This square is a thought-provoking memorial to those who were murdered in this area or taken from this area to be killed. In the heart of the WWII ghetto, you can easily take a moment here to contemplate the atrocities which happened. In one corner are some display boards telling the history of the local Jewish resistance movement: well worth reading.

The wonderful Lwowska1 hotel where we stayed was directly adjacent to this poignant site. Make sure you read up on what the site signify’s before visiting. It is FREE.

La place des héros du ghetto se trouve à la limite de là ou se trouvait le ghetto de Cracovie de 1941 à 1943 où les derniers habitants fûrent emmenés aux camps.
Avant la guerre c'était une place de marché; soudain elle devient le lieu de rassemblement quand il fallait regrouper la population juive avant des déportations.
Après la guerre elle reçoit son nom actuel en hommage aux victimes.
En 2005 est installé les chaises vides; 33 grandes chaises une par une sur la place et 37 plus petites en groupes le long de la place pour s'asseoir.
Chaque chaise vide represente 10 000 vies perdues. C'est impossible de s'imaginer autant de vies - en pensant qu'une seule chaise represente une petie ville, on comprend peut-être un tout petit peu mieux.
La place est aussi l'endroit où se trouve le musée Eagle Pharmacy - la pharmacie qui a eu le droit de rester ouvert à l'intérieur du ghetto et servait comme centre de communication avec l'extérieur.
Lors de mon passage les chaises étaient décorées avec des images des victimers lors de la commémoration de 80 ans de la liquidation du ghetto.

Dit monument is ter nagedachtenis aan de duizenden Joden van Krakow die gedwongen werden om hier in een getto te leven totdat de laatste Jood afgevoerd werd naar een concentratie- of vernietigingskamp. Elke stoel staat symbool aan duizend Joodse slachtoffers.
In Maart 1943 is deze plek ontruimd.
Er staan 70 🪑 stoelen op het plein en iedere stoel staat voor 1000 overleden Joodse mensen.

Have done free walking tours in Rome and Bucharest and all been very good: this was no exception.
Went with Walkative -yellow umbrella group through freewalkingtours.com. The start time and place was correct and punctual.
Our guide (my apologies for not remembering his name) was an ex history student, around late thirties with a pony tail. He was excellent. The information he provided on the tour of the Jewish quarter and ghetto was very informative and interesting. You could tell he was passionate about his subject and his country. Through his knowledge of Krakow during occupied times and the knowledge of our Auschwitz guide we began to understand what the Jewish and Polish community had to endure during the Nazi occupation.
We found out a lot about Schindler, who is more of a figurehead for what he did rather than a hero, and also about other Polish people who also helped Jews escape but were never recognised for what they did. We feel that maybe the Krakow local government should pay more homage to them in more openly visible ways.
This is definitely a worthwhile tour and thank our guide for an extremely interesting 2 -3 hr tour.

We fell upon this square by mistake. We never knew of it’s existence. There no mention anywhere of this in any brochure. The square has little chairs in memory of the children and large chairs in memory of the adults who lost their lives in the holocaust. It’s a brilliant piece of art and the best part is that it doesn’t cost a penny. It’s in the Jewish quarter near the ghetto so go have a look

I would recommend a visit whilst in Krakow although there is only limited mention in guides. Situated just over the bridge and easy to locate. Very symbolic. Allow time to read the excellent information boards.

It is hard to imagine that this nice little square, with its dozens of symbolic chairs each bearing a photograph, was the scene of such awful, barbaric atrocities during the German occupation. There are lots of panels set up to tell the story of what happened to the Jewish ghetto, in Polish and English. Also on the square, it is well worth visiting the historic pharmacy where the local chemist worked to ease the suffering of his Jewish neighbours. Entrance there was free and it was interesting and informative, with everything explained in Polish and English.

We went past on a walkative tour. Very interesting to hear the history of the square. Would recommend visiting this site.

I'm really sorry we walked there. Sorry not to be more help. The taxis are cheap and they don't rip you off. I suggest you get a map and walk as you see so many sights along the way.
