Well, I have to agree somewhat with the other reviewer. The George Washington Heritage Trail doesn't have a lot of interesting sites along the way. It's one of those routes you take if you are inquisitive and have time. It's also one of those routes you take if you have interest in geography or geology.

I would draw your attention, however, to the Exxon station, located 12696 George Washington Hwy, Rowlesburg WV 26425. This is a very novel stop. One reviewer on another site wrote: "You have to experience this place words don't do it's weirdness justice..." Well I wouldn't say "weirdness", I would say it's somewhat of a step back in time. It's an interesting country store. And I would note, every other weekend locals come in on Saturday night and play country and gospel music.

My wife and I enjoyed the stop. It's different. It's part of America.

Not very scenic for the amount of driving
George Washington is my favorite president, so I was so excited to see in the West Virginia tourism guide the opportunity to drive the Washington Heritage Trail, consisting of a loop of towns George Washington frequented and represented at one point in the Virginia House of Burgesses. We spent the better part of the day driving the loop. We are big scenery buffs; and found there just was not enough scenery to make this long drive worth it. Many of the towns in the loop have gotten way too commercialized; most don't have an old, historic flavor (exceptions are Shepherdstown and Harpers Ferry, which are very historic and charming.) One town (Bunker Hill) even had three “gentlemen's clubs.” There are supposed to be rivers in this scenic loop, but we rarely saw them. We did enjoy the drive from Berkeley Heights to Paw Paw, and there's a nice scenic overlook along the way. Otherwise, we would not do this trail again.
