For a beer museum that almost everyone living in Rīga knows about, few people I know seem to have visited it. Perhaps it is the location: pretty far from the city centre on the other side of Sarkandaugava (access through the Bus No.2 at Rīga Circus, or Tram No.5 at National Operahouse from the city centre). Perhaps, the other reason not many people seem to visit, is because Aldaris has a somewhat bad reputation in Latvia ever since they were bought by Carlsberg and their beer went completely downhill as a result. Either way, it was unsurprising when we finally found the entrance (after a lengthy walk around the whole site because the entrance was not signposted at all), to get inside and immediately be presented with an enormous Carlsberg advertisement. Such is globalisation, I guess.
The girl on the front desk was friendly, and they were serving the whole Aldaris range of beer in bottles at the front desk for an even cheaper price than in most supermarkets and stores. However, we figured we would do the tour before drinking anything. The beer-making facilities were completely deserted, as was the rest of the place, which was slightly off-putting, but the receptionist handed us a tablet with the self-guide tour instructions on it, and pointed us downstairs to where it begins.
There is little information available on the tour aside from what is told to you in audioguide from the iPad, which is available in several languages. Otherwise, the tour basically consisted of a small amount at the beginning about how Aldaris was founded, and otherwise the same usual recipe for how to make beer that any brewery tour everywhere gives you; except this time interspersed with advertisements for Carlsberg.
At the end, we were given three free samples each. We had all tried the simple Aldaris, Mežpils, and Saules before, so we were allowed to upgrade to more exotic beers offered from the range. They were actually really tasty; far better than the regular bottled stuff that is sold around Latvia (which is basically Carlsberg under a different label these days - hence why they invented Mežpils in the first place, though they skip over that in the tour). This was probably the best part, and we enjoyed the "periodic table of beer" on the wall. This is probably why the tour cost €9, but for what the tour actually consisted of, the price seemed very steep, to the point of being overpriced, however.

Located a faur way out of the city, to the North beside Mezaparks, but acessible via public transport (bus or tram) .
The tour cost €9 per person and is self guided in that you are given an i-pad which guides you around and explains the brewing process, ingredients etc.After that you visit the tasting room where the price includes trying 3 different beers. Beer may be purchased at a very good price.
I am pleased we visited but felt that the tour was somewaht expensive.

We commuted over half an hour one way via public transportation to visit the beer museum which had collected a lot of praise here, only to find out it was closed when we got there. We had checked the museum's website earlier that morning and it had no information about any oddities in the open times. It was supposed to be open until 15 on saturdays and we arrived at 13.55. We got turned away by a man who only spoke latvian, who just shrugged his shoulders when we asked why it was closed. We got no apology whatsoever.

Очень маленький музей. Возможно вам попадется персонал не понимающий русский, но понимающий английский (Девушка была весьма вежлива и участлива). В любом случае у них есть отличный аудиогид на планшете с русским языком. Но своих денег я думаю не стоит, на пару евро бы подешевле. В конце дают на дегустацию два разных сорта пива. Действительно это место для тех, кто вообще не понимает, как появляется пиво.

Плюсы:
- Можно посмотреть на работу настоящего цеха, в котором разливают пиво (за стеклом)
- При покупке экскурсии нам выдали планшет с аудиогидом: запускаете в каждом зале, слушаете и смотрите ролик, а потом осматриваете экспонаты. Он есть на разных языках, в т.ч. на русском, без акцента. Информации достаточно для понимания процесса, но не слишком много, чтобы вы не провели там весь день)
- Один из залов посвящен 4 компонентам: вода, дрожжи, хмель и солод. Последние можно понюхать и потрогать (!)
- Последний зал - дегустационный: вам предложат по бутылке пива в зависимости от ваших пожеланий. Можно попросить разлить одну бутылку на два бокала. Если вам хочется продегустировать больше - можно докупить еще (цены как в баре, около 2х евро). Возможно, иногда у них есть разливное пиво, но нам дали только бутылочное.
- Пока дегустируете, можно посмотреть периодическую таблицу в интерактивном варианте: про каждый стиль пива подробно расписано.
- Рядом с залом есть туалет)
- Немноголюдно
- Недорого
Минусы:
- Далеко добираться. Мы вышли на остановке трамвая Aldaris, а нужно было проехать до следующей. Пришлось идти пешком минут 15.
- Девушка, которая продавала нам билеты и наливала пиво отлично говорит по-английски, но вероятно не общается по-русски. Заранее посмотрите, какое пиво вы любите и как эти вкусы называются по-английски, чтобы не было проблем)
- Хотелось бы легких закусок, чтобы не дегустировать без еды. Но возможно мы их просто не нашли).
Как добраться: 5 трамвай, идет полчаса из центра города. На маршруте встретили контролеров: не забывайте пробить билет.

As beer lovers from Belgium, this was an interesting museum to visit. We got to know everything there is to know about beer. The museum has a refreshing atmosphere and after the tour there was a tasting that was included. We got three beers per person and it was a very nice activity!

It was a nice brewery some time ago, now only a place for workshops, beer shop and a museum. Business workshops are nice, lots of rooms, places for presentation, and food is also good. Sadly that beer is now brewed in EE and the production is stoped.

Kävimme olutmuseossa. Museoon pääsee ratikalla keskustasta (5, 9). Ratikkamatkan jälkeen jäimme Aldaris pysäkillä pois. Aldaris oluttehdas sijaitsee pysäkiltä menosuuntaan viistosti vasemmalla. Koko tehdas pitää kiertää, sisään pääsee takakautta (kyltti auttaa löytämään perille). Museossa ei ole paljoa reksiviittaa mutta mielenkiintoinen kokemus. Reissun kruunaa olutmaistelu paikan baarissa. Lippu sisään maksaa 7 euroa. Baarin seinällä on museon mielenkiintoisin kohde (prosessikaavio oluen valmistuksesta). Ostimme pari hienoa olutlasia kotiin viemisiksi.

It was as tasty and interesting as it is in the desription on their website (excellent!). What made it very special, was beer somelier Andris, who made us feeling that he is telling and showing us "a bit more" than he usually does. We also got lucky that they had a special event two months later after our visit and we got invited to visit it.
This activity recalled our memories about visited breweries in Scotland and agreed - as Aldaris is not so massively visited, they can keep that unique atmosphere and individual attitude. Well done! We will come back with guests!

Det var en nokså liten, men interessant utstilling. Man kan lese seg fram selv. Hyggelig å avslutte med ølsmaking. Ligger litt utenfor sentrum så sett av tid til trikketur fram og tilbake. Passer fint for folk som ikke er så glad i vanlige museumsbesøk.
