The hike is not without its challenges.
It had rained shortly before when we were there. The gorge was steamy and hot. There were snakes (mountain adder). So be careful. The tour goes through a beautiful landscape, always with a view of the Tugela River and the amphitheater. But it takes a while. It is constantly uphill. The weather changes quickly. In some places the path is broken and the alternative path is very difficult to find. You should have a certain level of fitness and alpine experience.
The starting point is the car park below Thendele Camp.

they have all the amenities required and the etablishment is clean. Its not the most decorative place, and has an bygone era feel to the decor, but its one of the comfortables stays in the area. The staff and service was impeccable!

A fabulous walk, an adventurous climb leading to the most stunning views. Exciting descent on chain ladders.
Layden, from Ambhitheatre Backpackers was our guide. He was responsible always look out for our safety and then so much fun we had a great laugh and met some lovely, fellow travellers.
Please don't be tempted to do this trek without a guide as there are potential risks and so please keep safe and wear good boots

The sentinel peak hike takes you from the car park close to Witsieshoek to the top of the amphitheatre, where you can see the Tugela falls and breathtaking views. The hiking trail has been laid out with cement blocks which makes it more accessible and easier to hike. There are 2 chain ladders that you have to conquer to get to the top. An alternative is a gulley which takes about 45 minutes to climb.
Please note the hiking fees is R90 per person. You can pay in cash at the car park, or by card at the Witsieshoek Reception.

An einem regnerischen Tag machten wir uns auf zu einer kurzen Wanderung zu den Tugela Falls. Der Weg führt sehr schön immer den Fluß entlang, allerdings immer auf und ab, so dass am Ende nach 17 km auch noch über 600 hm zusammenkamen. Am Ende der Tour führt der Weg in eine enge Schlucht, dort muss man durch den Fluss waten der etwas mehr als knietief und ziemlich kalt war. Aufgrund des schlechten Wetters hatten wir leider keine Aussicht, die Tour war trotzdem super.
Am nächsten Tag hatten wirt dann da Glück die ganze Breite des Amphitheaters ehen zu können - gigantisch!!

山頂までの登山道は景色が良く、最近時整備された道もあり、安心してトレッキングを楽しめます。
登山口までの道のりが険しく(舗装されていない砂利、岩道)、四駆ではない車で行くのはオススメしません。
近隣の宿泊施設から出ているシャトルバスでも行けます。

Very comfortable lodge in the most incredible location in the Drakensberg. A few steps away and you are in a natural wonder that's hard to describe. This is the highest accommodation in the Berg and gives you easy access to this astonishing wilderness area. The lodge is spotlessly clean, the beds comfortable, hot water is plentiful. The food is plain but quite adequate for after a hike or before setting off. The views are spectacular. A short drive away is the entrance to the Amphitheatre ascent - via the chain ladders or the gully. From the lodge itself are some very lovely walks. We went in November and the slopes were covered in beautiful Alpine flowers.

The Witsieshoek lodge on the edge of the Drakensberg and on the boundary of Kwazulu Natal and the Free State Provinces and on the edge of the Royal Natal Park, has a wonderful view of the Drakensberg and the lower lying Natal.

2nd highest waterfall with incredible views definately worth the walk. Wear a sun hat in summer and 50 factor sun cream or you will get sun stroke/burn. Takes around 3hrs gradual up and 2hr down on average fitness from the carpark. They are putting a permeable path in to stop erosion which is required to protect the mountain. Definately stay at Witsieshoek mountain lodge in a sentinel. You can view the Amphitheatre from your bed and watch the sun rise it is amazing. Take some food and cigarettes for the shepeards, there up there for many months in the storms and unbelievable sun.
