Thank you Nelson Museum for displaying “contraptions” a fun interactive exhibition and once again thanks to Ryan for another lovely respectful friendly welcome; such a wealth of information not only of this exhibition but of the collection .
And definitely next time we are in the South Island , Nelson region we will visit again.

We stopped in Nelson on the way to Picton and paid a visit to this interesting little museum in the centre of the city. The staff are nice and the exhibits are representative of the local history and culture. We enjoyed the special touring exhibit on automata as well. The museum experience was worth the reasonable visitor admission fee.

Been twice, once with the giant squid and more recently with the "contraptions". Very nice museum, small enough for a quick pop in. Also a bigger section regarding Nelson.

Interesting to see a museum on the main street of a city and was on my list of things to see as I do like local history. Apparently is the oldest museum in NZ dating originally back to 1841 I read somewhere.
Unfortunately, we could only see the downstairs area as upstairs was closed as they had just finished an exhibit, so was a reasonably short visit - at $5 each, it didn't break the bank though. Some good local history and some interesting stories of a few locals you could stand and listed to - one in particular really intrigued me about a Chinese sailer who left his ship in Nelson after falling in love with the place and listening to his story leaving from home at 9 years old to be a cabin boy!

The Museum is easily found in the main centre. It is relatively small but has a great focus on local history. Very pleasant place to spend a couple of hours.
