Great walk but zero effort from the council and/or society. Unkept signage that is damaged and uninteresting. In contrast we did the Pinnacle walk at the Grampians. That is the standard this walk should be at. Particularly for its historical significance. Need to lift your game Ballarat.

It could be an amazing walk IF the council spent some money on it. So much potential. Very interesting but not enough info as you go. The memorial at the end is lovely. Still worth doing, but it needs to be more interesting. Ballarat spend some money on it please...it’s history

Retraces as close as possible the march of the troopers and the police to the Eureka Stockade. To this day the police are not welcome in any of the commemorations of the actual event but there is a lot to work through.

The trail starts in town on the corner of Lydiard and Sturt Streets Street next to the old Post office to the Eureka Stockade museum. Brush up on your history of an important historical event in Australia and enjoy the walk through Ballarat.

The Eureka Trail takes you from the Old Post Office, where the original police camp was located corner of Lydiard and Sturt Streets, to the MADE museum about 3.5kms away. The trail takes as best possible the route the troopers took to the Eureka Stockade manned by the gold miners. Walking alongside Yarowee Creek, an old mine at Black Hill and residential streets add variety to the trail.
The trail has some sign postings but a few need to be replaced or repainted as do some of the historic boards that have information relevant to the trail and the troopers planning.
It is a leisurely walk that will appeal to most, young and able. It ends at the MADE museum that also has a great liitle diner, the Saltbush Kitchen, where you can refuel before returning to Ballarat CBD.

Map is attached as not easy to find.

This is a great trail. I just find there are a few spots where it is not well signposted. and there is the odd tunnel that could do with some solar lighting even for during the day.

I discovered this gem of a walk, by accident, when showing a friend the historic Bluestone railway viaduct in Mair Street recently.
The trail begins in Lydiard Street and a trail map and notes, can be picked up at the Ballarat Visitor Information Centre, opposite the Art Gallery in Lydiard Street.
Markers signpost the route clearly at key points of information and where directions change.
The Eureka trail follows the route the police and soldiers took on the fateful morning of 3rd December 1854, when miners, protesting about the hefty price of gold mining licenses, staged the Eureka rebellion, constructing a defensive stockade and taking up arms against the ruling authorities.
The trail has been carefully researched and is based on historical records and writings.
It winds its way along the Yarrowee Creek, past historic houses to the site of the original Eureka Stockade.
Plenty of opportunities exist for photography, snacks, scenic picnics and water top ups, and the trail is accessible on foot, or by bicycle.
Lovers of historic buildings and events will thorougly enjoy a few hours dedicated to exploring the trail.!
Be sensible and take precautions against extreme heat in summer. Commence it in the early morning or late afternoon, wear sunscreen, a hat and comfortable walking shoes!
In winter and cooler weather, warm and waterproof clothing is advised.
An informative, free and fun thing to do for local families and visitors alike!
Couple this with a visit to Sovereign Hill, The Museum of Democracy (Eureka site) and perhaps a Ballarat Old Cemetery or Lydiard St Ghost walk, with Eerie Tours, for a really fun way to learn about Ballarat's significant contribution to Australian History!
