out over some of the park too.

We had made a weekend trip to Christchurch purely to visit the park and we were extremely letdown by the overall experience.
The minute we walked through the gates I instantly thought the place looked abandoned.
The grass and weeds were over grown. Random broke, cracked pavements leading to dead ends.
Random sign posts, wide open spaces and empty fields/ paddocks with no animals that we can only assume had animals there before.
There was rubbish in and around one of the enclosures.
Some animals and one in particular looked very sad, just sitting there in the corner of its den looking at the floor.
I agree with a previous review that more shelter is needed, both from the sun and the rain, as we did get caught in the rain had to shelter under a tree for 30 mins before eventually walking in the rain.
We did the whole park in just over three hours, including a lunch break, which we assumed would of took all day.
The overall experience was a real shame, as I heard that the park was a real hit a few years back so I can only assume that Covid is to blame.
The place really needs more maintenance of the grounds and some liveliness as the atmosphere was not great. I really hope the park and the animals get the TLC they deserve.
Sad to say I doubt we will be back for a very long time.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback following your visit to Orana Wildlife Park. We value all customer feedback and appreciate you taking the time to provide your comments.
Naturally, we are disappointed to hear Park did not meet your expectations. Orana is set on 80 hectares and is home to over 1000 animals representing 90 different species. The balance we aim to achieve in an open range setting is displaying animals in spacious exhibits whilst also not having visitors peer at specks in the distance. Over the years, we have worked hard to develop a range of interesting scheduled daily animal feed presentations enabling visitors to view our animals up close and to interact with the keepers during their public talks.
I will pass your comments onto the maintenance team in regards to the Park seeming rundown. We have a small but hardworking maintenance team along with our amazing volunteers who help us tidy the Park, with the extreme heat we are currently experiencing there is a fire risk so we are having to limit the use of electrical mowing appliances. Prior to this we had a period of rain/sun/rain/sun which caused a surge in growth through the Park and due to the size we were unable to keep up with it.
Orana Wildlife Park is a registered charitable trust and not-for-profit organization. We heavily rely on gate takings to operate and in fact, over 80% of our income is derived from gate sales, so we thank you for visiting. Your support goes directly back into the Park and allows us to continue our conservation work, such as breeding kākāriki karaka for release to the wild.
Thank you again for your feedback. We hope you will consider visiting us again.

I will always be a supporter of Orana Park - I don't get there as often as I would like, because of time and money constraints, but it's always a pleasure when I do.
So things I would love to see, to make the trips more enjoyable would be some sheltered walking areas in the long walks between enclosures. Many of the open spaces (especially in the summer) are so exposed and we had to leave yesterday because it was just too hot. Shelter over the play area would be good too.
I understand much of this would be costly with installation and maintenance and most of the money goes to the animals, but I think it would be a good investment, as it would draw more people and would double as rain shelter too.
Perhaps more plants to liven the place up too - the last 3 times I've been, it's looked pretty dreary.
As I said, I do enjoy myself there and love the work you guys do, would just be good to see the park get some TLC.
Also, have you had any thoughts about getting mobile eateries on sight, at either end or even just drinks?

Great zoo, with the animals having loads of space. That does sometimes mean you can’t see the animals but they all seemed happy. Pretty much everything was accessible for a pushchair, but there was no change table in the men’s toilets which seemed short sighted of a family attraction. A separate baby changing room would have been good. We went at the height of summer and there was only one cafe open so make sure you have enough food and drinks for the whole way around. The cafe was very very slow to make a coffee, so much so that we didn’t bother getting anything for lunch, we just went home. Overall we had a good trip though, the gorillas, kiwi and giraffes were the highlights.

We only have the one cafe and at peak times this can get very busy. There are two bbq's which are free for visitors to use as well as picnic areas where visitors are welcome to bring their own food to enjoy.

The last time I visited the park is was pre Covid. Went today and was met with a fairly sad and neglected place. It felt unloved unlike previous visits.
Everything from the toilets to the enclosures felt grotty. Viewing windows for the tiger and lions were either so dirty u couldn’t see what was inside or covered in bird muck. The reptile cages and cockatoo cage were full of dead foliage, the tortoise clearly was being fed the wrong diet as it’s shell was pyramiding badly.
The waterways, always so pristine, we’re stagnant and clogged. It’s fairly typical not to see many animals on an average day but to that coupled with the sorry conditions made the almost $100 entrance a real waste of money.

Hi Claire, thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback following your visit to Orana Wildlife Park. We value all customer feedback and appreciate you taking the time to provide your comments. Naturally, we are disappointed to hear the Park did not meet your expectations.
We have a professional cleaning company clean our bathroom facilities every day and our team checks them through out the day so I apologies if you found them in an unkempt manner. January 3 was the busiest day our Park has seen in the last three years owing to a beautiful day, our boarders opening and the Christmas/NY period so our team were slammed. Our team ensure fresh foliage is put into our animals enclosures each day however, with the high temperatures we have been seeing this can look "dead" very quickly. With regards to our tortoise shells "pyramiding badly" I have spoken to our dedicated keepers to find out more about this. Our tortoise Blotchy and Stripy are 45yo, they come to us from less than ideal circumstances and sadly were fed cat food prior to coming to Orana. This resulted in a poor start to life because of their nutrient deficiencies which resulted in their scute growing rapidly causing the pyramiding to be quite prominent. Our team ensure they both have a healthy diet specific to their needs, this is adjusted throughout the seasons to meet their needs. Thank you again for your feedback.

Orana park is a great zoo. The animals have lots of space to roam. There are lots of feedings during the day Wich are very good to watch, so I recommend going to them. There are only a few things I am a bit sad about Witch is that the orangutans are not there anymore and some of the islands with moats around them are not getting used anymore. Overall orana park is a great place to visit and I recommend it to everyone.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review. We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your visit and feeding our precious animals. We were privileged to care for Auckland Zoo's orangutans while their new habitat was built, as this has opened they have gone back to Auckland where they are enjoying their new habitat and Melur recently had a baby - so worth a visit to see. As the water table in Canterbury changes unfortunately our moats are dropping which means we are unable to hold animals on them. We recently raised over $130,000 to put a new liner on our spider monkey moat so they could return to their island. as they other moats are much larger this would require a huge fundraising effort as 100% of projects are fundraised for. Thank you so much for visiting the Park, we hope to see you again.

A fun day and a great place to see some unique animals.
Strongly advise looking up the show/feeding/talk times first and planning your day around that schedule. The best memories we have are when the talks were on.
Its a big park, so allow enough time to get around it and wear good walking shoes. Take binoculars if you have them. If you don't see an animal, try and check again on the walk back.
There is a golf cart style shuttle that we missed - check the times of these if you want to go on it.

Is there fixed timing for the free shuttle that goes round the park? the shuttle goes clockwise or anti-clockwise? Is it faster to walk to each exhibit than wait for the shuttle?

Hi everyone, thank you for your comments. Our shuttle goes every hour on the half hour (10:30am, 11:30am...) during the week and every half hour (10:30am, 11am...) on the weekends. There is no additional cost for this and you are welcome to use it as often as you like throughout your visit. Please note that the shuttle does not coincide with animal feeding times. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact our friendly reception team on 03 359 7109. We look forward to seeing everyone at the Park soon!

if you could only visit one of the two attractions, would you choose to visit this or wildlife park or to the international artic centre?

It definitely depends on what you are after. The Antarctic centre is more of an experience with a 3D movie, trip in an all terrain vehicle, snow room and a museum and some penguins. Orana is a wildlife park where the attraction is the animals. Both are good but, for me it would depend on the weather. If the weather is bad then I'd go to the Antarctic centre as it's inside. If it's a lovely day then Orana.

How can I get to Orana from Christchurch? I dont have a car, and the shuttle recommended by Orana is expensive... is there another company providing that service?
nathan531

Thank you for the query. Unfortunately there is no public transport to Orana so shuttle companies and/or taxi are the way. The Orana shuttle (a separate company) provides a dedicated door-to-door service to Orana and other companies (such as Super Shuttle) or taxis (such as Gold Band) also provide transport.

Do you recommend a visit for people who can't walk very far?
nathan531
ไครสต์เชิร์ช, นิวซีแลนด์
Yes, certainly. Regular animal feeds occur throughout the day which break up the walking distance. A shuttle tours people around the zoo (note it operates like a bus and doesn't wait at the animal exhibits but operates regularly throughout the visit). Alternatively the guiding team can assist.

Hi there, when visited as a child, we were able to drive our car through the lion enclosure. Does this still happen or do we need to ay $40 each to do it, which is very expensive for a family with teenagers, on top of $30 each park entry?
nathan531
ไครสต์เชิร์ช, นิวซีแลนด์
Hi Kathryn - thanks for the interest in Orana Wildlife Park. The drive-through Lion Reserve closed in 1995 so we no longer permit cars in to the habitat. Visitors can view the public lion feed (2.30pm daily) from many vantage points around the habitat including our raised viewing platform (included in the cost of admission). Alternatively, for an additional cost of $40 per person, our awesome Lion Encounter takes visitors through the Lion Habitat (at 2.30pm) on board our modified vehicle for extremely close views of the cats. Best regards Orana Wildlife Park
