This event is top no0tch every year. We expect no less from the Library of Congress. However, success breeds popularity and even though it is in the convention center it is too crowded to be able to see the speakers you want and move around the building. It is a 5 star event but when you get blocked from doing what you would like to do, well, then it is less than 5 star. There should be overflow rooms for people to see the most popular speakers. This year the RBG talk was very full and there were likely many hundreds of people shut out from this very popular speaker. if there was a ball room where we could see a screen, it wouldn't be as nice as live but better than missing it. The volunteer staff was wonderful and extremely helpful. I will go back next year and hope for the best.

The Library of Congress stages a National Book Festival on the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend every year. It's held at the massive DC Convention Center, and evidently draws the Center's biggest crowds -- many thousands of people -- of the year.
It's flat outstanding. From the Main Stage, which features major draws -- this year, names such as Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Chef and Humanitarian Jose Andres, NY Times Columnist David Brooks, Historian David McCulloch and many more, through a variety of satellite stages with authors on science, fiction, children's literature and more, there's much to see and hear for every taste. Books, of course, are on sale, and many of the authors also do signings.
This is the kind of event anyone would want the government to present. And since private donors provide funding for it, admission is free -- which is the cherry on this chocolate cake.
So, kudos to the Library, and if you're going to be in the DC vicinity next Labor Day weekend, mark your calendars. It's something not to be missed.

In my personal book, the Library of Congress National Book Festival is not to be missed. So many authors, wonderful panels and presentations, tons of books, and many people who love the written word. Drop in for the panels and talks, the book shopping, the book signing, or all three. The lovey woman behind me in line for a book signing, commented that this day, each year, gives her hope for mankind. I loved that.

Not to be missed. Big name authors speak all day long. All free. Blissfully air conditioned. Pro tip: pick one venue inside to avoid long lines for every hour’s guest. Bonus: to hear David Rubinstein interview someone without a notecard.

Books for all ages and price ranges. Every year they feature a wide range of quality speakers from various genres (I've seen Stephen King & Kareem Abdul Jabbar + Shonda Rhimes and Salman Rushdie were there that same year) throughout the day-long itinerary so you can at least catch a bit of a couple of your faves.
