Very few places exist like the Textile Emporium- it's a haven of quality crafts and textiles. There's a wonderful selection of NZ Yarns, lots of knitted and felt hats, woven and knitted scarves and wraps, silk scarves, small items suitable for gifts, gorgeous quilts, woollen and cotton jackets and much more.

I went in today & just stood in the entry looking at all the lovely stuff for a couple of minutes.
There was a great stand of handwoven dishclothes in simple patterns (& some knitted ones - American type), felted hats & cardigans/wraps, knitted scarves/headbands & a lovely range of commercially & handdyed yarns.
There were some Ashford Knitters looms & spindles for sale. To fuel those :) were several bags of lovely dark Gotland fleece, a couple of bags of fawn alpaca top & next to them some gorgeous handspun yarn in natural colours. I bought some NZ Halfbred yarn in creamy white & a fawn colour.
Also some knitting needles & cute glass bead & paua shell jewellery at the counter. The lady in charge was lovely & for those that haven't seen one before they have a 'great wheel' on display.

We stopped in for a coffee and found the staff short and irritable. The coffee was decent, but no takeaway lids. We felt as though we had inconvenienced the staff by visiting, so we didn't stay to look around further.

Textiles are underrated by most people. The Textile Emporium (as it's now called) has textile-related items made by local artisans, keeping alive techniques that have been around for centuries as well as showcasing newer ones. There's weaving, spinning, knitting, crocheting, sewing, felting, dyeing, doll-making and all manner of textile-related accessories, as well as a wonderful collection of hand-dyed wools. An excellent place for crafters to get supplies, for overseas visitors to browse and to see artisans making their work.

In den weißen Kalksteinhäusern des alten Hafenviertels aus dem 19. Jahrhundert haben sich die Oamarurer eine sehenswerte, außergewöhnliche Shoppingmeile mit unterschiedlichsten Geschäften und Ausstellungen geschaffen.
Ein "Must do", wenn man in der Stadt zu Gast ist.

Handdyed wool, weaving materials and much much more. Great shop to spend heaps of time and money if you are not careful.

...und nicht nur der Textile Exchange. Die Küstenstrecke von Christchurch nach Oamaru sollte man lieber meiden, denn es gibt nicht viel Sehenswertes. Bei unserem nächsten Trip, werden wir von Christchurch zum Mount Cook und in den umliegenden National Park fahren, um dann von dort nach Oamaru zu gelangen.
Besonders die Gegend um die Harbour Street in Oamaru hatte es uns angetan. Die vielen kleinen Geschäfte, die Bäckerei, die Whisky Verkostung, der Bildhauer und das Hotel Criterion alleine sind es wert um in Oamaru zu verweilen. Bei einem ausgiebigen Rundgang durch die Stadt, werden Sie noch weitere Attraktionen entdecken, wie das alte Hotel Empire von 1867 (Packpacker) oder das Restaurant und Pub "The Last Post".
In der Nähe der Harbour Street liegt auch die Blue Pinguin Colony. Leider durfte man hier nicht photographieren (auch ohne Blitz) daher haben wir diese kostenpflichtige "Attraktion" nicht besucht. Ich bin bereit fast jeden Preis zu zahlen, aber meine Photos mache ich selbst!!! Schade, dass es dort nicht möglich war.
