Our second time in New Zealand, and our second time visiting Willowbank! The wildlife experience is exceptional and we loved the guided tour with one of Willowbank's guides into the kiwi area - he helped us see glimpses of the elusive kiwi (they're nocturnal) and made sure we all stayed quiet so that we could hear them rooting around in their darkened den habitat. We loved seeing the many many varieties of birds, particularly the kea and takahe. We had a very delicious lunch here, the salad greens were notable, deeply flavorful and very fresh. Willowbank is well run, clean, accessible, great staff - and the animals here are clearly cherished.
If you've been here in the past, a word to the wise - the Kotane Maori Experience is no longer here, which was very disappointing to us. Covid changed a lot of things, and this was sadly one of them - Kotane does still operate but elsewhere in Christchurch and in a different way......they have plans to regroup and reestablish themselves to resemble their former business model, just no longer at Willowbank.

Willowbank Wildlife Reserve is a great day out for the whole family. Set in a beautiful spot that you can get to on public transport (or your own. The park has a lot to see and do with a great cafe for a meal of coffee. Really enjoyed it here. Highly recommended.

Went here with two little grandchildren (4 & 18 months) who absolutely adored it. It's worth finding out on entry when the feeding times are. They loved watching the otters and the gibbons being fed and hearing the commentary from the (very knowledgeable) staff. Easy to walk round on proper paths (so easy for a pushchair). You can buy food for different animals at the start which is always a winner with littleys.
Good cafe, pretty basic but good children's food and a small variety of sandwiches etc. Plenty of tables inside to eat.
We will be going again as it was such a success so that's a recommendation in itself!

What a fun experience getting to see the Kiwi and the Kea! The Kea swooping in all around was a really exciting touch!
Definitely get all the food for feeding! It was so funny to feed eels and deer and more!

This was an amazing wildlife encounter especially if you hoping to see the elusive kiwi bird. They have a darkened building exclusively for seeing the kiwi. In addition you can experience feeding eels, or encountering a capybara family. Up close viewing.

Big and so many interesting things to see! Really enjoyed coming here, could spend hours here! Got to see kiwis, pet sheep, see huge eels, many birds…what more could I ask for??

Absolutely fantastic fun time! We took kids 11, 9 yrs old with the goal of seeing live Kiwis! And we were not disappointed at all. Such a clean, well made wildlife park, perfect for families and kids and best place to see kiwis by far.

We had a delightful day pottering around Willowbank. Our favourite experiences were feeding the deer, watching the otters frolic, finding the kiwis in the dark, and watching the kea play and swoop.

Absolute must do experience 10/10!!! Myself and a group of friends (adults) went to willowbank and had an incredible experience. We have all been to several similar reserves over the years and found this to be the best yet. So many farm animals that you can feed and pat, all sooo friendly. Saw 3 kiwis up close and personal. Beautiful walk through the reserve as well.

Willowbank is a Wildlife Reserve so is outdoors but is relatively sheltered. Kiwi viewing is still guaranteed as the are in a Nocturnal House.

Hi, We are visiting Christchurch with a four year old kid in December. But we will be there for less than two days. Can we cover the entire wildlife reserve in half a day including a guided Kiwi breeding tour?

HI - Half a day will give you enough time to view the reserve including the kiwis. The kiwi weighing that someone has mentioned is not available as this was a special promotion during school holidays for 'Save the Kiwi Week'.
Unfortunately this breeding season is starting off very unpredictable and we are currently not able to offer the “Kiwi Breeding Tour”. However we do still guarantee you will see kiwi at Willowbank in our Nocturnal House with or without a guided tour.
Our Nocturnal House is rather unique in that it has no glass. There is a path which runs through the Nocturnal House with a small fence on either side and we have usually between 5-7 kiwi on display in here. We ‘guarantee’ kiwi viewing and the kiwi are often up against the fence within touching distance. We offer a Guided Tour through our Natural New Zealand Area (including kiwi, kea etc) at 4.30pm daily for an additional $10 per adult. The Guide will provide lots of additional information as well as ensuring you see the kiwi etc.

It is a good idea to do the Native animals section first - going round last to first as there is so much to see. We had quite small children with us so they were tiring by the time we got to the end. The nocturnal house is wonderful, be very quiet and you will hear the kiwis snuffling about & its so exciting when they call to each other. Enjoy !!
