The staff were gruff and rude, the museum was over-heated and the artwork, if you can call it that, was less then stellar. As a US taxpayer, I am appalled that my tax dollars are supporting such an unfriendly and lack-luster place.

The focus is on artisans , arts, and crafts. Good collection and curation.
Off the Mall near the old Executive Office Building - a bit of a hidden gem. Free.
A small museum - 2 floors.
Found it by accident while strolling around -- we will go back.

This a gem of a museum devoted to American craft. It is in a beautiful building very close to the White House. There are two stories connected by a grand,tall staircase (there are elevators if you prefer.) The exhibits are always beautiful and often thoughtful. Since some people have complained about the guards, I like to say they were all pleasant and professional. I'd say it takes about an hour to visit (not including time in the excellent museum store).

The first purpose-built museum building in the US. Two floors of exhibits. Security staff is lovely.
Note carpet up the front stairs.
Imaginative exhibits of wood, ceramic, glass, woven material, etc.
I love it.
Free.
You need only an hour.
Near The White House and Washington Monument.
Washington is one of the top museum cities in the US and the best if one counts price.

We visited on our last day in DC, the gallery was okay. Some pretty ridiculous ‘art’, but the female security staff member was so rude!! She took a dislike to my partner and pretty much aggressively shouted regarding a bag being in front rather than the side or behind, whilst other people were doing the exact same thing no problem. We’re all adults and know where our bags are and can keep them out the way. I wouldn’t visit again and certainly wouldn’t recommend due the staff being so rude

While the gallery was nice and had a pleasant variety of pieces, our overall visit was soured by the security upfront. The female security guard was incredibly rude and hostile towards us immediately when checking our bags. She was also rude towards the people behind us. What a terrible experience! Who hires such a hostile, aggressive person?

This is a small art museum specializing not in fine art but in craft. It contained a high percentage of very interesting items and as part of the the Smithsonian, it is free. Well worth a visit here.

We stopped in while walking by and really didn’t know what we were going to see. The building and architecture are magnificent and the art is certainly unique. The different mediums the artists work with are amazing. You can stay as long as you would like or walk through in 30 minutes. They also have a nice gift shop.

The behavior of a guard at the entrance bordered on harassment. The carpet on the grand staircase touted in the promotional video was filthy with dark streaks. The best exhibits by far were in the gift shop. Hard to believe I was in a legendary Smithsonian. Felt more like a poorly managed tourist trap.

I totally agree with lynn p in regards to her disappointment due to lack of crowd control at the "Murder Is Her Hobby" exhibit during busy times. I drove from Albany to see this exhibit. Fortunately, I arrived fairly early and was able to see most of the first room of the exhibit. But then the crowds became so unbearable that I just took photos of the crime stories so I could use those and the virtual reality views on the Renwick's site to see the rest. My suggestions would be for the exhibit to have a path guests should follow so everyone will stay in a line and not cut in in front of people who have been waiting longer to see each nutshell. I also think their should either be signs or docents present that urge guests to keep their viewing time politely short. I waited 15 minutes to try to see an exhibit that the group surrounding it decided to dominate while they tried to solve the crime. I just gave up after that... The museum could and SHOULD control that. This is a fabulous exhibit and it's very sad not to be able to see it all due to visitors who do not respect others sharing the space.

Yes, it was crowded but everybody took their turn & were respectful of those waiting. I don't think the intent of the exhibition is to actually solve the scenes so that may cause a problem if visitors seek to dominate the nutshells.

Is it busier on Saturday or Sunday at the Museum? The Nutshell Exhibit is about to close so I was wondering which days would be less busy...?

I think both days will be relatively busy. Your best bet I think will be to go early in the day when they open. And don't be afraid to jump around from piece to piece. There's no order really so if one of the 'scenes' is crowded. Jump ahead and then go back.
It was a wonderful exhibit. Be sure to bring a phone to light the exhibits and if you need them, eyeglasses.
There's also very good docent led tours of the permanent collection on the 2nd floor. Check the Renwick's website for the times on the day you choose.

No there are not wheelchairs available. There is an elevator. The only thing I have a hesitation about is the entrance. I would say to contact the museum for an accessible entrance.

I don't recall seeing any wheelchairs, although that doesn't mean they aren't available. I know there is a dedicated handicap entrance.
