Could we do a leisure glacier walk after paying the $25 just to lightly experience it w parents in 60s and kids in elementary school?
LIke we just want to get a small taste of the experience, no major hiking expected.
if the answer is no for safety, what else is recommended?
We will be landing on a glacier with Talkeetna Air Taxi near Denali
& we are going to Last Exit Glacier, but heard you just look at the receding glacier and can't go too close
Plus we are doing a glacier bay tour out of Whittier

Hi...we are planning our trip to Alaska Aug 2017 and have a quick question about Matanuska Glacier. Of all the forums I have read, guided tours (with MICA, Nova or Matanuska Glacier Adventures) are recommended. Any preference? Can you still get a decent experience on a self-guided tour? Also, if we go for the guided tour it is recommended to book ahead of time (we are still trying to figure out if we can fit it in our schedule).

You have to get a "guide" to walk to the Glacier because all land around the Glacier is private property and the owners charge you $100 per person to "escort" you through their property to the Glacier. It's a rip-off. Much better to hike to the Glaciers in Portage Valley. Much closer to Anchorage too. If you do go to Matanuska, call first for reservation or you could have a long wait.
