A wonderful setting and aura, so traditional, so comforting but with such an historic feeling. Every single step up from the Rattray Street entrance takes you closer and closer to the warmth and light of the interior. The churchy aroma is imbued into the furnishings. Certainly worth a visit.

Worth the walk up the hill. The stained glass windows were absolutely incredible as is the architecture and history. A must see

We were passengers on a cruise ship in Dunedin port for one day, which happened to be a Sunday. We knew that Mass was being celebrated at 10.30am, so made a beeline for the Cathedral as soon as we reached the city from Port Chalmers. We're both nearing 80 so were so glad we decided to take a taxi from the Octagon. The Cathedral, like so many, stands proudly and prominently on a hill high up and overlooking the Dunedin CBD. Although it may have Elm Row as an address it officially is at 300 Rattray Street but the front entrance is not the easiest one to access: Elm Row provides that! Once inside the austerity of the external façade gives way to soft interior space, with wooden pews, much stained glass, an imposing altar, complete with Bishop's throne and coat of arms proudly above, and an impressive organ. There's even a grand piano and a well-rehearsed choir. For those who prefer a Latin/Tridentine Mass, it's celebrated each Sunday at 8.30am in the Cathedral/Kavanagh College Chapel directly across from the Cathedral proper. A toilet is placed discreetly inside the principal entrance for those who "need to go". Having taken the taxi up, we decided to walk back down to the Octagon, and I can tell you the walk down borders on the vertiginous! But it will take you past law offices, many of them housed in quite beautiful heritage-worthy buildings, and boutique restaurants, all well worth the effort.

Quite a distance from the main tourist area and requires a climb up a hill but the cathedral has a beautiful facade. Unfortunately, the doors were firmly closed so I was unable to see the interior.

This cathedral is at one of the high points of the city, but I am pleased I made the effort. The design is simple; a rectangular nave with a chapel adjacent to the sanctuary. There are many colourful stained glass windows. I am lucky to be there when the organist is practising. When visiting it is worthwhile seeking out the cathedral chapel, which is set apart from the cathedral itself, up more steps. But this is an attractive space, and I suspect much used by the congregatIon. There are many steps up to the west door, but parking and easy entry can be found at the high end.

The Dunedin Roman Catholic Cathedral really stands out in an elevated position in the city and we wished we had been inside to see it properly as we usually spend some reflection time in religious buildings wherever we go irrespective of denomination.
Unfortunately we were only in Dunedin for one busy pre-organised day with a trip on the Taieri Gorge railway and a city tour, which was when we saw the Cathedral and it looked a lovely building.
