Odiham Castle is a ruin, and could use more signposts on the canal, but the information boards are excellent. If you are passing nearby, then go and see it. In some ways, it is a postscript in history, but it is interesting nonetheless.
King John was one of the least popular kings but this puts some of his life and those around him in perspective.

Great stop for a picnic. We were on the way to West Dorset and found this just off the M3. Interesting and peaceful. Don't forget to check the board behind it to see how it looked 500 years ago

A little bit of a hidden treasure if you're into history. A lovely little ruin built well over 800 years ago for King John (he of Magna Carta fame). The castle is free to wander, with areas that feature informative historical information about the ruin and its surroundings . It's location runs alongside the beautiful Basingstoke to London canal. A very peaceful location and a great place to have your packed lunch.

Had a lovely wander round. Probably not the best time of year but it was crisp and sunny so we enjoyed ourselves. Very picturesque. Thank you to the very kind dog walker to pointed us in the right direction for a mid-morning coffee. Cheers!

A little bit of history also known as King Johns castle. The information boards take you back to the early 12th century, Magna Carta and numerous kings telling a story of various reigns. The castle is now a ruin but you can go in inside to view what remains. Worth a look when passing by along the canal.

We came across the remains of this castle which hiking along the canal on the outskirts of Odiham.
The remains have good signage.
You can get close; however, there is a fence all around the ruins to protect it.
The path was mucky as there has recently been rain.

A rather nice 13th-century castle, with the ruins nestled down along the canal. A nice location for a walk, and clearly popular with the locals. Dragon-flies, ducks, some dogs who had jumped into the water... All very pleasant. :)

The castle Ruins will intrigue all age groups considering it’s over 900 years old the parts of the castle left are intriguing it gives you the story who lived there throughout the years and the history, there is also a lovely walk by the Canal you can also see fields and cows where you are allowed to go in as there is a lake/massive pound where you can explore, please note that when you drive to the end of the dead end road this is where you will need to park and walk a short distance to the castle and canal walks it’s worth a visit on a sunny day and I would recommend taking drinks and a picnic

The castle ruins engaged little one and she enjoyed reading about the history of Castle. The walk along the canal and history of the canal was calm and tranquil and we were even fortunate to see a formation of ducks and geese head down stream. Lovely quiet walk to end a fantasticday.

Odiham Castle is a lovely place to look around. To get there you have to park up on the road before the bridge. From there its across the bridge then
left turn and a walk along the canal bank. The place is a ruin but from a historic point its great. It is 900 years old after all !
Definitely worth a visit.

I have a young puppy so would like to know how long the walk is from parking the car to the castle please? Thank you

It is not a very long walk from the car park to the castle, probably about 10-15 minutes I think 🙂
