Great camping at a wonderful state park. The smell of salt water, the sand in your sandals, the misquotes, it's gotta be Chincoteague!

Chincoteague was one of the greatest vacation disappointments of my vacation experiences. To begin, no matter where one lodges it is approximately four miles from the beach---unlike Florida where you can find a condo or hotel on the beach and if you want to catch a nap or something to eat it just takes a few minutes to get to your room. The water on the beach is so rough it is impossible to swim and the beach is overcrowded.
In addition. The day we arrived it was already late and we decided to ride out to the beach and check it out. The beach area is a federal reserve. The pay station to get on the beach was closed as the beach closes at nine o'clock, however, we were able to drive out to the beach. It was dark when we started out trip. Once past the gate it is all marsh lands with absolutely no housing in sight for the four mile trip. Shortly after entering the area I was stopped by a federal marshal who made me get out of the car and subjected me to an entire, humiliating sobriety test which I passed. He then informed me he wasn't going to arrest me but he decided to give me a speeding ticket. His reason was I was over the 25 mile an hour speed limit which he never provided proof or informed me how fast I was traveling. I am a 75 year old veteran and not an irresponsible or reckless driver. The ticket cost me $180---welcome to Chincoteague, Island. It was after this I discover the speed limit on the entire island is 25 miles an hour. I feel I was targeted because I had an out of state (Indiana) license plate and they know it would be too expensive to come back to court and protest the ticket.
That was my first and last trip to Chincoteague Island, Maryland. Thgere are some wild ponies on the island but too few and too far to view. Chincoteague Island is not worth the trip or time. There are much better places to vacation in this great country. Don't waste your time or money. By the way. There isn't even a grocery store on the Island. the closest on is about an hour away.

We just happened to go to Chincoteague Island for a quick day trip. I read the Misty of Chincoteague and subsequent books by Marguerite Henry as a child and loved them. It was fun to see the bronze statue of Misty which is across the street from the Misty Theater. Lots of shops sell t-shirts and books with the famous pony and the annual pony roundup.
It's a cute little town with a few cute shops, but not much more than that. The Main street is 3 blocks long and not much is on the side streets. We were just passing through so we didn't look to see if there were other activities, but there didn't seem to be much else.
But it was one of my favorite parts of my Virginia trip.
