Black Elk Peak is the tallest mountain east of the Rocky Mountains so it is a bit of a challenge to climb. I climbed from Sylvan Lake. The trail is well marked and easy to follow. It does climb quite a bit with a considerable drop in the middle before climbing again to the summit ridge.
I remember years ago there was a metal ladder strapped to a large vertical obstacle and was surprised that was replaced with a new stair system. The summit views are still awesome.

Beautiful Views at the top! Definitely were tired by the end of it. We started before the sun rose and found it was hot on the way back in the mid afternoon sun. Not too crowded and lots of space from others on your way to the top!

The trail took us 5 hours total because it took us around 2 hours to summit and go back down and then we stayed on the summit for 1 hour. The views and scenery were beautiful and although there was not much wildlife we saw a few interesting birds. We went up Trail #9 and went down #4 and would recommend that order. Trail #4 is less rocky than trail #9 and has better views/scenery so its a good trail to end on. While descending on Trail #4 we got a good view of the cathedral spires without detouring. Watch out for horse poop on trail #9. Also, the first parking lot that you see when coming down on trail #4 is not the starting one near Sylven Lake so don't be fooled :)
A few more tips. A hiking stick is helpful, especially when going down. Make sure to bring lots of water. Bring a light jacket just in case because it becomes a bit cold on the summit. Dogs are able to do this trial, although they do not like the stairs at the summit. Make sure to bring lots of water for them.We saw young elementary kids on the trail so most little kids could probably complete the trial too.

Trailered in my horse to this area. Nice place to park and trails well marked. Took trail #9 to top and rode trail #5 to #2 down. Persons on trail were very nice and accomodating to me on horseback. As trails are very rocky, I'd suggest shoes with DrillTech. Round trip ride from parking lot to peak to parking lot took 6 hours.

The best hike, but it is challenging. My 12 and 9 year olds did it, but my partner has asthma and could not take on the hike to 7,500 elevation. It is hard. Lots of climbing and stairs - be prepared. We took trail 9 and made it to the top in less than 2 hours. Highly recommend, but be prepared this is not a casual walking hike. It is safe, but you will get a workout. The views are amazing!

A must do! For the view and for the experience!
The trail is very nice and fun. You see many different views of the black hills. And at the top you can also see Mount Rushmore. We totally enjoyed our walk and still talk about it today!

This may be my favorite hike of the year for me visiting 17 National Parks and 10 National Monuments. As an 8 mile loop with around 1,700 feet of elevation, combined with Cathedral Spires, it was the perfect length, forest, overlooks, rock features and views. It was simply an incredible hike. The best part of it is reaching the highest point in South Dakota and seeing the view of the Black Hills which includes views of the Cathedral Spires and the back of Mt. Rushmore. It is all the more satisfying after seeing the mountain loom above Rapid City as we drove back from Badlands on I-90. To realize we were on top of that peak that dominates the Black Hills is awesome.
The western fires obscured some of the views with smoke. However, it was still amazing to reach the top and another state high point as we reached both North and South Dakota on this trip. We parked at Lake Sylvan and hiked the western trail #9 before returning on the eastern trail #4 where we visited Cathedral Spires. We did the entire trip including stops at the top and at the spires in just over 4 hours, beginning at 8:00 and finishing just after noon.
This was a highlight hike and attractions. It probably gets overlooked by so many other more famous things to do. However, for me this is a Black Hills MUST DO. Be sure to plan time for this hike and attraction, you will be rewarded.

We extended the hike by starting at Sylvan Lake, hiking trail 4 to Little Devils Tower which we had to ourselves on a Saturday morning. Great trails, saw mule deer and chipmunks, enjoyed the rock scrambling at the top.
From there we went a little ways on trail 4 and took the Cathedral spires trail about half a mile out and back. Very pretty. We continued on the the top of Elk Peak and were among 20-30 other people scattered around the top rocky areas. After spending time enjoying the views, we went down trail 9 and met dozens of people coming up in the hot sun. With our detours and stops, we spent about 5 1/2 hours on the trails. Really enjoyed our route and would do it again. Best to start early!!

My husband and girls (6 and 9) hiked this one morning while I did some work back at our campsite and they loved it. I was worried that it'd been too far for them but he said they loved it and never once said they were bored or tired. They stopped for a few minutes here and there for water and snacks but they completed the hike in about 3 hours. I believe they took the most common trails I see others listing here, from and back to Sylvan Lake. Mainly wanted to review so others would know it's do-able with a 6 year old!

One of the highlights of our family trip. We did the hike on trail #9 from Sylvan Lake up to Black Elk Peak. It was an awesome hike up and getting to the top was incredible. It is so awesome. We took trail #4 on the way back to Sylvan Lake and that trail is awesome also. We had three kids along, ages 8, 11, and 16. They all made the hike easily. It took us about 4-5 hours. We stopped a lot for the views and water breaks. Would highly recommend this!

We will be visiting the area in early October and I'm unfamiliar with the climate that time. Will it still be hikable at that time?

We want to do both trails 4 & 9 to go up/down Harney's Peak since we want to do the Little Devils trail spur. Is it better to go up 4 and then down 9 or vice versa? We will be starting at Sylvan Lake and most likely won't start until after we check into our Sylvan Lake cabin at 2pm, June 2, 2017.

After it has snowed 4 to 8 inches in the area, when do you think is the soonest one could hike this trail?

Gee. I'd have no way of knowing. It depends on sun, temps. We've started up before when it was fine at trailhead and turned around when we hit ice after about a mile. That was in early May. You could try, see what happens. I wouldn't take any risks. I don't think you'd have certain success till mid-May now. Good luck!
How long will it take to walk to the top of Harney Peak?

Previous answer would be a good average. If you are really fit can climb to fire tower in 1.5 hrs and back in 1 hr if taking the southern route from Sylvan Lake.
Do you think Harney would be achievable for an almost 6 year old?

Thanks for answering! She made it successfully on her own two feet. It was a long hard day, but achievable.

how close is it to mt rushmore and other popular attractions? Is there an entry fee?

มอนเตวิเดโอ, มินนิโซตา28 ผลงาน
Sylvan Lake (trail head) is about 25 minutes from Mt. Rushmore and 20 minutes from Crazy Horse. You have to pay the State Park fee to enter Sylvan Lake or to drive through the needles. That was $20 for 7 days.
