This was a great hike for the family, including 7 and 10 year olds who get tired after much uphill. The trail is fairly steep, but short enough to make it easy for them to keep motivated. The lake is pretty.
My 7yo and I noticed a trail up the side of the hill to the right of the lake, and went on up (another 10 minutes of hiking). This was not an official trail and we had to bushwhack a little, but it was worth it. The views from the top were better than the lake itself. Definitely a tougher up and down to get there though.

Good for almost any fitness level - and beautiful. One in our party had a bad back, but this was easily doable for him, with walking sticks. The rest of us enjoyed the hike and the beauty

Well marked and easy to follow. Mostly steep up hill. In early July needed to traverse some deep snow to get to lake (which was most frozen). But very cool views and lots of running water along hike. Would recommend for a nice diversion on the way to independence pass.

We were all 70 y/o and flatlanders but managed to hike without much difficulty to the top. Two of used walking sticks which really helped. Alpine lake at the top is beautiful.

really enjoyed this - you go straight up from Independence Pass and it is fairly steep and rocky - but the lake at the top is stunning. Bring good shoes and an extra jacket.

Take a break from the Aspen crowds and hike the short climb up to Linkins Lake. The trailhead is located about 1.8 miles toward Aspen from the Independence Pass summit. The climb is fairly steep - about 500 ft in elevation gain over 1+ mile, but is accessible to hikers of all ages. Bring a picnic lunch and settle in next to the shoreline to enjoy the alpine views, wildflowers and the utter stillness surrounding this beautiful place. One of our favorite hikes!

We had heard this may be a nice alternative to Maroon Bells, which is touristy and typically costs money to take a bus over to it. We took our kids, ages 7 and 9 and it was easily one of the highlights of our trip. It had some steep parts, but with it being .6 miles each way, it is very manageable and the view at the top is breathtaking. We hung out at the lake for probably 45 minutes and only came across a few others.

This is a beautiful hike through vast wide open lands along the Independence Pass. The grade is not steep at all; it is sometimes hard to find the trail, as even in June there is snow on the ground and the ground is spongy and wet. You truly feel the vastness of the universe as there are virtually no trees and just miles an miles open fields, partially covered in snow, surrounded by snow capped mountains. Very majestic!

We happened upon this hike driving along Independence Pass towards Aspen. It's not far from the Continental Divide overlook. It's easy to pull off and park at the trail head by Roaring Fork River. It is a beautiful short hike with fantastic views gaining a little over 500 ft in about 0.8 mi. It took us about an hour and a half at a modest pace. We hiked in mid June and the lake was still snow covered. Apparently the trail extends a little above the lake to an abandoned mine and cabin but we didn't go above the lake due to snow. The first half or more of the trail is fairly easy. Near the lake, the trail is a bit more steep and rocky. We wore hiking boots, but didn't have hiking sticks. We tolerated this short hike quite well considering this was our first hike at high elevation after having been in CO for only 2 or 3 days.
As you continue on Hwy 82 to Aspen, be sure to pull off on the left just past the Grottos Trail/Campground to visit Devil's Punchbowl. It was spectacular with gushing water from the snow melt. Apparently it is a swimming hole when the water calms later in the summer.

The hike is fairly steep but it is short ( less than a mile ) and the view is one of our favorites. We take a lunch and sit on top of the world and feel sorry for all the people who have never experienced the beauty that can be found on the high tundra. Because it is short even young kids can make the hike without much complaining. From the lake you can always go up higher both to the north and to the south if you want more of a challenge.
